The Princess and the Goblin - Illustrated
The Princess and the Goblin - Illustrated | George MacDonald
TOLKIEN'S BOOKSHELF #5: THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN J.R.R. Tolkien was a great admirer of George MacDonald's fairy-stories. When his children were young, he used to read The Princess and the Goblin to them in the evenings, before they went to bed. In a 1938 letter to the Observer newspaper, Tolkien stated that some ideas in The Hobbit "derived from (previously digested) epic, mythology, and fairy-story-not, however, Victorian in authorship, as a rule to which George MacDonald is the chief exception." 'Tolkien knew well MacDonald's children's books The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie, both of which influenced Tolkien's depiction of goblins in The Hobbit, ' writes Douglas A. Anderson in Tales Before Tolkien: The Roots of Modern Fantasy. There are many reflections of MacDonald's 'Princess' books in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - not least, the goblins themselves. The wise, magical, prescient grandmother of the Princess Irene, seems to be a literary ancestor of Galadriel; centuries old and yet looking young, a queen, a healer, a beautiful, golden-haired woman associated with water. Princess Irene has a magic ring which is associated with invisibility, being linked to a semi-visible thread. This ring aids her in an escape from the Goblin Underground, much as The One Ring aids Bilbo. This edition contains the delicately beautiful illustrations of Jessie Willcox Smith, much-loved by generations of children to this very day.

Someone recently told me that George MacDonald was their favorite author.

I had never heard of him, so I decided to give this short audiobook a go.

Not for me.

I can see how fantasy readers would enjoy this, but I have come to the conclusion that fantasy will never be my jam.

I have had this book awhile on my kindle app, so I decided to pick a book off of the app and read it. I liked the book a lot. It was a classic. I am going to if I can find the second book in the series. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars.

Growing up I loved this movie!💕 I never realized it was a book until recently, and from 1872 no less!😮

A very cute story with very good manners☺️

AmandaBlaze I read The Princess and Curdie when I was a kid by MacDonald. I wonder if this was a series? 3y

For today‘s #LittensDressedInBlood prompt, a book that reminds you of Autumn, I chose this one.

Mom would always pack away any Halloween books/movies until fall came around, so the VHS was only out for a few months a year. My brother and I loved the movie and when I found a copy of the book, I couldn‘t believe it! I had no idea it was originally a book! I love both versions, despite some drastic differences and I need to find and read the sequel.

BeeMagical My cousin and I LOVED this movie as kids! I also had no idea it was a book first! 😍 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @BeeMagical It‘s definitely an underrated gem! I‘m glad to find a fellow fan! ❤️ 3y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @MidnightBookGirl Yay! I hope you enjoy both! 🥰 3y
paulfrankspencer @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm C.S. Lewis adored his writing and after Lewis' conversion considered him his spiritual father (having never met the man). Lewis even made MacDonald a character in The Great Divorce. MacDonald had obvious influence on The Chronicles of Narnia. 3y

I've never read George MacDonald & decided to join in for #ChildrensClassicRead2021 for January. I enjoyed it; lovely writing & there were a fair bit of surprising elements in it that spoke of Victorian social issues, perhaps? Miners, the labouring class, magic, the monarchy, faith, enchantment, & maybe even a bit of Darwinism. It comes as no surprise that MacDonald had an impact on writers like C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll, Tolkien. @TheBookHippie

TheBookHippie I seriously loved it!!!! Who knew?!?! It had so many layers! So glad you joined in! 4y
paulfrankspencer He's got some great short story fairytales. The fact that Lewis saw him as his spiritual father makes me much more interested in him than maybe I otherwise would be. 4y

I am familiar with some of George MacDonald's Christian fiction having read The Laird's Inheritance, so imagine my surprise when I learn he is considered the "Father of Fantasy." MacDonald can tell a great story no matter the genre. I would love to have this book adapted to film just to see Curdie's and the Goblin Queen's stamping battle. What a fun scene. Thanks @TheBookHippie for another great read. #ChildrensClassicsRead.

Butterfinger February's Just So Stories is one of my faves from my childhood. @TheBookHippie 4y

My only complaint with this book is that I didn‘t find it sooner, like when I was about ten or so. It was beautifully written, and as stated elsewhere, really set the foundation for Tolkien and Lewis. It was just so much fun to read, I felt ten years old again. AND, it had one of the least annoying princess in a story ever.

PatriciaU This is an old favorite of mine, and set me up for a lifetime of reading about goblins, ghosts, fairies, and other creatures. 6y
Autumnscribe @PatriciaU clearly you have excellent taste! I am looking forward to having my youngest read this, she is currently 9, the same age as the princess. I think she will love it. 6y

I had never even heard of this children‘s book until recently. I quite enjoyed it. It has some lovely things to say, especially about accepting things people say as being true for them and not judging harshly before learning more. Unfortunately, though, the goblins are made out to have no redeeming qualities whatsoever and their demise is horrible.

Finished this as part of my #11thhourreadathon
