The Complete Essays of Montaigne | Michel de Montaigne

"To begin depriving death of its greatest advantage over us, let us adopt a way clean contrary to that common one; let us deprive death of its strangeness, let us frequent it, let us get used to it; let us have nothing more often in mind than death... We do not know where death awaits us: so let us wait for it everywhere."
"To practice death is to practice freedom. A man who has learned how to die has unlearned how to be a slave."

‪“We are all dual natured. Every gift is light and dark… Elementals burn down forests as easily as they water them with rain... Even those with the sight are often cursed with madness and paranoia. Even the poisoners are also healers.”‬

”On our wedding night," she said, "I will cut out your tongue and swallow it. Then both tongues that spoke our marriage vows will belong to me, and I will be wed only to myself. You will most likely choke to death on your own blood, which will be unfortunate, but I will be both husband and wife and therefore not a widow to be pitied”

“There was a hunger inside me, and there always had been. That hunger was stronger than pain, stronger than horror. It gnawed even after everything else inside me had given up. It was not hope; it did not soar; it slithered, clawed, and dragged, and it would not let me stop”

“My thought is me: that's why I can't stop. I exist because I think… and I can't stop myself from thinking. At this very moment - it's frightful - if I exist, it is because I am horrified at existing. I am the one who pulls myself from the nothingness to which I aspire.”

“Maybe there is a law after all. Of nature. Like gravity. An unwritten axiom that governs our emotional dealings. What you do comes back to you with twice the force, fuck it, three times the force. We are not punished for our sins we are punished by them”

ZacPaup @LaylaMazar the book looks like an unknown gem. 6y

LaylaMazar @ZacPaup tbh the cover basically drew me in & the whole anonymous author element kept me hooked. This book was never on my “to read” list. 6y
ZacPaup @LaylaMazar I like the anonymous author gimmick. All that matters is, what is between the front and back cover. 6y
LaylaMazar @ZacPaup you‘re absolutely right🤟🏼 6y

Frankly I‘m not into motivational books, they‘re full of repetitive and corny quotes and ideas. However, I have a soft spot for survivors and survival stories in general. Aside from the book itself, Bear Grylls is a miraculous human being and he‘s truly inspiring. His show “Man vs. Wild” is the only reason I decided to give this book a shot.

This book basically proves what I‘ve been told by a wise young man which is the addition of an F word within the argument doesn‘t make the point valid or true. However, i found myself very keen on the last chapter under the name “and then you die” but that‘s solely due to a personal preference.
P.S. Last year was the year of standing on cliffs for me, literally. And at some point I couldn‘t subdue the urge to.

LaylaMazar “You too are going to die, and that‘s because you too were fortunate enough to have lived. You may not feel this. But go stand on a cliff sometime, and maybe you will” 6y

The “Watersong” series continues. Lullaby drew me in and kept me hooked. Thus, the high expectations I set out for tidal were a bit unfair and ruined the book for me:)
