Somewhere Only We Know
Somewhere Only We Know | Maurene Goo
Sparks fly between a K pop starlet and a tabloid reporter in this heartwarming rom-com from Maurene Goo. 10:00 p.m.: Lucky is the biggest K-pop star on the scene, and shes just performed her hit song Heartbeat in Hong Kong to thousands of adoring fans. Shes about to debut on The Tonight Show in America, hopefully a breakout performance for her career. But right now? Shes in her fancy hotel, trying to fall asleep but dying for a hamburger. 11:00 p.m.: Jack is sneaking into a fancy hotel, on assignment for his tabloid job that he keeps secret from his parents. On his way out of the hotel, he runs into a girl wearing slippers, a girl who is single-mindedly determined to find a hamburger. She looks kind of familiar. Shes very cute. Hes maybe curious. 12:00 a.m.: Nothing will ever be the same. With her trademark humor and voice, Maurene Goo delivers a sparkling story of taking a chance on loveand finding yourself along the way.

That was one cute, wonderful book! I don‘t know where this Maurene Goo reading rush came from, but I don‘t regret a second of it.

This is a super cute romantic comedy appropriate for all ages. I loved the dual points of view and found both Jack and Lucky to be charming and hilarious. The chemistry between them was very believable. It‘s a fun read!

I adored this book! Lucky, the biggest K-Pop star on the planet, sneaks out of her hotel room and happens to meet Jack, a tabloid photographer, though that fact is unbeknownst to Lucky. She decides to take a day off from her demanding schedule, and incognito, she and Jack wander through Hong Kong. You can guess what happens. This is a K-Pop version of Roman Holiday, and I was totally here for it!

#bookspinbingo - my #doublespin for this month!

This was a sweet YA romance which gave me an innocent ‘Nick & Norah‘s Infinite Playlist,‘ but K-Pop edition, vibe. It was fluffy and somewhat predictable, but I liked the characters and their development. There‘s a passion alongside the ease of this novel that just makes you want to enjoy the same things. I found myself cooking bao to eat alongside Lucky and picked up my guitar (for the first time in years!) after finishing the book.

Classic romance where the good girl falls for the bad guy. But the character arcs for both characters are great, and centered around their career development individually 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I‘ve loved all the Maurene Goo novels I‘ve read so far and this one was also enjoyable. It wasn‘t my favorite because it‘s very Roman Holiday in Hong Kong, so I dreaded the inevitable moment when one of the characters feels betrayed. But she does great characters with great attention to the setting so it was still fun.

I biked 20 miles this morning instead of my usual 10 or 15 so I wouldn‘t have to put SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW down until I‘d finished it. What an awesome book! On the surface, it‘s pure fun; deeper down, it‘s about two artists who rediscover their focus as they spend a single, intense day together. Lucky‘s a singer who‘s lost the joy. Jack‘s a photographer who‘s embraced morally dubious methods. I loved and rooted for them both.

Maurene Goo‘s modern K-pop riff on Roman Holiday charmingly captures the heart and spirit of its source. Which sometimes means trying to find modern versions of certain tropes that are more palatable than the original. Goo manages this update fairly well, but it‘s unavoidably sketchy. Still, all in all, it‘s a fun, sweet, candy-colored love letter to romantic comedies, Hong Kong, and following your dreams. 💖 ⁣

YA Romance. Modern retelling of Roman Holiday, featuring a K-Pop star that reminds me of Britney Spears's song Lucky. Coincidentally, the name of the heroine.

Also, this was the first book from this author that I was excited to read from beginning to end. I bailed on her second book (the food truck one), and it took forever for me to get through her first (fake boyfriend trope, based on K-Drama)

A fun #YA K-pop star/ordinary guy romance that is self-aware about rom-coms, references Wong Kar Wai, makes Hong Kong sound deeply romantic, and has serious self-knowledge moments amid the awkward sad and bad betrayal times (which the reader knows to be coming). 4⭐️ #romantsy

suzisteffen Also this made me want to get to know Wong Kar Wai movies! I feel so ignorant! 6y
batsy I'm going to have to read this! I've loved the few Wong Kar Wai movies I've seen and In the Mood for Love is just beautiful 🥰 6y
suzisteffen @batsy That movie has definitely shot to the top of my list! 6y
sarahs.thoughts.on.books It made me want to watch them again. Maybe I'll have a greater appreciation for them as an adult. Rather than in my 20s, and everyone raved about them, and I thought they were meh 5y

“You are so lucky!” I rhapsodized as Jack purchased the tickets.”This is the OG. Everything I know about Hong Kong? This movie” — I jabbed the poster for emphasis — “God, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung are, like, these untouchable, beautiful beings.”
“They look exactly the same today as they did in this movie,” Jack mused.
“Asian don‘t raisin,” I said.
He threw back his head and laughed for so long that I got embarrassed.

New #YA K-pop romance on my Kobo (uh, new to me, anyway). Set in Hong Kong. So far,it reminds me of Roman Holiday, which I am pretty sure is deliberate. Not the same age difference though.

Sometimes I just need a contemporary break. It feels good to step away from my "normal" reads (fantasy, mystery, sci-fi) and pick up something lighter. Of course no I am going to have that song stuck in my head though.

K Pop sensation Lucky is poised to make her big American debut, but she‘s beginning to chafe at her restrictive lifestyle. Then she meets Jack, a tabloid photojournalist, and across the course of just one day they fall in love with Hong Kong, and maybe each other? This was a sweet YA romance about finding and pursuing your passions in life.

I really enjoyed this book. Lucky is a K-Pop star who just finished her Asia tour. She is getting ready to come to America for hopefully her big break. But right now she really wants a hamburger but she knows no one will let her have one. So she decides to sneak out of the hotel. She meets Jack who is taking pictures of famous people for extra money. They have no idea that the next 24 hours will change bother of their lives!
