In this spellbinding and suspenseful debut, a young woman haunted by the past returns home to care for her ailing mother and begins to dig deeper into her sisters unsolved murder. Sixteen years ago, Sylvies sister Persephone never came home. Out too late with the boyfriend she was forbidden to see, Persephone was missing for three days before her body was foundand years later, her murder remains unsolved. In the present day, Sylvie returns home to care for her estranged mother, Annie, as she undergoes treatment for cancer. Prone to unexplained Dark Days even before Persephones death, Annies once-close bond with Sylvie dissolved in the weeks after their loss, making for an uncomfortable reunion all these years later. Worse, Persephones former boyfriend, Ben, is now a nurse at the cancer center where Annie is being treated. Sylvies always believed Ben was responsible for the murderbut she carries her own guilt about that night, guilt that traps her in the past while the world goes on around her. As she navigates the complicated relationship with her mother, Sylvie begins to uncover the secrets that fill their houseand what really happened the night Persephone died. As it turns out, the truth will set you free, once you can bear to look at it. The Winter Sister is a mesmerizing portrayal of the complex bond between sisters, between mothers and daughters alike, and forces us to ask ourselveshow well do we know the people we love most?

The plot of this will sound familiar to anyone that has read anything in the thriller genre. Woman returns home despite [insert complicated relationship with family] and unwinds the mystery of [insert traumatic event]. A spin on an old trope can be great, but this isn‘t that. Very predictable (I figured out the “twist” almost immediately), and the protagonist‘s lack of deduction skills defied logic. In the end, I was just bored by this. 2⭐️

@BeckyWithTheGoodBooks ‘s #lmpbc choice coming through as my slump buster. I have …too many… books going but my brain hasn‘t been sinking into the stories… But I could NOT get enough of Annie‘s gaslighting & all the family drama in this one!

It‘s a small thrill to pull a book languishing on my shelves to discover a good read was awaiting. I bought into the mystery as it unfolded considering unfortunately this kind of stuff happens. The only stretch for me was how the relationship between Ben and Sylvie ended. ….Can you tell from my stack I tend toward Summer vs Winter titles!?

In my humble opinion, this debut was neither spellbinding nor suspenseful, but it did keep my interest enough to finish in a day. I wasn‘t really fond of any of the characters, didn‘t understand all the stupid lying everyone did, and thought the ending could have been improved on, but I stuck around to see the mystery solved. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My #AboutSisters book for #Booked2022

EadieB Lots and lots of secrets abound here. We learn about the mother's secrets and then the book takes off. It started out slow and then took off and never returned. The characters were secretive and so was the plot that took me to the surprising ending. This is a great debut and I will look forward to another book by this author. 2y

The story was way too predictable and the characters were too flat.

This was a good rainy Saturday read. Some of the storylines were a bit odd and predictable. But still a good read and shows that family secrets can be deadly. @michellelav you will enjoy.

At its centre, this is about the murder of the protagonist Sylvie‘s sister, Persephone, which happened 16 years prior, when Sylvie was 14 and Persephone, 18. Sylvie always believed her sister‘s boyfriend was responsible, though he was never charged. Now Sylvie is home to look after her mother who has cancer. Secrets are the order of the day. This is less a thriller and more a well-written family drama. A great read.

I feel like this would make a great Lifetime movie. I knew how it would play out before it ended but I was still compelled to keep reading.

Just okay. I am not sure what it was about the book or the characters but I just could not get into the story.
Sylvie is living with guilt from the murder of her older sister Persephone which occurred some 16 years earlier. When her mother becomes ill she must go home to care for her & her visit stirs up the ghosts & pain from her past.
I found none of the characters relatable & couldn't wait for the book to end. Not one of my favorites.

I loved the scenes between Sylvie and her mother the most. Her mother shut her and the rest of the world out and became an alcoholic after her sister‘s murder and to see the issues and sadness confronted was really good and helped them to heal. They both thought they had each other figured out. I love the toxic mother-daughter relationship in a thriller/mystery. I think it adds a bit to the story for me personally.

16 years after her sisters still unsolved murder, Sylvie returns home to care for her estranged and sick mother. Can she overcome the guilt she feels after she finds herself back in her childhood bedroom she once shared with her sister Persephone. Will her truths set her free?

This was a pretty quick read for me. I enjoyed the storyline and the depth of the characters but the ending seemed predictable and somewhat unfinished. Solid 🌟🌟🌟.8 stars

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this mystery from #BOTM — it wasn‘t perfect but it kept me intrigued til the end. I don‘t want to give away spoilers so I‘ll just say it was excellent for a debut novel. 4⭐️

This was really slow at first. And then it went really quickly. But it was sort of predictable. Persephone has died. Seventeen years later, Sylvie is back in town, caring for her mother. And she starts poking into the mystery of what happened to her sister.

If you follow me you know it's pretty difficult to get me not to like a book. So be shocked when I say, I hated this book. It was described as an amazing murder mystery, tied into a story about familial forgiveness and personal growth.

This was a mild murder mystery, void of any suspense. It had one super awkward sex scene and a pretty conspicuous ending.

I would not recommend this book. But if you've read it, I would love your feedback :-)

My first finished book of #24B42020! A decent thriller-mystery. All the characters had secrets they were keeping from everyone else, and between trying to guess what they were as well as the whodunnit, it held my interest!

So-so mystery/thriller. Mostly plausible, but I found some of the characters‘ behaviors a little hard to take. Writing needed some work - too many awkward similes and letting go of breath she didn‘t know she‘d been holding. 2⭐️

underthebelljar Major eye roll whenever I read that sentence in a book lol it‘s so overused in YA especially 5y
batsy That breath line always ticks me off, too. Editors should be there to catch that 🙃 5y
Redwritinghood @batsy @BookishJess It‘s so cliche now, no one should really ever use it. But the similes bothered me more. They were often bad and stuck out from the rest of the text. 5y
