Callie was awesome main character: she wanted to do things that society didn't allow her to do. Rebellious characters are delightful! Ralston had a heart in the right place and I liked how he treated Callie.

This was really solid story but when you guess every twist beforehand it doesn't feel that intriguing.

For me this wasn't that special but there were so many positive things that I can't say this was bad.

#LittensLoveRomance October book discussion Hi guys! Thanks so much for reading with me this month. Here are a few discussion questions get things started- I love seeing what you guys think! Feel free to add your own as well.

slategreyskies No, I wouldn‘t have had the courage to reach for something I wanted like Callie did. I hate to say that about myself, but I‘ve often been one of the people on the sidelines. I think that‘s what made this book so interesting to me. The possibility of there being another life out there if only one were brave enough to claim it. 2y
StayCurious @slategreyskies I‘m the exact same. Definitely a wallflower 2y
See All 20 Comments
KristiAhlers I‘m a so afraid (so sad to admit) to rock the boat as it were that I‘d never have done what Callie did. It‘s so odd my sister was the total rebel and didn‘t care if she got into trouble and I went out of my way to blend. Wasn‘t going to be the one to make waves. 2y
KristiAhlers And I think Gabriel was totally caught up with the attraction. And maybe wanted to see how far he could push before she let society rules stop her. And I adored the other characters. I think that‘s one of the strengths of this author she gives enough you want their story while still enjoying the one you‘re reading. 2y
KristiAhlers It‘s possible Callie finally got to the point she wanted to happen to life rather than life happening to her. I know after awhile when I got older and married and wasn‘t home anymore I started to take more risks with not worrying so much what other people thought although I do still struggle with that at times. It‘s possible she decided she was going to “live” and Gabriel was actually a safe place to push boundaries. 2y
julesG I might have changed my ways and gone for the things I wanted. I've never been one to fit into a certain mould. I might even have rebelled sooner. And yes, all that considering the historical background. 2y
julesG I agree with @KristiAhlers re: Gabriel. I also think Callie was at her Carpe Diem! moment in life and Gabriel was the perfect partner in crime. He offered her the right amount of shove but pushed back enough for Callie not to risk her standing. (if that makes sense) 2y
julesG I'm going to read a few of the other books in the series. I liked the secondary characters. 2y
julesG The Rake+Virgin trope feels weird to me every time. I understand the appeal, I understand the historical background, but my feminist mind wants equal opportunities for everyone. 2y
peanutnine Callie was such a strong character - I definitely don't think I'd be confident enough to break out like she did. I wasn't surprised with her sudden change though. I think the prologue did a good job showing that she was more than a wallflower 2y
peanutnine I haven't read many historical romances so I didn't realize rake-virgin was a trope. I thought it was well done here though. I liked Gabriel as a character and didn't feel like he was taking advantage of Callie and he was just as swept up in her 2y
peanutnine I loved the secondary characters and will definitely read the rest of the series. I'm excited to follow their stories 2y
OriginalCyn620 1. I‘d like to say that I would‘ve been strong enough to do what Callie did if I lived in that time period, but I probably would‘ve just played it safe and been a “good” girl. I loved Callie‘s gumption! 2y
OriginalCyn620 2. I know Callie was an innocent, but really, I don‘t think she ever did anything she didn‘t want to when it came to Gabriel. As for him, I think he genuinely was drawn to Callie and got swept up in her. Don‘t think he deliberately took advantage. 2y
OriginalCyn620 3. I really loved both of Callie‘s siblings! They were both great on their own but the dynamic between the 3 siblings was a lot of fun. And of course, I loved to hate Oxford! This story definitely needed a cringeworthy second suitor for Callie. I‘m not much of a series girl, but if this group read another, I‘d be in! (edited) 2y
OriginalCyn620 4. I loved Callie! For her time, it was brave of her to make a list and then to actually do the things on it. I think you can absolutely change yourself or your life if you want to, so to me, Callie‘s journey was believable. 2y
OriginalCyn620 5. I don‘t read much historical romance, and am pretty sure this was my first in this trope, so I don‘t have a frame of reference. But looking at it as say, an opposites attract kind of thing, I do enjoy that trope. I was here for it! Personally, I loved Gabriel. He knew what he was and didn‘t try to pretend otherwise. So at least he was honest about it! But we also got glimpses of his softer side. In all honesty though, I do love a bad boy! 2y
CarolynM I‘m not sure I‘d have gone for the things Callie did, but I suspect I‘d have rocked the boat in other ways. I did think some of Gabriel‘s behaviour verged on exploitation. Regardless of whether she was consenting or not, her innocence (ignorance really) was more prized by society of the time than anything else about her as he very well knew. If he really cared about her he wouldn‘t have threatened that. 👇 2y
CarolynM 👆Terrific secondary characters, especially Gabriel‘s siblings, but I probably won‘t read any more in the series. I did like Callie, but I wasn‘t taken with Gabriel. 2y

