Female of the Species
Female of the Species | Mindy McGinnis
Edgar Award nominated author Mindy McGinnis delivers a dark and riveting contemporary YA novel that blends the unflinching honesty of Laurie Halse Anderson s Speak with the relentless pacing and alternating perspectives of Gone Girl. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn t feel bad about it.Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best the language of violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can t be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone. As their senior year unfolds, Alex s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever."

HAPPY NEW YEAR, LITTENS!
I know I barely post on here nowadays but that‘s gonna change this new year (hopefully 😅)!
In 2022, I read a total of 15 books (29 if you add a bunch of old short stories I read) It was a great reading year. I enjoyed almost every book, mostly very underground stuff. I can‘t wait to see what my reading journey will look like this year. Will make another post showing all the books in a grid 🥰

How are you guys??

Scochrane26 I‘m great this morning. Glad you posted. 2y

I‘m sorry I don‘t post on here as often as I‘d like. @WJCintron must have superpowers or something. Moving has been insane, but we‘re making a lot of progress and should be done soon😁
Anyways here is my best read of the month! (Very easy to choose because I could only read 2 books this month 🥰) Also I zoomed in on the bracket because my inner Virgo won‘t let the book covers look so small in the graph 🤠.

What‘s your read of the month?? 🥰

JudeCC LOL 😂 Yup! That inner Virgo of yours drives me insane. 🙄 3y

Fuck.
That‘s my review.
(In all seriousness, yes I agree that this is her best book. It passed Be Not Far From Me by a hair with that ending. This whole thing was like an A24 movie with a beautiful yet disturbing message against rape. Alex and Peekay are gonna stay with me for a while. I‘m not okay so please reach out if you‘ve read this because I need to spoiler rant like crazy despite the 451 character rule)

jeannasser Okay first of all, I got the feeling that Alex was gonna end up dying or paying the price but WHAT THE FUCK??? Also the only reason I‘m not giving this a full 10 is because the romance was rushed. Like WAY too rushed. They got together WAY too quickly. The whole piercing being ripped off thing destroyed me and also the part where Alex broiled the heck out of Sara‘s uncle. (What is it with Mindy McGinnis burning people?) overall I‘m not okay. 3y
BookDragonNotWorm This one made me ugly cry and broke me. 3y
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm I almost ugly cried and then I remembered “Alex wouldn‘t cry, so why should I?” 😭 but then that last Peekay chapter broke me. 3y
See All 7 Comments
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm the moment Branley told Jack through the phone, “oh yeah, we‘re gonna be fine.” I just freaking knew she was up to something and then after it all went to hell she just crawled up to Jack in the hospital like “I‘m sorry,” and I was soooooo angry I almost threw the book. I adore Peekay btw. Protect her at all costs. I‘m glad Alex ripped out Ray‘s nose and ear like that 3y
GondorGirl It's really difficult to say I love her books, because they're not very happy... but I think this is tied for my favorite Mindy book with 3y
BookDragonNotWorm No doubt she's not an author you read for warm fuzziest 😂 I agree with @GondorGirl on both counts - Heroine and this one are the best (and hardest hitting), but it's almost masochistic to say you love them 😁 3y
jeannasser @GondorGirl @BookDragonNotWorm I‘m gonna read Heroine next, then I‘m gonna do In A Handful of Dust (NADTD 2) and then I‘ll do A Madness So Discreet. Yeah her books are disturbingly sad and that‘s why I love them, because I always know I‘m gonna have my heart shattered one way or another 3y

This book was glorious and brutal and thrilling and heartbreaking and wrong. But SO right. You can always count on McGinnis to emotionally destroy you. If you need to cry, she‘s your girl. If you need a lift and some strength, she‘s your girl, too. Officially crushing on this author. (Is it wrong that I plan to use this book as my defense in court if I ever go on a rampage?)

