In the vein of Big Little Lies and Reconstructing Amelia comes an emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain dead. And pregnant. A search for the truth. A lifetime of lies. In the small hours of the morning, Abi Knight is startled awake by the phone call no mother ever wants to get: her teenage daughter Olivia has fallen off a bridge. Not only is Olivia brain dead, shes pregnant and must remain on life support to keep her baby alive. And then Abi sees the angry bruises circling Olivias wrists. When the police unexpectedly rule Olivias fall an accident, Abi decides to find out what really happened that night. Heartbroken and grieving, she unravels the threads of her daughters life. Was Olivias fall an accident? Or something far more sinister? Christina McDonald weaves a suspenseful and heartwrenching tale of hidden relationships, devastating lies, and the power of a mothers love. With flashbacks of Olivias own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?

With characters that I really cared about and a storyline that felt like every parent's worse nightmare, this one really got to me, both as a mystery and on an emotional level.

Single mother Abi‘s life revolves around her 17 year old daughter Olivia. So when she gets a call in the night that Olivia has fallen from a bridge and is not only brain dead but pregnant, she knows she can‘t rest til she knows what happened. Told in alternative chapters from both Abi and Olivia‘s .POV, we get a picture of Olivia‘s quest to find her father, Abi‘s issues stemming from childhood abandonment and their relationship with each other.

This wasn‘t too bad but not the most memorable. I find it hard to believe that the mother wasn‘t able to realize what was happening with her daughter and having certain conversations with her. But then again, I guess parents can be oblivious to their children.

Thank you so very, very much @OriginalCyn620 and to all the other members who have sent me ‘Get Well‘ wishes. Even when this story was breaking my heart, I couldn't put it down!
Really well written!
This author has a great feel for her characters, especially teens.
Don't worry, it's not just a sad story, it's a strong murder mystery,too!

I enjoyed this one enough that I wanted to know what happened next and what really happened to Olivia. That being said it did feel a bit predictable by the end. I kept waiting for some big twist to happen. The book does however wrap everything up well by the end. It felt nice that though the characters suffered a devastating loss that by the end they have a glimmer of new good things happening in the future.

I liked this book as a mystery but i did not care for the story. It was too YA for me. I did guess pretty early on the "who did it" but there were quite a few parts that tried to throw me off the right track.

This was a good, but somewhat predictable story with a great ending. The story wasn‘t brilliant, but it was compelling and well written. The characters were relatable and the relationships rang true. Then there was the ending..... oh the ending. It was written with such tenderness and provided a glimpse into the profound love between a mother and daughter. I was in tears 😭

megnews I‘m not new to this genre but I haven‘t read a mystery in a long time. They were getting too formulaic for me. I really tend to stick to history with a little memoir thrown in and I‘m pretty happy with that. Still, I appreciated pushing beyond those limits and enjoyed this book and really enjoyed reading with the group. (edited) 5y
OriginalCyn620 Not new to the genre but I loved this one! The author did a great job of casting doubt over many characters so that it kept me guessing. There‘s not really an aspect that I didn‘t enjoy. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I like mysteries, but I like that this one was a little different than most I've read in that it also had the additional stories of friendship, love, and family. The stories of Derek, Abbi & Anthony, and Abbi's relationship with her sister made it a more well-rounded story than mysterious sometimes are. 5y
See All 7 Comments
megnews I agree with @CoffeeNBooks. I find many mysteries might have a romance component for added tension to the story but you don‘t often see these types of familial, loving relationships. I enjoyed that aspect for sure and really hurt for Abbi losing Olivia. 5y
Hooked_on_books I love mysteries. I liked this one but there were aspects that bothered me. I didn‘t like that she didn‘t question the note pushed under her door. She just believed it without question and I thought that‘s was unrealistic since she didn‘t know where it came from. Also, the medical stuff at the end had some major errors that took me out of the story a bit. 5y
thereadingowlvina I love murder mysteries but I usually read historical murder mysteries. Thought I'd give this one a try and I'm glad I did! This book exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be reading this author's other books 😊 5y
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina I've only been listening to psychological thrillers/suspense novels for a couple of years. This is one of the best ones. I saw a review that said it was too much like a Hallmark Channel movie, I disagree since I love Hallmark movies. I thought it was a nice change to actually care about the characters in the end. 5y

EH2018 I though Tyler, then a couple others, but I thought Tyler could have been the stalker because of how upset he was about his parents breakup. I did not guess how it all went down though 5y
Hooked_on_books I thought the author did a good job of setting up a lot of potential suspects. I wasn‘t surprised that it was Tyler, but I wouldn‘t have been surprised if it was a number of people. 5y
thereadingowlvina I did not suspect Tyler at all! I thought it would be Olivia's dad or/and his daughter. That's why I enjoyed the twist in this book! 5y
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @EH2018 @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina my number one suspect was Madison, number to Gavin. Tyler came in at number three. I agree the author did an excellent job, keeping us in suspense. 5y