Historical romance isn‘t really my thing so I don‘t have a lot to compare this with. I liked the feisty heroine a lot but I wasn‘t really sold on the hero - some of his behaviour felt a bit too close to exploitation. A fun read overall. Thanks to @StayCurious and the #LitsyLovesRomance group.

#LittensLoveRomance I finished the last couple chapters in one sitting because I couldn‘t stop! The heartbreak scene and impending dual was so full of emotion I had to see what happened. The end was so satisfying and I was left feeling happy with the book on a whole. Sarah Maclean writes excellent characters. I can‘t wait to continue this series and read her newer books as well. Thank you to those who read along with me - discussion on Sunday.

julesG I used a day of 'forced' audiobook reading and binged the whole book. I will certainly read some of her other books. 2y
CarolynM This was a good one for a daily read along, right up to the last 3 or 4 chapters where I just had to keep going to the end! Thanks Renee, I enjoyed your comments along the way😘 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.22. Third time‘s the charm right? Or is it fourth? Anyway, Ralston proposes to Callie in a truly vulnerable moment and she finally says yes. But I sense more trouble will come on the horizon. Ralston is thinking - never a good thing haha. And what about Oxford? I bet he‘s not out of the picture just yet. I think I will finish the book today to really get my HEA.

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.21: I‘m sad for Callie. The repulsive Oxford tries to announce they‘re getting married and comes close to compromising her. Then Ralston tries to get her to agree to marry him again -and Callie finally breaks down and tells him she loves him, and that‘s why she can‘t marry him. She will not settle and she knows he does not love her back. Or does he? Ralston definitely has feelings - he just has to dig deep and let them out.

peanutnine This chapter was so heartbreaking but I was glad she finally vocalized her feelings 2y
OriginalCyn620 I love that Callie was strong enough to declare her feelings while Ralston was not. Overall, she‘s a great character! 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.20: Ralston goes to sulk at his club and brood over the fact Callie turned down his proposal (twice) - while there he gets upset with Oxford and doubles his bet that Callie won‘t have Oxford. Maybe not the smartest thing to do when she‘s so upset with Ralston…Callie goes to get her dress and comes face to face with the ex…awkward conversation ensues but also enlightening for Callie.

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.19: Callie is rightfully pissed at Ralston and his guilt-laden proposal. When he shows up the next morning and announces that they are in fact getting married-and she turns him down again-he claims this isn‘t over. She laid it out for him and put her heart on the line - she will not marry a man who will resent and regret their marriage. Poor Callie- she loves him so much. Ralston just needs to realize he has feelings too!

This reminded me of Rose from "Titanic" - just saying.

Wallflower decides that she can do all the things men are allowed to do, because she's so high on the shelf it won't ruin her reputation.

The rake she's had a crush on for over a decade helps her. He will not fall for her, because of family reasons.

Cue the usual misunderstandings and miscommunications that end in a HEA.

Low pick.

#LittensLoveromance Ch.18: First…🔥🔥❤️ But then Ralston starts thinking. And thinking leads to regrets. And a hasty gentlemanly marriage proposal. Which sours Callie‘s post glow a bit, unfortunately. She clearly loves him but wants his love in return. She does not want to be his obligatory wife. Poor Callie. What‘s a girl to do? I‘d play hard to get for awhile. She always falls into his arms. Maybe it‘s about time to flip the script a bit.

