I really enjoyed learning more about Harris and her early days in politics. It also helped me understand more of what was going on in the early 2000‘s, much of the aftermath we are still feeling.
It helped humanize her both inside and outside the political sphere and makes me even sadder about how the election went.
💙
I know I‘m not here as often as I once was but I came here today to give a virtual hug to those in this community who I am grieving with today.
And if you voted for Trump? I don‘t want your book recommendations, or your well wishes, or your stupid bookish games and fake declarations of love for all. You don‘t care about us. And you don‘t care about this country or those in other countries.
May paper cuts abound with every page turn.
Audio. This sounded just like the other Harris book about her I read years ago to get to know her. Just a bit more fleshed out and more hope in what she wants to go towards. With all the stuff she says she accomplished, though, it would‘ve been nice to have a going back to see how it is actually affected those people. Then again this is a memoir so it is hard for me to review those.
Helpful insight into her experiences and priorities on many issues. I generally don‘t care for memoirs but the elements of memoir enhance and personalize this book‘s content.
Kamal Harris is a smart woman who writes about her biggest influences and how they affect her. She also protests unfair laws, discrimination, cheap salaries and violence, overpriced drugs and stingy health insurance, among other things. She is the voice for those that cannot defend or prosecute their abusers and shares some of their stories. She explains the harms of racism and sexism. This book may be triggering and is for mature readers only.
On jail reform “The disparity is so high that at any given time, roughly nine out of ten people who are detained can‘t afford to pay to get out.” Kamala Harris says that since the bail is not proportional to people‘s salary it “By its very design, the cash bail system favors the wealthy and penalizes the poor.” And “Whether or not someone can get bailed out of jail shouldn‘t be based on how much money he has in the bank. Or the color of his skin.”
I purchased this book today for my kindle app. I look forward to reading it.
Incredible. I really enjoyed the mix of memoir and policy discussions. Lots of inspiration mixed in. 5⭐️
“I‘ve learned, through history and experience, that not all progress is gradual or linear. Sometimes it simply goes from one plateau to another. Sometimes we fall back tragically. Sometimes we leap forward…I believe that our job is to provide the force propulsion that will get us to a higher plane.”

I‘m currently reading this, and I feel so confident about it I‘m ready to leave a review. My respect for this woman has increased so much as a result of reading this. She worked for everything she has, and she cares about her country. I especially enjoyed reading about her parents and her childhood in California. This was published before she became vice president, so I‘m sure another memoir will be coming in the future. Highly recommended.
I REALLY enjoyed learning about Kamala Harris. She openly shared about her family background and upbringing. Her career in the DA‘s office was admirable as she worked hard to improve the criminal justice system. Interesting stories about the opportunities she had to get involved in politics. Harris is an amazing, professional woman I look up to. It‘s evident she really cares about people and has this country‘s best interest at heart.
On one hand, this is a pretty standard “I‘m running for President” memoir—a life history until the present mixed in with passions and beliefs. On the other hand, it gave me an opportunity to get to know a little bit about my 🎉MADAM VICE PRESIDENT💪🏼🎉, who is a complete and total badass with firm beliefs, a meteoric rise, and all the capability in the world. I really enjoyed this.
Loved listening to Kamala Harris narrate her own memoir through the audiobook version.
It reaffirmed why I voted for her to be our Vice President.
She truly is FOR the people and wants justice for all of us. I love that she said she still believes, after everything, that people are good.
There were pieces of this I knew but there were plenty of stories that were new to me as well.
I like to think people are good, too.
I loved getting to learn more about Vice President Kamala Harris, where she comes from, and what she stands for. So proud to have voted for her to become Vice President. She is the kind of lady I am happy to have moving the country forward. She is positive, tough, just, and empathetic. Some parts got a little more detailed than I was expecting in policy and anecdotes but overall very well written. Also really loved getting to hear her narrate!
That‘s a good way to explain how I feel about cooking too I think!
SO PROUD of this woman for making history! Kamala has broken barriers and holds the highest national position any woman ever has in the US. I‘m so glad to have a woman as the US Vice President, and I can‘t wait to see what she achieves alongside Joe Biden 🇺🇸
I listened to Kamala‘s life story, narrated by her, which was definitely the way to go! It was great to learn more about her background.
I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.
Day 90.

