I‘m tagging my favorite book this month. It‘s one of the two chunksters (500 & 600+ pages) I read this month. I read 3 books by Roxane Gay for #authoramonth, 4 for #Nepal #foodandlit, and 1 for #whattheDickens.

Another chunkster from the #1001books list. ✅. Whenever I read Dickens, it seems my opinion of whoever else I‘m reading at the same time (I never have just ONE book going 😱) is immediately lowered. Also, my command of the English language is dismal. 😕

Swinging from the deplorable to the humorous to humble and kind, this book has it all. Nicholas, a sweet soul with a temper, makes enemies of his wealthy uncle and a despicable teacher in his first job as his assistant. Saving a mistreated worker in the teacher‘s household, Smike, they join an acting troupe—until they must rush back to London to save Nicholas‘s sister from the machinations of that uncle. There he ⬇️
The movie was uneven. Stellar cast but the acting was hit or miss. Some sets were exactly as we‘d pictured from the book like the Dotheboy school, and some sets like flimsy pasteboard. Sometimes the dialog was true to the story to the word and sometimes completely made up. How could it be otherwise to condense a 34-hour book into a 2-hour movie? I‘m very glad I watched it but, as expected, the book was countless times better. #whattheDickens
Just finished. I LOVED this book—it‘s right up there with A Christmas Carol. Even though we have through March to read it for #whattheDickens I hurried it up so I can watch the movie before it goes off Prime. What a satisfying read! Review to come. @Cuilin
Reminiscent of “Janet! Donkeys!” from David Copperfield, here we have the Nickleby‘s neighbor hissing like a cat! Love it!
#whattheDickens @Cuilin
Dickens eviscerates those who write plays from the unfinished works of real authors. I‘m thinking this was pretty close to Dickens‘ heart.
#whattheDickens @Cuilin
Dickens reveals his love of Shakespeare (although he‘s spoken highly of him earlier in this book)…but for “playwrights” who steal authors‘ stories he is damning…next quote to come.
#whattheDickens @Cuilin
"It is only my foolish fancy, mamma, said Kate, forcing a smile.
“Well, then, my love, I wish you would keep your foolish fancy to yourself, and not wake up *my* foolish fancy to keep it company,” retorted Mrs Nickleby.

Has anyone ever laughed so hard?
Only Dickens… I‘m loving this book so much. All my others have gone by the wayside.
#whatthedickens @Cuilin
Absolutely loving this book so I checked to see if there were a movie. Being able to watch it “free” on Prime expires in 8 days!! Thought I‘d give everyone a heads up. That means I have about 8 days to finish 15 hours if I want to finish the book before watching the movie, which of course I do. So we will see if I can manage it. The trailer for the movie looks so good and it‘s well cast. #whatthedickens @Cuilin
Anyone else like or have a mother like Kate‘s mom, making her be ready for her appointment 1-1/2 hours early? 🤣🤣
Wink wink Mom @Doll8455 😘
@Cuilin #whatthedickens
Mr Gregsbury the politician doesn‘t think authors are entitled to be paid for their works! Ha! Dickens jesting by pointing a finger at himself!

#WhatTheDickens
Spite, the word even sounds malicious.
Nothing like holding our elected officials‘ feet to the fire?
I can just picture Dickens chortling to himself as he wrote about the electorate bringing grievances to this member of parliament
I won‘t post it, but the last question to “sir” is the funniest!
#whatthedickens @Cuilin
Those darned campaign promises!! Member of Parliament Gregsbury is not keeping his promises! 🤣
#whatthedickens @Cuilin
A job posting!! 🤣🤣🤣
#whatthedickens @Cuilin
Even while describing the worst of situations, Dickens‘ humor still shines through
#whattheDickens @Cuilin
No one I‘ve ever read (or listened to) writes characters as well as Dickens! #whattheDickens @Cuilin
I‘ll be starting this audiobook tomorrow for #whattheDickens @Cuilin

Nicholas Nickleby has 65 chapters. Read at your own pace and discussion will be at the end of March.
One of Dickens‘ earlier novels, NN gives me Pickwick vibes, especially with some of the over-the-top humor, and the pathos of The Old Curiosity Shop. Nicholas is a young man‘s hero - brash and hot headed and protective of his and his sister‘s honor. But also likable. And he sticks to his version of honorable behavior even when it goes against his feelings for Madeline. A typical Dickensian ending wraps it all up with a bow for an enjoyable read.
21 Mar- 2 Apr 23 (audiobook)
I love Dickens. His writing just brings me joy, despite the somewhat miserable circumstances he depicts. I love his language, his preposterous villains, and angelic heroines. And I love the way his novels meander but eventually come back to a somewhat comfortable (and usually predictable) conclusion. This was not my favourite Dickens - probably Great Expectations - but still good and I enjoyed the narrator very much.

Day 303.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
Trying to find time to read between my classes and running a house; and of course I picked a classic, a thick book of course! 🤷🏻♀️
#Audiocrocheting ❤ Suddenly I realized that Christmas is approaching, som it's time to continue my snowflake blanket 😅 Love the included concept on Audible where I can listen to Nicholas Nickleby for free ❤👍👏
I've been having episodes where my body has seizure-like tremors. Tonight, my speech is extremely messed up to where I cannot talk without a severe stutter, and my body is extremely tired and weak. So, to keep up my spirits, I'm going to read a Dickens novel I haven't read before!

Posting 1 unread (or book put into hibernation) per day for 31 days. No reason or explanation. Creating a priority TBR.
@StaceyKondla
This was a long book and it took me a long time to get through. I enjoyed the rambling narrative. It was kind of like the Pickwick Papers in that it would go off on long tangents.
Day 18 of #GratefulReads is #BeenOnYourTBRTooLong and now is when I reveal my literary dark secret! I‘ve been reading Nicholas Nickelby for YEARS! It started okay but I got bogged down in parts and then I just stalled on it. Dickens is not my idea of fun times. 🤦🏻♀️

1. Nicholas Nickleby and a book called The Birds Our Teachers by John Stott. The second is a Christian book about how we can learn about God through birds. The author calls it an “orni-theology” 😊
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - no, I still haven‘t read all the HP books!
3. I have some doorstoppers I want to finish by year end. In October I‘ll either read Moby Dick or Schindler‘s Ark.
From the Charles Dickens Museum. A letter in which Dickens states that the "finished Nickleby at last". ?
Last stop on our London weekend: one of the houses Charles Dickens lived and wrote in.
I absolutely abhor Ralph Nickleby! He's a selfish bastard!
I'm in a Dickens mood! My beautiful copy of Nicholas Nickleby I bought from the library today! 😍
#Maylovesclassics. #illustratededition The outside cover is plain, but it is a joy to find an illustrated classic.
