“Full of big ideas and marvellously peculiar characters.” Oh I did love this. It was quiet, gentle, crazy, peculiar, completely absorbing. I fell hard for all those characters and it broke my heart 🐍

Really enjoyed this unique plot with all its drug discovery research aspects. This is a journey amidst Amazon forest with all the wonders & dangers where both self discovery & drug discovery goes hand in hand. I like the characterisation & intricate details ( ignoring some science facts, as it is fiction) This is my first 5 star read of the year 🥰😊😀
A fascinating read set mostly in the Amazon, Dr Annick Swenson is working on a drug which could help women's lives. But the pharmaceutical company haven't heard from her in ages, they send another doctor but then receive a letter saying he dead. Finally Dr Marina Singh is sent and what she discovers is astounding. I didn't really think I would enjoy this but I was very gripped from the beginning.
Not sure why I haven't read this book before because Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors. Love her character development and her strong descriptions of setting. Also everything is not neatly tied up in a bow at the end and perhaps that's why she always leaves me wanting to come back for more of her writing.
This book had everything for me: richly human characters, mysterious and intricate setting, unique premise, depth of emotion, and satisfying resolution -This is my favorite Patchett fiction!

Pharmacologist Dr Singh goes deep into the Amazon forest to try to find the body of her coworker Anders (my husband‘s name) at the behest of his wife Karen (my name). (What a bizarre coincidence!) and to learn the progress of another doctor‘s attempt to find a drug to prolong women‘s fertility. Her search for Anders falls to the side as she assimilates into the tribe & learns about this miracle drug. Very slow at the start but picks up steam ⬇️

A bit slow for me at first, but I ended up really living it by the end. 💚 The way that Patchett writes characters amazes and intrigues me.
One of my favorites by this author. I'm so glad this challenge finally pushed me to read her books.

This is my next read for #AuthorAMonth2021. 😁
Ok those of y‘all reading Ann Patchett for #authoramonth, just she tend to write paragraphs that are longer than sin? Or is it just this book? I‘m enjoying the book but this is driving me crazy! If this is her style I don‘t see me reading another one. It‘s kind of like having the font too small to read. It‘s just taxing.
I hate lengthy paragraphs especially when they start on one page and don‘t end until two pages later. Why??? They really can‘t find an excuse for a paragraph break? It makes my old eyes so tired.
“The news of Anders Eckman‘s death came by way of Aerogram...”
How ominous: the books starts with the death of a character with my husband‘s first name and YIKES, his wife‘s first name is mine! I‘ll try not to take this personally.
4⭐️ || No. 39 I‘m not sure this story has aged well, but Patchett‘s writing is exquisite as always. And it‘s a signed copy!
More from book shopping yesterday: #authoramonth for June. @Soubhiville
Jennifer, thank you so much for this book, the Valentine, and the candy! It totally made my day yesterday. I thought the rules of the capitalistic, head of big pharma, handbook stated that when you have a rogue scientist in the middle of the Amazon you send paid mercenaries to kidnap them and bring them back. Ann Patchett, she believes in a much kinder way. You send your secret lover, many years younger than you, lab partner to the previous 👇🏼
I‘m halfway through State of Wonder and and just feeling like it‘s the less exciting literary version of The Congo. I don‘t even like any of the characters in SOW and it‘s covered in this thick pall of heat, insects, and sadness. At least in The Congo you had hippos eating people and Amy. Also, don‘t tell me but I don‘t think Anders is dead. I think that‘s me wanting this book to be more exciting. 🤞🏼Here‘s to the second half being better.
Not the best of her books I‘ve read. Too many of the details around the drug research were just too far off base that it bugged me.
Every Patchett I‘ve read has been beautifully written and this was no different. But my head just couldn‘t get past the improbability of the story about the development of a life-altering drug in the Amazonian jungle. I think it was a bit too far-fetched me to fully enjoy - between a pick and a so-so.
This was kind of a pointless book. I took it on a road trip and had nothing else to read and then I couldn‘t just not finish it. It finally got interesting at the very end, I did like the way it was all wrapped up. The first two hundred pages were boring, filled with such pointless details and backstory that had nothing to do with the plot.
Two Patchett books with #insectsoncover. One fiction, one nonfiction; both excellent. #magicalMay @Eggs
Ann Patchett is a wonderful writer. The vividness of her descriptions in this book frequently had me catching my breath. But... I found it really hard to believe in the set-up for the story. Why send researchers in quite a different field in search of a renegade scientist? And the problems regarding the drug under development were immediately glaringly obvious. Maybe this is why I never felt connected to the characters. A pick with reservations.
#BookReport 15/20
I read three books this past week. All were good and kept me engaged. Iza‘s Ballad was this week‘s favorite for me!
This book about a medical research facility in the Amazon won‘t make it to my all time favorites but it did the job: it kept me engaged while reading. That‘s worth a lot nowadays. Marina and Annick are two interesting characters, and so is the plot.

I keep being optimistic about the amount of reading I can do in a week.. 😉. Iza‘s Ballad is in progress, the others seem doable as in I‘ve been looking forward to all of them so maybe they can keep my focus!
Have a good week everyone, with or without books, and take care of eachother 💛
What an adventure in the Amazon! Beautifully written with a unique plot. Not my favorite Patchett, but still a great read.

I think I‘m finally getting the hang of Ann Patchett .... book 3 ... & loving her more & more ... and it took me this long ! Books 📚🤷🏼♀️
Am a big Ann Patchett fan and was not disappointed with this fascinating story of medical researchers in the Amazon. Some great character development.

Tagging @shellleigh33 if you want to play - post a pretty cover every day for 7 days, no explanation required.
Honesty: I took all my 7 pictures yesterday while I was thinking about it so I‘d have them ready. 😉
My first #bookhaul post from three years ago. The only one of these books I've read is State of Wonder. I love Ann Patchett! 💜
#BookHaulChallenge
I‘ve only read her Bel Canto (loved it) and this is on my tbr.
A pharmacologist travels deep into the jungles in Brazil in pursuit of a scientist and must fight her way back. Sounds like a perilous journey.

Can‘t hold a candle to Bel Canto (not much can) but a darn good read.
My top six books so far this year...! All 5 star reads! 👍🏻
The Half Priced Books book fair was so good to us! This is one stack from my pile!

Very close to perfection. The best book I‘ve read in a couple of years. Transportive.
Can‘t get better than this! What are you reading this week?