Not going to lie, I have a HUGE crush on our Vice President!! This was extremely well written and organized. It just made me love her even more!
I read this book to get more familiar with our Vice President. I listened to this and did not like that it was not narrated by Madame Harris. All in All a great read and I really liked Harris's passion for what she believes in.
LOVED this book! I have a better understanding of Kamala Harris, what she stands for, and how she thinks/works to address needs of her constituents. It‘s an important read for us all, but I believe that those who oppose her and/or her politics won‘t give it the open-mindedness needed to see her as a woman who has worked and struggled in a male-dominated field to achieve so much good in the world.
“History has shown that one person‘s willingness to stand up for what is right can be the spark that ignites far-reaching change.” - Vice President Kamala Harris
Wow. What an incredible woman Kamala Harris is. Reading this book allowed me to gain more insight on who Kamala is as a person, as well as some of the things that she‘s been able to achieve within her lifetime. This book also opened my eyes to so many political & social issues in the US.
There‘s been a lot of things happening lately in my country that do not make me proud. I am so proud watching this moment. The swearing in of an intelligent, dynamic, capable, competent woman to one of the 2 highest offices in the country. There may be some tears here. It‘s about damn time!
You go, Kamala! 🎉🥳🥂🍾🇺🇸
Put your sneakers on, ladies. There‘s glass everywhere. #thefirstbutnotthelast #kamalaharris #madamvicepresident
Happy Inauguration Day! I feel like the whole world is celebrating this one. ✊🏼
Good morning! Who‘s ready for this day? 🙌🏻
Reviewing political memoirs always feels a bit silly to me. You already know whether you like reading this kind of book, and whether or not you‘re interested in reading about Kamala Harris. This is a solid memoir, that mixes personal and career narratives with commentary on some of the ‘big issues‘ in American politics. I found it very interesting.
I was reluctant to read this book because I want to remain critical of politicians and not buy into politician fandom (which I think is v problematic!!). However, I did enjoy this. Although incredibly cheesy at times, I thought this book was well organized - a personal history followed by political beliefs influenced by said personal history.
This was such an eye opener to who Kamala Harris is. It‘s amazing to think about what‘s occurred since the book was published -a week before saying she would run for president
We all know where she is now
This was a good half-autobiography from an immigrant child to general attorney. Not much direct quotes and going places, but what she believes and how she fought the courts for it. Obviously it‘s by her hand, so you have to consider that
When people hear that a mother has ‘lost a child to cancer or a car accident or war, the natural response is collective sympathy and concern. But when a woman loses her son to violence in the streets, the response from the public is often different, almost a collective shrug, as though it‘s an expected eventuality. Not the horrific tragedy of losing a child, but rather just another statistic.
Happy thanksgiving! I‘m preparing for a social reckoning. I want to know more about my Madam Vice President Elect before she gets in office in Jan. Let alone the point that my family doesn‘t seem to like her
I am so intrigued in Kamala in more ways than being the first woman elected VP, but just who she is. She came from nowhere to me on the opposite side of the nation. This book is written during her bid for president, so timing has to be known
She....is....amazing!! I am completely at a loss of words regarding how much I admire Kamala Harris and her compassion, beliefs, and work ethic. As I was listening to her read her story I just kept saying “YES! YES! YES! Finally kindness and thoughtfulness in politics again!” Love her loved this book love it all! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A great read. Good insight into Kamala Harris‘s values, determination & can-do approach. I liked the behind-the-scenes look at the political process as district-attorney & attorney-general with stories of family life woven in. Interesting re issues like healthcare, cyber wars, minimum wage & climate change. She comes across as a strong no-nonsense woman whose background gives her a perspective & compassion that will be valuable in the White House.
It‘s time to learn a little more about our new VP 😃 #bookmail #grammaslibrary #girlpower
When your favorite local independent bookstore has a book lover appreciation sale, you go stock up!! The premise to The Thursday Murder Club sounds right up my alley, I can‘t wait to read a book by our VP-Elect, Heartland is a memoir that I heard is even better than Hillbilly Elegy, I‘m starting to get in the Christmas spirit so I found a cute holiday bookish themed read and I saw a timely quote from On Tyranny this week so I had to get it.
I've been scrolling through posts from yesterday and sharing in the joy 😍. Yesterday was a powerful and historic day, and I'm so glad my oldest child was home from college to share this with us! I cried watching my daughters (and son) watching Kamala's speech. Also, we may or may not have busted out the champagne 🍾 at 10:30a.m. for a celebratory toast 🤷♀️If you haven't read The Truths We Hold yet, I highly recommend!
I started this a few months ago but couldn‘t face finishing it until this weekend. I‘m optimistic about having such a smart VP. I loved what she had to say about healthcare and cyber security. This sounds weird but it was a good refresher about all of the issues before the pandemic. #NonFictionNovember
You're looking beautiful on my TV Madam Vice President!💙🤙

Harris shares her personal experience being raised by an Indian mom & Jamaican dad who fought for social justice while she was a baby. Her personal story is inspiring. She digs deep into the changes she believes our country needs. She‘s incredibly open about where she stands on every issue, which I respect. I don‘t agree with everything she says, but I love that there‘s no BS & enjoyed learning about her background & what she‘s done in her career.
