pickA 9 year old named Violet came into the bookstore to celebrate her birthday and, when she saw my dragon t-shirt, recommended me this middle grades graphic novel about a young Chinese-American girl who‘s gifted a dragon egg! While I didn‘t love the representation of scientists or the emphasis on blood, I was blown away by the action, plot twists, stunning art, and lovable characters—Nate the dragon enthusiastically included!
pickI couldn‘t put this one down once I‘d started. The themes in it and of course the story are both relevant and kept me hooked!
pickI love Maggie O‘Farrell‘s writing and this one is the most unusual one I‘ve read. Fascinating and unusual plot. Worth a read for sure.

Very fitting summation of the novel. Both Kitty and her husband Walter are difficult characters to like and empathize with, but are most definitely human in being their own worst enemies.
The reference to Chinese staff as “boy(s)” was grating each time I heard it, but is apropos to the era.
