This one got my interest (a little bit) about half way through, but even so, it‘s fantasy, so names, places, hard to understand or remember. I don‘t like trying to learn different fantastical worlds (it takes way too long to get to the story as one tries to puzzle out all those weird names). Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I hated that they referred to ages by various numbers of “seasons” – when I hear “season”, I think four seasons in a year, so divide that number by 4 and you‘ve got years (but then, maybe this isn‘t the case on the planets these kids live on). I don‘t think that‘s what the author meant (four seasons in a year), but it bothered me. 6mo

I'm really not sure about this book. I haven't been able to get into it and find myself wanting to listen to other other books or podcasts when I play it. Not really sure what it is about this one that I'm not connecting with. I've been listening to it for about 3 weeks - usually not a promising sign that I'll finish the thing. The plot seems iffy and drags on quite a bit. Anyone else feel the same way?

This is a brand new series, quite different from the divergent series. I like this one very much, loved the characters and the story line, definitely a page turner, will read the second one.

I really enjoyed this book. The fates were a really cool take on powers. I also really liked the girl main character, she was strong and didn't lean on the male. They had an very cute subtle relationship. They leaned on each other's strengths instead of just 1 person being the strong character. They also faced their demons without each other, which I thought was kind of refreshing.

Was kind of hard to start since we're thrown into the new world with tons of terms and character named. But I loved it. The currentgifts are such a cool idea and I love how they work. I adore Akos and thing Cyra is an amazing character.

After the disappointing end to her Divergent series, I‘d forgotten all about this author. A snow day prompted me to pick up this one. The quality of the writing is perfect. The romantic elements are light (kissing). The plot is heavy with suffering and difficult choices. I liked it, but as with her other books, I found myself wishing for just a touch of comic relief. Alas, I knew up front there would be none forthcoming.

Life is too short to read Veronica Roth.

I do love the title and the cover, though!

Scochrane26 I‘ve wondered if the books she‘s written after the divergent series are good. She lost me with Allegiant, I was unhappy with most of that book. 5y
Texreader I‘m not fond of her writing either even though I liked the story told in the Divergent series. It‘s just that her writing, to be blunt, is poor. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Scochrane26 Divergent book 1 was so good, but it's like the early success has gone to her head, because everything after that just keeps going downhill. I have this but still havn't read it. 5y
ferskner @Scochrane26 @Texreader @LibrarianRyan totally! I'm still mad that I wasted a week if my life on the Divergent series. I think she has good ideas and then doesn't know what to do with them. She does have an adult novel coming out soon, and I'm curious to know if that improves anything. 5y

The world makes no sense, characters act contrary to their motivations just to advance the plot, and the writing is muddled. I'm not going to be a fan, I'm afraid. I wondered, and now I know.

rretzler That‘s too bad. I have this one coming up later this year. I was afraid that I might think the same, so I haven‘t purchased the next one in the series yet 6y

There were lots of things I loved about this book, like how you start the book with one culture‘s PoV and then switch to the other culture‘s PoV. It was an awesome way to show how perspective plays such a role in how we define good and evil. I also liked the characters and the world and idea of the current. That said, I feel like the book didn‘t quite maximize on its strengths to its fullest. Regardless, I liked this much more than Divergent :D

To be fair, I started this story with super high hopes since I was such a big fan of the Divergent trilogy. The story was good. I enjoyed it. I just didn‘t fall head over heels in love with it. The sneak peek of the second #audiobook was intriguing. Reviews have hinted that book 2 is stronger than book 1 so I may give that one a try, too. #ya

Y‘all, I really wanted this book to be good. I wanted it to be good representation of chronic pain. And there were occasionally good moments. But most of the disability rep, in the form of Cyra, was dreck and ableist. It makes me sad more than angry; it makes me tired. #MastersResearch

I know a lot of people said a lot of bad things about this book, but I loved it. It's basically a romance though, I thought I was buying fantasy... But yeah, this is a space romance. I finished last night and I'm still not sure I know what the plot is, but I don't even care. Went out and got book 2 today. Fun and easy to read.

This book had a slow start for me. It almost didn't keep my interest enough that I almost DNF it. But I continued reading. I didn't really get into it until probably about halfway through. Then it started to pick up and get really good. It was hard to put down after that point. I liked it enough in the end that I do want to read the 2nd book to see where the story goes. So there's that at least. I'll give this book 3 1/2 stars.

Book mail 🖤 I got this in HB when it first came out but passed it onto a friend before I‘d had chance to finish it. Now it‘s out in PB (my preference) I‘ve repurchased it so I may finish it and get the sequel. Have you read this one? What were your thoughts? There was some crazy CRAZY controversy when it first came out that had me bashing my head against the wall. #yafantasy #fantasy #scififantasy #bookblogger #booklover #bookaddict #bibliophile

CaitlinR Yeah, reviewers thought the non-white characters were stereotyped. Haven‘t read it tho‘ 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @CaitlinR I hadn‘t even heard that! Guess there was even more controversy than I thought 😅💁🏼‍♀️ I found masses of preteens author shaming because of the way Ross used her Chronic Pain Disorder as influence for the magical abilities in the book. They said she didn‘t really have CPD and was just being ableist about self harm and all sorts. It was crazy! 7y

Carve the Mark has been on my TBR and has sat in my cart's save for later pile for a good minute now. So I was pretty stoked to see it and the 2nd book, signed first edition at that! 😁
