Diary of an Oxygen Thief: Anonymous | Anonymous
Hurt people hurt people. Say Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer's assistant and somehow they met in Bright Lights Big City. He's blinded by love. She by ambition DIARY OF AN OXYGEN THIEF is honest hilarious and heartrending but above all a very real account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Woof. Privileged white male whines. A lot. The most interesting parts were the beginning in his fu*k boy stage but that didn‘t last long. Even when karma bit his ass in the end it was still dull. Almost bought the sequel with this and I‘m glad I put it back 🥱

#DoubleSpin

I‘m upset cuz I marked this off for #pantone2022 cuz the paper I printed of the colors matched the cover with coffee quartz but digitally it doesn‘t match at all 😥

Clwojick Some of my matches are like that too. If you think it matches, then I say it counts! 💛 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! And I've been the same with the Pantone colors - some match better on paper than they do on my computer!!! I just roll with it! 3y

so hard to get through. pretentious in every sense of the word and quite honestly boring. if you want to read about how a man manipulates women, then is boring, then gets manipulated by a woman, go right ahead but this just sucked.

Diary of an Oxygen Thief | Patience Smith

Genre: Romantic Memoir
The author writes about how he can't help but hurt innocent girls because he is hurting too. I would describe the author's tone as candid because he tells the story about how he destroys relationships with the utmost amount of honesty. This is seen when he paints a picture of how he gave Penelope, his first love, the keys to destroying his heart and called it love in disguise.

This was like reading every strange, hateful, whiny post/comment made by mediocre misogynists online in the guise of a decently written novel. There's a sequel and I don't understand why.

The point that summed this book up for me is when he is considering how he might retrieve the alcohol from the glass that his own blood has spilled into. Desperate for a drink.

Well it's titled Diary of an oxygen thief for a reason. Seemed like a pretty sound perspective from an immature egotistical alcoholic, ie. very unreliable narrator. Wouldn't spend money buying this, glad I loaned it from the library. As useless as staring into the bottom of a pint glass.

"We are not punished for our sins, we are punished by them." Possibly first and last sensible thing said in this book and it's on page 25.

Well I‘m not sure about this one. I didn‘t bail and I was interested to know what would happen but when I got to the end I felt very meh about the whole thing. There were moments that really hit on the ways in which “hurt people hurt people” which I really appreciated so not a pan but not a pick either - first book of 2019 finished!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but for adult men. I was attracted to the cover, but it's 3 hours of my life I can never recover.
It's about an alcoholic man who gets off on hurting women, by waiting until they fall in love with him and then dumping them. Then he has it done to him. The End. There. That's it. And it's written like that. He says the book is his experience, so he's a rapist too.

The narrator is unlikable and unreliable. A recovering alcoholic, he becomes obsessed with a young woman and this book takes us down his rabbit hole. 2.5 ⭐️⭐️

I was originally attracted to this book because of the popularity of its first line, but stuck with it because of the truths it tells about human nature. I have a friend who read it and didn't think much of it, however I believe that I found it more enjoyable due to trying to imagine Holden as the main character 😂

Bottom line is don't let the opening draw you in too much, this book isn't for everyone

What a gripping tale! I found this book after my cousin posted a picture on social media of the opening paragraph. It's so narcissistic and melancholy but it just keeps reeling you in. I both dislike and root for the author, pity yet scorn. It's very well written. Wish I knew who the author was!

1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
2. Diary of an Oxygen Thief (I didn't love-love it, but it doesn't deserve the hate it gets)
3. Twilight
4. YA, especially romantic YA.
5. Mr. Darcy.
6. Sarah J. Maas
7. "Normal girls" who suddenly discover that they're mythological beings.
8. Crossfire.
9. The Walking Dead. I adore both, but the comics have a special place in my heart.

Myhometownandbeyond I DNFed the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. (edited) 7y

...Diary of an Oxygen Thief, a 2006 self-published novella by an anonymous Dutch author. It has gained a cult following over the years, making its way into the shelves of famed book giant, Barnes & Noble, notorious for not selling any works not from a publishing house.

An interesting story. It was like you were sitting in a coffee shop or pub being told this by a stranger wanting to get something off their chest. It was totally messed up and entertaining. As for what Aisling did, well she was an absolutely viscous ****. I'd have given the story more stars but there were tons of grammatical and spelling errors and I hate that. Also he came across as a whiner and I hate that.

I liked hurting girls. Mentally, not physically, I never hit a girl in my life. [...] The thing is, I got off on it. I really enjoyed it. It‘s like when you hear serial killers say they feel no regret, no remorse for all the people they killed. I was like that. Loved it. [...] And it was legal. I think I killed a few of them. Their souls I mean.

"I liked hurting girls" is the opening line of this book. Our prot. is an a$$hole who is misogynist and psychotic and gets off psychologically putting down women, but in an American Psycho sort of way. You know he will get his comeuppance, but you have to travel with him for 150 pages. I don't know why, but this was a great read and I am glad to see the sequel is coming back on the market. Not for all, but interesting. Warnings, obviously.

Leelee.reads Your review makes this sound like a horrible read, but it ended up a pick. What makes the book work in spite of the icky protagonist? 8y
TrishB My daughter is reading at the moment and I'll read after so we can discuss. From what she says I'm not sure I'm looking forward to it! 8y
See All 7 Comments
NerdyRev @Leelee.reads It is why I used the American Psycho comparison. Patrick Bateman has no redeeming qualities, but you still are drawn to him, as a reader, because he is so vile. The unnamed protagonist in this is a horrible person and you are in his head for the duration while rooting for his destruction. While you root for it, the question becomes-what makes you better than him if you want to see him crushed? 8y
NerdyRev @TrishB It won't be a book for everyone, but I did wind up enjoying it. It is a great read as you are supposed to hate the protagonist. I think the payoff could have been better, but it was still a good payoff. It is a good read so much so that I am looking forward to the sequel which was pulled, but is being re-released in March. 8y
TrishB @NerdyRev thanks! Will try to get to it soon. 8y

Finished this short book tonight and really unsure how I feel about it. It is a completely unsettling depiction of misogyny, alcoholism and paranoia, with a cast of horrible characters and and a narrator that is so unreliable that you are never entirely sure what to believe. However, the novel succeeds in forcing the reader's gaze towards the myriad ways in which people can destroy each other. Given the subject matter, I appreciate the brevity.

TrishB !!! My 15 yr old daughter has asked for this for Christmas, my mind is boggling now after that description! 8y
Gleefulreader @TrishB Wow, that is an odd ask for a 15 yo! It really is just filled with horrible people being horrible to each other with some sexual content. Not really festive 😂 8y

britt_brooke @Gleefulreader I was really surprised that I liked it, because much of it is pretty off-putting. Honestly, I think it's because my dad is a recovering alcoholic so I think that helped me understand this character. Maybe? Idk. 🤔 8y
