The Nine
The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court | Jeffrey Toobin
Acclaimed journalist Jeffrey Toobin takes us into the chambers of the most importantand secretlegal body in our country, the Supreme Court, revealing the complex dynamic among the nine people who decide the law of the land. An institution at a moment of transition, the Court now stands at a crucial point, with major changes in store on such issues as abortion, civil rights, and church-state relations. Based on exclusive interviews with the justices and with a keen sense of the Courts history and the trajectory of its future, Jeffrey Toobin creates in The Nine a riveting story of one of the most important forces in American life today.

I wanted to know more about the Supreme Court, but while this book claims to provide insight and be a history, it has no citations and provides almost no context for what for author describes. 1/5 stars

Hestapleton Nothing in the back of the book? I‘ve read one other Toobin with thorough sources, just not footnoted. 3y
bookishbitch That sounds disappointing. 3y
iread2much @Hestapleton it‘s possible that there were, but I don‘t personally find a list of references without citations to be very helpful. I want to know where he‘s getting his information and when he makes big claims about history and historical events/social movements, I don‘t want to just take his word for them. Maybe if I lived through that era it would be different 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

iread2much @bookishbitch it was! Even the Brian Kilmeade book has citations; really really really bad citations, but at least it tried. This book even uses quotes but didn‘t tell me what it was quoting from. 3y
bookishbitch @iread2much Sounds like lazy research. 3y
iread2much @bookishbitch I agree. 😠 he claims that abortion is THE driving force behind conservative take overs of the legal system, which I can totally believe. However, since he provides no real context and no citations, I can‘t understand how he came to that conclusion and I don‘t know if it‘s true. 3y

I really hope this was an accident because I truly enjoy his writing.

Tonton I like his writing, too. Unfortunate error of judgement it seems;there‘s a time and place... 4y
Hestapleton @Tonton why I always triple check that my camera is off before I start a meeting! #pajamalife 4y

My first nonfiction book of the year was a revealing and surprising to me explanation of the process of becoming a Supreme Court Justice. Many notable Court decisions were discussed, giving you the feeling of being behind the scenes. My favorite part was feeling that although they reside in an “ivory tower”, the Justices have a life outside of the Court too. Published in 2007, so ends with Alito. #nonfiction2019

“A month after the argument in Grutter, on an aircraft carrier off the coast of San Diego, the president addressed a cheering crowd underneath a banner that read “Mission Accomplished. But almost from that moment, the fortunes of the American occupation turned.” #musicalnewyear #carryingthebanner

Just read this line and couldn‘t resist getting in one more for the challenge! Lots of fun. Thank you for stimulating my brain!

Cinfhen I love when those coincidences occur!! Thanks for sharing and playing along 6y

Interesting point Toobin acknowledges in Supreme Court History, and it's current make up. Already enjoying this book.
