Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream
Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream | Barack Obama
111 posts | 92 read | 2 reading | 104 to read
In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners' minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Obama called "the audacity of hope." The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama's call for a different brand of politics--a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the "endless clash of armies" we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy." He explores those forces--from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media--that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment. At the heart of this book is Barack Obama's vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats--from terrorism to pandemic--that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy--where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories about family, friends, and members of the Senate is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus. A public servant and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a skeptic, and above all a student of history and human nature, Barack Obama has written a book of transforming power. Only by returning to the principles that gave birth to our Constitution, he says, can Americans repair a political process that is broken, and restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans. Those Americans are out there, he writes--"waiting for Republicans and Democrats to catch up with them."

But the years had also taken their toll. Some of it was just a function of my getting older, I suppose, for if you are paying attention, each successive year will make you more intimately acquainted with all of your flaws- the blind spots, the recurring habits of thought that may be genetic or may be environmental, but that will almost certainly worsen with time, as surely as the hitch in your walk turns to pain in your hip.

An interesting view into Obama‘s political and personal thoughts prior to his 2008 run for the presidency. It‘s curious to see which priorities (universal healthcare for example) espoused here never came to light during his presidency, while his general ethos and perspective on politics remains the same through 2016 and beyond.

My attention span is terrible this week; it took me longer than planned to finish this book written by then-future President Obama. I wish I had read this years ago, but it was nice to immerse myself again in the politics of the Obama era. While I don‘t agree with him on everything, I admire the thoughtfulness, empathy, and intelligence found in his policies and positions.

President Obama is quite eloquent;however, there are no big revelations in this book. We all know what should be done, what needs to be done, but no one wants to risk their spot on the ladder to put such ideas into practice...especially those in politics. Still, it was nice to hear someone speak in a dignified and thoughtful manner about the problems we face as a nation and ad individual citizens.

silentrequiem I was listening to this the day after the election while driving cross country. I nearly cried hearing him 6y
Nebklvr @silentrequiem I wouldn‘t have been able to listen to it so close to catastrophe. Too angry. 6y
silentrequiem @Nebklvr The book I had just finished was Notorious RBG. I listened to the last chapter that morning after. It was a sucker punch as it was all about RBG's hopes for the first woman president. I already had Audacity queued up. It was both calming to hear him talk eloquently and intelligently, and also sad. 6y
Nebklvr @silentrequiem You are a warrior to be able to get through those two on that day. I would have to self medicate with cheesecake and chocolate 6y

Fabulous explanations of his values (narrated by the man himself!) & major problems facing the country (partisanship being one of the greatest). I especially loved how he admits senators easily lose touch with average Americans while accruing donations & how hard it was to maintain his relationship.

It‘s sad that despite his progressive ideas, he was unable to make many come to fruition. I *hope* to see the same gaze forward in future candidates.

Started listening to this at work, for my lunchtime walk. I love listening to Barack Obama‘s voice, he still gives me hope. He talks about feeling empathy for others, and learning to understand that some things mean more to one group of people than others but it doesn‘t need to divide us. It was written a dozen years ago, but I hope one day to see more respect for diversity in this country.

“I believe in this country. I believe in the American people. I believe that people are more good than bad. I believe tragic things happen.