BarkingMadRead Not exactly the kind of proposal a girl dreams of 🙄🙄 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.17: Callie goes on her next adventure escorted by a reluctant Ralston. She dresses like a man once more, goes to a men‘s club, and in a private room, gets to play cards with Ralston. During their game they ask each other questions and Callie reflects on what it would be like to be a courtesan. I like how they‘re really letting their barriers down around each other and growing closer, although both should protect their hearts

OriginalCyn620 Yes! I love their chemistry, but I feel like I‘m on a roller coaster. Those two seriously need to talk to each other and not assume things! But I guess that would make for a more boring story 😂 2y

Ralston and his sister get closer and Ralston realizes he needs to apologize to Callie. Whew! Will Callie realize she deserves better? Will Ralston realize he‘s falling for her or will he let her go?

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.10:What an intense chapter! ⬆️jealousy & emotions flying btw Callie & Ralston at Juliana‘s debut. It‘s at the opera and the lead singer just so happens to be Ralston‘s ex mistress, although Callie thinks she‘s not an ex but a current. And Baron Oxford shows his face in all its toothy glory and pisses Ralston off. C&R fight (and kiss) and Ralston calls Callie a coward-which I‘m sure is going to push her to do something rash.

#LittensLoveRomance It was a tight race as usual, but our October Read has been selected! I personally love Sarah MacLean and this is one of her first novels. Hopefully that makes it easy to get from your libraries. I‘ll post a reading schedule closer to the end of the month for those who want to follow along. Thanks to all who voted!

I avoided MacLean‘s debut because of its ridiculous title. Having read all of her other series, it‘s clear this is her debut. It‘s not dreadful, but it‘s not my favorite by any means. There are awkward phrases and it‘s lighter on plot that any of her other books, but it has glimpses of the elements I love about her work. It‘s not Insta-love, the supporting cast is fun, and I love Callie and how Ralston falls for her. 3 1/2 ⭐️

I had fun revisiting this story! This author has long been a go to for me when it comes to historic romance. #bigsummerreadathon #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick

Well that was fun! I don‘t normally like regencies too much - so manner manners! But this was a truly delightful read. I liked the characters and the funny situations they got into. Be warned though - lots of sexy time! Which is not something I‘m used to in a regency. Is it the norm now?

The last time I read this book was in 2012, so this was one of those delightful “it‘s like I‘m reading it for the first time!” reads. Happy to report that NRTBWRAR has stood the test of time & is as wonderful as ever! Dynamic, fiercely witty characters + hilarious dialogue, not to mention an utterly delightful plot. The romancing did move a little too quickly at times, but all in all this is a definite keep on my bookshelf. ★★★★☆.

Getting reading for the new #Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn and Netflix which is coming out Christmas Day. I decided to read another great Regency romance by Sarah MacLean and I loved it. The audiobook version is a must. Read my full review at https://www.theupstairslibrary.com

This was pure magic! My first book by MacLean, and I am quickly loading my Libby queue to listen to more of her works. Strong, independent woman who wants to break social decorum to “live” a bit. Her list brings her the biggest rake imaginable, and the story progresses from there. So good!

theladygreer Everything MacLean is so good. I think I've gone through every book of hers our library has on Overdrive! 5y
Mishu94 I‘m downloading this! I need some romance 😩 5y
Laughterhp My favorite “series” of Sarah MacLean is the Rules of Scoundrels (though I‘ve never read a bad MacLean) 5y
Librarybelle @Laughterhp I have that series queued after this one! I have a friend who loves her books and told me I had to listen to that series too 5y
Laughterhp Oh good! I hope you love it! 5y

I love Sarah MacLean but hadn't read this earlier series of hers -- it's just as good as her later work, with all the classic MacLean elements -- headstrong heroine, hero irresistibly drawn to her, a great surrounding cast of characters, and of course wit and romance to burn.
