Lights on the Sea | Miquel Reina
22 posts | 14 read | 15 to read
In this riveting debut, prize-winning artist and filmmaker Miquel Reina maps out ambitious and fantastical new territory in a novel about a couple holding on for dear life as their world takes an extraordinary fall... On the highest point of an island, in a house clinging to the edge of a cliff, live Mary Rose and Harold Grapes, a retired couple still mourning the death of their son thirty-five years before. Weighed down by decades of grief and memories, the Grapeses have never moved past the tragedy. Then, on the eve of eviction from the most beautiful and dangerously unstable perch in the area, they're uprooted by a violent storm. The disbelieving Grapeses and their home take a free-fall slide into the whitecapped sea and float away. As the past that once moored them recedes and disappears, Mary Rose and Harold are delivered from decades of sorrow by the ebb and flow of the waves. Ahead of them, a light shimmers on the horizon, guiding them toward a revelatory and cathartic new engagement with life, and all its wonder. Wildly imaginative, deeply poignant, and entirely unexpected, Lights on the Sea sweeps readers away on a journey of fate, acceptance, redemption, and survival against the most rewarding of odds.

3 Stars • "Lights on the Sea" by Miquel Reina follows Mary Rose and Harold Grapes, an elderly couple forced to leave their cliffside home due to its instability. A storm causes their house to float away, leading them on a literal and metaphorical journey across the sea. This fantastical event becomes a backdrop for their emotional healing from the loss of their son.

6th and last book read #JubilantJuly Readathon @Andrew65
I have mixed feelings with this book because is magical realism which not always works for me. But then, I saw those beautiful lines and fell in love again with the story. If you liked the movie Up, maybe you will like this one. The story has some similar elements. This old couple must leave their home due to architectural problems. It was so hard for them. The house is full of memories⬇️

Gissy Where they will go? Next day, they open the door and the house is in the middle of the ocean. In this trip they will face their fears, solitude, feelings of guilt but also how to survive. Lovely couple! So, what would be important at the end? The house? The belongings? What? I should say that the story can be repetitive with only 242 pages. I don‘t think is for everyone but it worked for me❤️4⭐️

This was a surreal read that drew me in from the start. It was completely ridiculous & that's what made it so endearing. Prompting an odd sense of wonder, it built an ebb & flow of adventure while instilling a deeply satisfying enlightenment into the reader (aka me). Live your life to the fullest, realize your dreams, & don't let the upsets of your existence cause you to merely exist shrouded in regrets. Live, love, chase your joy!

“Unfortunately, this was not a documentary, and they couldn't change the channel. This was real.“

How often in our lives, especially over the course of the last 12+ months have we all had to come to terms with this exact realization? 😐

#MadonnaNovember #Frozen
When Mary Rose and Harold‘s young son died, they lost each other too. Then their cliff house fell into the sea during a storm. They floated on the ocean, and met a new people in a new #frozen land of icebergs and snow. In the process they finally grieved and found their way back to each other.

Cinfhen I love the starfish and glass paper weight 💙 5y

#JulyColdPlay #swallowedinthesea #speedofsound
Mary Rose & Harold Grapes‘ lives change drastically when their house is uprooted during a violent storm, causing it/them to fall into the ocean below. Their home is totally #swallowedinthesea.Eventually they end up among oceans of icebergs. The sound of the icebergs cracking, crashing, & crevices opening to swallow their home up is as if they are hearing & feeling the miracle ofthe #speedofsound.

Eggs Fascinating 💗👏🏻🤗 5y

Kudos for the creativity and themes of loss, rediscovery, dreams, friendship, and love. But the magic was marred by the last few chapters because they were repetitive - the story ended several times too many. It was still worth reading for the first 1/2 to 3/4 though.

The fragrance of this hyacinth is making me happy today. 🌸

Crazeedi ❤️❤️❤️hyacinths! Can't wait for mine to pop up in spring! 6y
Tamra @Crazeedi do you cut and bring in? I‘m always torn about cutting but I‘m getting better! Plus I used to never buy flowers thinking it‘s a luxury, but it‘s important to be nice to oneself too. 😚 6y

Cathythoughts I love hyacinths & this is a lovely pic 💜💜💜 6y
Crazeedi @Tamra yes I do, their fragrance is too hard to resist! So in they come! And sometimes they are blooming and we're getting a frost so I get them before they're zapped! 6y
Tamra @Crazeedi be sad to waste! 6y
Tamra @Cathythoughts thank you. They are in the grocery store here now - I hope you find some too. 6y

kspenmoll @Cinfhen Yes. The mystery was a “cozy” read- easy listening with very likable female detective pair who were great foils for each other! The other book was in the realm of magical realism & it felt magical. An elderly couple‘s home fell into the ocean in a storm & they sailed it it until it was grounded in icebergs. An adventure with a special ice berg living community begins. 6y
kspenmoll It‘s about love, buried grief, loss, friendship, isolation, community. I really enjoyed it. 6y
Cinfhen I read the blurb and it didn‘t appeal to me but your description makes it sound magical!!! 6y
kspenmoll @Cinfhen I know it did not get great reviews. I am a mood reader & It appeared at the right time for me to embrace it. 6y

Started this today - a retired couple refuses to leave their home on the edge of a cliff, and their house falls into the sea. They are forced to confront buried grief while navigating their trials on the ocean. Sounds like an interesting story with a little magical realism.
