Story Hour | Thrity N Umrigar
25 posts | 35 read | 26 to read
"An experienced psychologist, Maggie carefully maintains emotional distance from her patients. But when she meets a young Indian woman who tried to kill herself, her professional detachment disintegrates. Cut off from her family in India, Lakshmi is desperately lonely and trapped in a loveless marriage to a domineering man who limits her world to their small restaurant and grocery store. Moved by her plight, Maggie treats Lakshmi in her home office for free, quickly realizing that the despondent woman doesn't need a shrink; she needs a friend. Determined to empower Lakshmi as a woman who feels valued in her own right, Maggie abandons protocol, and soon doctor and patient have become close friends. But while their relationship is deeply affectionate, it is also warped by conflicting expectations. When Maggie and Lakshmi open up and share long-buried secrets, the revelations will jeopardize their close bond, shake their faith in each other, and force them to confront painful choices."--

This is an astounding book about the intersecting lives of two women from different cultures and life experiences. It‘s a tour de force or race, gender, cultural, caste issues. Simply breathtaking!

Going to give this a go, though I could probably add to this list least likely to answer a Q&A, just something about putting it in writing....

#anditsaugust day 26: #southasianwriters
Sadly I have only a small collection of South Asian writers on my shelves. I don't even own any books by one of my favourite writers Tahmima Anam - shall have to see if Book Outlet has any!
(If you think this post was just an excuse to go browse the Book Outlet site, you, well, you may just be right)

LukkiAnn Great collection ❤️❤️❤️ 7y
BookishMe Have you read Amitav Ghosh? That's amazing but any of his books are intensely moving! 7y

Loved it!! It's one of those books that makes me want to scream things at the characters, like scary movies do for other people.

Loved the way the author wove the 2 main characters' stories together and dove into the complexities of a therapeutic relationship. Couldn't wait to find out what happened to them!

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday. Lakshmi is an Indian immigrant who meets Maggie, an African-American psychologist, after trying to kill herself. The women become close, crossing the boundaries of a patient/therapist relationship, and then Everything falls apart.

It took me a little while to get into this book, mainly because I had problems liking either of the two main women characters. I did love the slow reveal over both of their stories and the focus on loneliness (in a relationship, in being an immigrant in a foreign land).
Plot: After Lakshimi attempts suicide, Maggie becomes her therapist. She finds herself drawn to Lakshimi and a friendship soon develops.

I found it a leeetle bit slow at first, but ended up staying up way too late tonight in order to finish it, wanting to know how it ends. I love the ending. Good night, Littens, and Happy Reading!

#booktober Day 3: Text-only covers. So the Persephone book is a bit of a cheat as all Persephones have that grey cover design. And technically When Breath Becomes Air has a feather on it!

I wanted to highlight #textonlycovers as a lot of new releases seem to adopt this style (like the new Zadie Smith & Jonathan Safran Foer).

What text-only covers have you admired recently?

Lizpixie I'm really trying to find a copy of the hot pink & green velvety covered Nick Harkaways The Gone Away World. The only ones I've seen are the plainer covers but that one, it may only be text but the colours and texture totally make it gorgeous. 8y
read_diverse_books Nice collection! I only have a few, but I realized today how much I like when books are simple and clean, like text-only covers. 8y
Marchpane I remember reading somewhere that cover designs were hugely affected by the shift to online sales because suddenly they had to be eye-catching and recognisable in thumbnail size. Bright colours and large fonts make a lot of sense. 8y
gaming4justice Fantastic picture! I love the different uses of text to create compelling covers. Covers don't make it or break it for me but I love a good cover. 8y
Smangela I love Jojo Moyes covers :) 8y

Where to begin🤔 I really couldn't put this book down. I sometimes got irritated with Maggie's to and fro way of thinking, but it was only because I felt I related to her on that level. I also thought the ending was lacking and abrupt. Aside from that, I still very much liked the story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

... the husband says, "what are you crying for?" His arms are tight around me, and in the middle of my tears, I feel a tickle. Down there. // this book just got a little more interesting.
