Mortal Word
Mortal Word | Genevieve Cogman
In the latest novel in Genevieve Cogman's historical fantasy series, the fate of worlds lies in the balance. When a dragon is murdered at a peace conference, time-travelling Librarian spy Irene must solve the case to keep the balance between order, chaos...and the Library. When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation. Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more Librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some Librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder--but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a Librarian who committed the crime?

While I could still wish for a slightly different ratio of relationship development and mystery solving to political intrigue and interpersonal drama/sniping, on balance I found this entry in the series more fun than frustrating, and the ending more satisfying. Cogman is effective in goading my emotions, which does allow for a fully involved reading experience. Irene continues to be a badass par excellence. On to the next! ...in a week or four..

Robotswithpersonality I want my Irene/Kai/Vale throuple, dammit! 13mo

Now this one was a whirlwind and honestly my favorite in the series this far! Irene, Vale, Silver, Moodan and Kai(by request) have been placed at the center of a murder during the oh so delicate Peace Conference, hope by to procure peace between the Far and Dragons. I must say, I did not see the twists and turns coming in this one and I truly enjoy how all the characters are settling into a place they feel they belong!

Finished last month, but forgot to review! As with every book in this series, I'm in love! I never get tired of following Irene, who may just love books more than me, around to a new world and adventure. The characters are well rounded and likeable. The story never really slows down and by the time you are done, it almost feels like it went too fast. Like a piece of cake you had hoped to savor, but ate in a few bites. I'm always longing for more.

Finally, after 6 months, I get a day to myself. Or at least a few hours. . . I don't plan on moving until it's time to get the kids. ☕📖🐈🥰

"Apparently some responses were hardwired into the human brain, right up there with this isn't what it looks like when caught with an open safe and a stolen book."

So many things I love about these books, but one of the things I love the most is the smart humor that makes me snicker out loud.

After the Lost Plot, this one really picked up to match the rest of the series. Its definitely worth a read and fighting through the heavy reading.
Once again, alot of unexpected twists and turns, problem solving that will always leave the reader guessing.
This series is amazing, it doesn't get enough praise. It's inspirational and the mind of Cogman is unique and original that will leave you in a book slump.

You know that thing where you love a series so much that you hoard the most recent book but then you accidentally hoard it for too long, so long that you forget how good the series is, and you start wondering if you even want to read it but then you do anyway and you‘re like “argh! how did I forget this series was so good?!?!” No? Just me? 😉 I definitely remember now how much I love the Invisible Library series.

First time away from the house since last Saturday! Celebrated the melting snow with a quiet lunch and my book. Am loving this one and it‘s flying by too fast.

Snow day number two. I shoveled so now I get to read. I have been hoarding this one but now there‘s a newer one in the series so I‘m free to dive in!

aartichapati How do you like this series? I am so intrigued by the premise! But have not tried it yet. 5y
kristenm @aartichapati I really like it as a fun, adventurous series. It‘s got fae and dragons but all in human form and urban settings (most of the time). It‘s just a good strong female protagonist series for those times when you need some girl power and lots of libraries. 😊 5y

I‘ve really enjoyed reading this series. I‘ve read the previous one quite a while ago, which is probably a good thing, as even so I felt that there‘s a certain repetitiveness to the story, a similarity to the previous books. Regardless, it was a fun read. I especially like the universe Cogman created here.

ju.ca.no Ah I will read this soon! I loved the others so far😍😍 5y
LittleBug @ju.ca.no then you‘ll love this one too🤩 5y

This is the 5th book in this series called The Invisible Library. Again Irene, Kai and Detective Vale are called upon to help solve a murder, involving dragons, the fae and librarians at a top secret summit! #bookseries

5/5💚s

I don‘t know how it is possible but I have stumbled upon a series where each book is better than the last! This one was no exception to that theme! More danger, more relational tension (and not just sexual but political), a more intense mystery, more characters, and more of Irene being her badass self! After finishing I just HAD to know if another book was coming (pictured). Now I cannot wait until January 2020!!! *girly squeals*

The Invisible Library is such a strange series for me. On one hand, I love these books about magical librarians stealing rare books from alternate realities. Every time I read one of these, I‘m happy. But on the other hand, I NEVER remember what happened in the previous book. I‘m always completely confused for the first 100 or so pages...but it never stops me from reading the next one!

This series is just SO. MUCH. FUN. Steampunk librarian spies, dragons, Fae - what more do you want? I think it gets better with every book and this is definitely my favorite of the series so far. Can't wait to see what she does with book six.
