Devouring Gray
Devouring Gray | Christine Lynn Herman
Branches and stones, daggers and bones, They locked the Beast away. After the death of her sister, seventeen-year-old Violet Saunders finds herself dragged to Four Paths, New York. Violet may be a newcomer, but she soon learns her mother isn't: They belong to one of the revered founding families of the town, where stone bells hang above every doorway and danger lurks in the depths of the woods. Justin Hawthorne's bloodline has protected Four Paths for generations from the Gray-a lifeless dimension that imprisons a brutal monster. After Justin fails to inherit his family's powers, his mother is determined to keep this humiliation a secret. But Justin can't let go of the future he was promised and the town he swore to protect. Ever since Harper Carlisle lost her hand to an accident that left her stranded in the Gray for days, she has vowed revenge on the person who abandoned her: Justin Hawthorne. There are ripples of dissent in Four Paths, and Harper seizes an opportunity to take down the Hawthornes and change her destiny-to what extent, even she doesn't yet know. The Gray is growing stronger every day, and its victims are piling up. When Violet accidentally unleashes the monster, all three must band together with the other Founders to unearth the dark truths behind their families' abilities? before the Gray devours them all.

I loved this one! Unlike some YA paranormal books, romance was kept to a minimum so the plot could take center stage. I definitely want to read the next one. 5🌟

I think this series has a lot of promise. The magic, creepy woods and creepy town are ingredients for a fun, spooky supernatural thriller; however, the relationship drama bogged it down. It wasn't instalove which was refreshing... it just went on and on and the Beast kind of got left in the woods checking his watch, wondering when he got to go on. I hope that since some of the FEELINGS got figured out, the 2nd book will be a bit more magical...

So far, so good on this one. I'm pleasantly surprised by how creepy and engrossing it is so far....I love the witchy feel and the deep, dark wood vibe. Let's hope it keeps up!

Interesting world building, the characters weren‘t fully fleshed out in some cases, but it is a debut novel. I will definitely read the second one because I want to learn more about how the magic works!

This one was a lot of fun. Very atmospheric, some memorable characters, an intriguing premise. The comps are pretty spot-on, though it‘s not as epic as the Raven Boys and the characters could all do with some more development. I also wanted more sexual tension, but I guess that‘s being saved for book 2, which I will definitely read at some point. 7/10 ⭐️

A solid 3.5. A+ world building that got bogged down a *bit* too much by soap opera romance...but this is YA. Points for 🏳️‍🌈 characters though. 🦴 🗡 🌲 🗿

So full disclosure...this is a little more #Riverdale soap opera than I would have liked so far but the world building is so promising. Hoping the end is climactic....esp since a Book 2 is coming.

3.3 🌟

Violet and her mom got back to her hometown after the death of her sibling in a car accident. The town is basically a jail for The Beast, who's extra powerful and lives in the Gray. Violet is one of the four founders' family that inherit latent power from her bloodline to keep The Beast imprisoned.

The book lacks the aura of suspense and mystery in it.

2️⃣⭐⭐
Not impressed 😔 I listened to the audiobook and listened along. I found the synopsis of the story intriguing. About a small town and 4 powerful families keeping the town safe from a monster. Each family has some kind of special power. I found the story lacked a lot of detail. I had a hard time picturing some or most of the scenes. I didnt find any one character that I thoroughly enjoyed or cared about. Maybe the cat 🤷‍♀️

BookNightOwl I just found myself waiting for something dramatic to happen but found myself reading a book that is so forgetful. 5y

Fave panel at #BKBF — dubbed “We Came to Slay”. Featured the tagged book‘s author (on the left), Hafsah Faisal (middle) & Kat Cho (right). I got to meet all three - so kind & sweet! Can‘t wait to dig in to all 3 books - starting first with the tagged bc it seems like the perfect #Halloween book!

A solid, engaging story with intriguing supernatural elements, an evocative, creepy atmosphere, and authentic characters whose fates I cared about right off the bat. I was hooked pretty much from the first page, and I‘m looking forward to reading the sequel next year!

This was a weird but really enjoyable read. I expected more horror elements based on the cover and vibe of the summary but it was more of a paranormal mystery. I enjoyed all the characters. They were all developed enough for me to differentiate them and their stories. The cult rebels is always a fun element to use though I did think their entire story was pretty predictable. Pretty strong debut title!

LorieL I have this checked out from the library. Started reading and couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll give it another try. ☺️ 5y

Ok I did really enjoy this, the writing was so good (especially for a debut) & the plot was pretty solid. I was sufficiently creepied out & there were some great twists I hadn't expected. However some of the character interactions were awkward and a couple times it hinted at a big reveal then turns out it was something petty (example: "I hate him, I will have revenge for what he did!" "What did he do?" "Gave me the silent treatment!".?).

7/10 ?

After a brief hiatus to sail to Panama and back, making a few stops along the way, I‘m glad to be back here on Litsy. I hope to catch up with everyone‘s posts soon.
I managed to finish this audiobook on my trip, but it left me feeling meh. Intriguing story, but cluttered with too much typical YA drama. The writing was a bit awkward in places, and the book would have benefited from some stronger editing overall.

Completely devoured this book! It had a fantastic atmosphere and such wonderful ambience! Well crafted with great history and details. I am extremely curious to see where it goes in the next novel! The pacing was perfect and it just amped up until the climax. It reminded me so much of the raven boys and I totally loved that! I just fell into the story and the setting so easily!

For me, this book was definitely worth they hype. Great characters, mythology, and back story. It was very atmospheric. I enjoyed all 4 of our main characters (although Isaac may be my favorite). After that ending I can't wait to see where the author takes us with book two.

The characters in the book are interesting with the monster that kills those that stumble into the gray, is creepy. While I liked this book, it wasn‘t quite as engaging as I would have liked, which feels odd to write, because I really did like this book. I can‘t put my finger on it. It is a good read, but perhaps not a great read, but definitely a series I will continue and am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
