Leadership in Turbulent Times | Doris Kearns Goodwin
36 posts | 24 read | 44 to read
In this culmination of five decades of acclaimed studies in presidential history, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin offers an illuminating exploration into the early development, growth, and exercise of leadership. Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? In Leadership in Turbulent Times, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closelyAbraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders. No common pattern describes the trajectory of leadership. Although set apart in background, abilities, and temperament, these men shared a fierce ambition and a deep-seated resilience that enabled them to surmount uncommon adversity. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. At moments of great challenge, they were able to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. This seminal work provides an accessible and essential road map for aspiring and established leaders in every field. In todays polarized world, these stories of authentic leadership in times of apprehension and fracture take on a singular urgency.

An interesting and in-depth look at 4 of the most important U.S. presidents ever to serve. This book works as a mini biography for each and a dissection of how they led the country.

my favorite part of the book is the epilogue— she profiles where each of the men were at the time of their death. 2 died in office following horrific wars, and the other two lived years beyond their presidencies and struggled with life post-presidency and finding their fit. I‘m reminded that we all struggle, we all succeed, we all fail, and even the greatest of leaders in the most turbulent of times is, at the end of the day, simply human.

My husband is so grumpy today, the only thing for it was to get out of the house and into the car. At first I didn‘t have a destination, but my sense of symmetry led me back to Gettysburg, where I came in January 2017. Then I cried in the visitor‘s center as I watched the little movie and thought about what might be lost with DJT in office. Today I listened to the oaths and speeches and cried again. Joe quoted Lincoln!

No one, IMHO, writes about presidents better than Doris Kearns Goodwin. Lincoln, Teddy & Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson are examined from childhood, through the tragedies of their lives, their leadership styles and failures, and their final ends. The audio was well done, with a different narrator for each president. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

RamsFan1963 I know it's unfair to compare Trump to these famous leaders, but when you look at their compassion, empathy, their ability to bring the nation together in trying times, their ability to work with friends and enemies, you can see in glaring detail what was missing in the 45th's administration. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites I absolutely love Doris Kearns Goodwin. I just watched her Master Class on leadership and it was so good! I mostly love when she talks baseball though. ❤️⚾️ 4y
RamsFan1963 @SheReadsAndWrites I hear she's quite knowledgeable about the game of baseball. I'm surprised she's never written a book about its history. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites She did write one called Wait Till Next Year that's a memoir about growing up in the 1950's as a Dodger fan. 😊💙 (edited) 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Ken Burns Baseball is my favorite documentary and she is also my favorite person interviewed in that. That's where I first saw her and started reading her stuff and listening to any interviews. She's awesome. 4y

Hey ,I get it .Some people can‘t spend a dime. But if you can , some indie bookstores are doing online or phone in orders with reduced cost on shipping or ,curbside pickups.Help keep our bookstores and record stores going so they will be there when we get past this.Andrew Cuomo and Gavin Newsom have shown an amazing level of leadership, that raised my interest in Goodwins book.

I finished this gem yesterday. Outstanding book. It covers Lincoln‘s decision to go forward with the Emancipation Proclamation, Teddy Roosevelt‘s intervention in the coal strike of 1902, FDR‘s immediate attack of the Great Depression upon taking office, and LBJ‘s obsession to pass civil rights legislation in the wake of Kennedy‘s assassination. It also touches on the childhoods and deaths of these men. History nerds, this one‘s for you! 📚💕

I have taken on too many books at once--yet again. My goal: 15 pp./day on this book and 30 pp./day on 'The Grapes of Wrath'. That should allow me to finish this by the time it needs to be returned to the library, and GoW by the next book group meeting.

...ah, yes. There was a time before running for office was “circuslike”. Anyone have a time machine? I‘d like to ask LBJ‘s team to please not do that. 😂

A fascinating look at the lives of four US presidents who led during turbulent times in our nation. I was especially interested in her take on Johnson since she worked closely with him. He certainly had a turbulent tenure but I believe quotes like this one, about civil rights, show the kind of man he was. “Until we address unequal history, we cannot overcome unequal opportunity.” #aty2019

Has anyone read the tagged book? It is for my book club in February and it just looks so dry. I would rather read the true crime book we chose for our family book club - Blood & Ivy and it even comes with a map of the crime scene!

I knew LBJ knew his way around Congress, but I never appreciated the why of it until reading this book. The author does an excellent job finding commonalities across generations and situations, and I came away feeling like the book spoke directly to the steaming pile of poop that is 2018.

Goodwin looks at 4 presidents - Lincoln, both Roosevelts, and Johnson - and how their backgrounds, beliefs, and leadership impacted their presidencies and the course of the nation. For LBJ, she also talks about how the leadership he used with civil rights legislation was completely absent in dealing with Viet Nam. This was an exceptionally strong read. Goodwin took a historical perspective, but it was impossible not to draw parallels to today.

Mdargusch I‘m trying to get through this book right now. 🤞🏼 6y

Just spent 90 minutes listening to Doris Kearns Goodwin discuss four types of presidential leadership: visionary, transformational, crisis and turnaround. (Spoiler alert: the current occupant of the White House possesses none of them.) She was wonderful--so well spoken, engaging...and very funny!

Finished reading the new Doris Kearns Goodwin in my in-laws picturesque backyard. I loved this book. She compares the leadership style of four presidents - Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, and Lyndon Johnson. She doesn‘t shy away from the negative qualities in their personalities, but I came away feeling awfully inspired - and with a massive brain crush on FDR. 🤓 Out in Sept!

PNWBookseller85 It was also immensely comforting to read about how these presidents got us through the dark times and lead us towards progress. I wonder who our next hero will be? (Elizabeth Warren?!?) 6y

Book ordering for the library system from home today and came across this release in September. I didn‘t realize she had a new Book coming out! Putting this on my radar right now (and buying a copy for the library!).