CatGusMax I will be picking this up for a friend. It's exactly what I was looking for! Your post made me need it. 😄 4y

This is a hard one to review because it's REALLY dark and I don't think that I was in the right frame of mind for that right now. The premise of examining rape culture and sisterly vigilantism appealed to me more than how it was executed. I do think that Mindy McGinnis is a go-to for moodier, brutal YA though. (3⭐️)

(❗️TW for rape and animal cruelty)

ChasingOm Yeah, this one definitely had a dark side that I didn‘t expect. 5y
LaurenMags This has been on my TBR list. Maybe I'll push it a little further down on the list now. 5y

Yes, I am totally on a Mindy McGinnis kick. The Female of the Species is a contemporary realistic YA novel that alternates between the perspectives of three teenagers in a small town. Alex is the younger sister of Anna, notorious because of her rape and murder at the hands of a middle-aged local man found dead after he was questioned and released by the police. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Since her sister's death, Alex has tried to stay as invisible as possible, camouflaged by subtle clothes and a quiet demeanor, but now, during her senior year, she's made some new friends. Peekay (short for Preacher's Kid) volunteers with Alex at the local animal shelter; she's heartbroken because she was recently dumped by her boyfriend, Adam, the glamorous and gorgeous Brantley. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Jack--who hooks up regularly with Brantley, regardless of either's relationship status--has been aware of Alex since her sister's murder but really begins to focus on her when he learns that he'll lose the honor of being valedictorian to Alex . . . even though she doesn't want it. ⠀

McGinnis's navigation of these three characters is expert, ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod weaving through their disparate views of the best way to make it through the world without ever being jarring. She addresses here SO many issues, including class, rape culture, and violence. There's much joy in discovery here, so I hesitate to describe the plot other than to say that Anna's rape and murder four years before looms over everything. ⬇️ 5y
See All 8 Comments
UnabridgedPod While the book is amazing and kept my attention until the last page, I didn't love the resolution. In the last quarter or so of the novel, I kept thinking that I couldn't imagine a satisfying way to end the novel--it's too complex for easy answers--and unfortunately, I was right. Still, it's well worth the read and worth considering the questions that McGinnis poses throughout.⠀ 5y
That-Bookish-Hiker I love this author! Have you read her newest book? (edited) 5y

Three years ago Alex's sister was raped and murdered by a man who went free.

Three years ago Alex killed that man.

I expected this to hurt, but didn't expect it to hit me as hard as it did. Alex is a complicated heroine. Yes, she has violent tendencies. Yes, she flat out murdered a man. But I still spent the entire book cheering for her. In the end, I was left crying in the work bathroom, and this book will probably haunt me for a long time.

GondorGirl TW: animal violence, sexual assault, graphic physical violence, underage alcohol use. 5y
That-Bookish-Hiker I didn‘t expect this book to pack a punch either but after reading it, it became one of my fav books. I love this book and Alex character. 5y

This was good in some ways, weak in others. I liked Alex‘s take-no-prisoners reaction to sexism - like wow, this girl is intense. Too intense to be believable, sometimes. I also liked how the girls in the book and some of the boys got woke to everyday sexism and misogyny, and banded together against it. But ultimately I found the characters shallow, and the motivations unbelievable, especially Alex. Worth a read but not outstanding.

What an incredible book broaching subjects often talked about under the cover of darkness, or in a light that points fingers in all the wrong directions. This book is dark and scary but also so real because this is the world teenagers live in. To speak up or not speak up vigilante justice because technicalities or influence mean more than you as a person do.

This is between a pick and a so-so for me. It's a book about a girl that deals with men who are involved in rape culture. It was a bit slow to start out but the middle to end really takes off and is a good read. My opinion seems to be a little outside of the norm as this book is absolutely beloved on Litsy and GR.

This book was my first by Mindy McGinnis and I was blown away. I finished in 2 days! I like be how gritty and real the characters spoke and interacted, it wasn‘t forced or overwritten.
There were some pretty gruesome parts and at some points I had to physically put down the book to digest my feelings but isn‘t that what a great literary work does to you?
The message this books sends out about female sexualization at all ages is so important!

This is an intense YA book. I didn‘t expect all of the gruesome graphic details that are in this revenge thriller. It‘s well-written minus a few times it switched tenses inexplicably. The book will make you question justice and vengeance, but it‘s also a story with a powerful friendship storyline. The relationship between Claire and Alex is one of my favorite aspects of this book.

It‘s going to take a while to process. I would recommend it, with the obvious trigger warnings. There is also some animal death, in a farm setting.
