A Night to Surrender
A Night to Surrender | Tessa Dare
Welcome to Spindle Cove, where the ladies with delicate constitutions come for the sea air, and men in their prime are . . . nowhere to be found. Or are they? Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there. Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesnt belong here. So far as he can tell, theres nothing in this place but spinsters . . . and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. Its a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Fincha woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Brams makeshift army. Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battlebut who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

Continuing on my Georgian romance kick, i do like Tessa Dare‘s books. This one was a fun one.

And now onto a new romance author, Elizabeth Hoyt.

Maybe the Bridgertons should come with a warning: reading or watching this series can cause a reader to slip down the Georgian romance slope.”

Not my favorite, but it was fine. I liked Susanna well enough at the start, but Bram didn't strike me as likable until far later. This made it hard to buy that there was genuine affection between them & not just lust & infatuation. It wasn't until nearly 2/3 into the book, when they start working together, that I felt like I cared. However the other characters were interesting & I'd read about them, so hopefully they feature in future books!

I loved this book so much. I know that at some point I will be re-reading this one. It has some of the best dialogue ever. The relationship build up is perfect. For trope fans it has one of my faves, forced proximity and a bit of the ol‘ enemies to lovers.

4🌟I am at this point going out on a limb and Saying I am tjis authors bitch.

Spindle Cove on England's South coast is Susanna Finch's personal haven of utopia, but it's set to be taken over by English Militia men at the command of Victor Bramwell & the two are set to be at loggerheads for dominance of the village. It's going to be a lot of happily ever afters here.

I love the concept of Spindle Cove - a retreat for women who don‘t fit in to society for one reason or another. Susannah is a great heroine, smart and feisty and caring with a sad past. Bram is broken and bull-headed and great. I love the development of the secondary characters and of Spindle Cove itself. Can‘t wait to read the rest of the series!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2

When Susanna cocked her pistol, the others followed suit. The chorus of clicks raced down Bram‘s spine.
“I find this scene wildly arousing,” Colin murmured, echoing Bram‘s own thoughts. “Is that wrong?”
“If it is, I can promise you company in hell.”
His cousin made an amused sound. “And you thought we have nothing in common.”
Susanna leveled her pistol and took aim. “One... Two...”
Crack.”

Loved it. It hit all the things I like in a romance and the writing didn't take me out of the story. Definitely moving on to the next in this series.

Heard so much praise for this series but finding it rough going. Maybe Dare just isn‘t my cup of 🍵 If the style isn‘t distinctive, even an interesting innovation of the standard romance plot doesn‘t keep my interest 🤷🏽‍♀️

This was absolutely just super fantastic. Ms. Dare has quietly risen to the height of my esteem as an writer of modern women in the regency era. Her Spindle Cove spinsters were perfect to spend my Sunday with, audiocrafting. Anyone who likes regency romance needs Ms. Dare on their list!!

elizabethlk The Spindle Cove series is so wonderful. 7y
theresidentromantic @elizabethlk It really is!! The castles were ok, I read two of them, but nothing compared to The Duchess Deal. This definitely did though! 7y
elizabethlk Castles were fun but very fairy tale-esque. All the Spindle Cove books were an absolute delight though. I'm hoping to start the Duchess Deal tonight. 7y
theresidentromantic @Elizabethlk Good to know you have the same opinion!! 7y
Daughter-of-words I love her! I like to think of her books as the rom-coms of historical romance. Her heroines are always hilarious 7y

This one's good, but not as great as the other Tessa Dare books I've read so far. Something wasn't quite the same - lack of witty repartee maybe? A lot of heart and chemistry though, and the heroine was enjoyable, so still a light, entertaining #romantsy read on the whole! ❤️

While this book is a pick and I will definitely read the next one, it wasn't without problems. The hero spends about a quarter of the book trying to prove he's smarter/stronger/better than the heroine which is irritating but I liked the heroine and her reactions enough to enjoy the book. #romantsy

Let me first say that Tessa Dare is one of my absolute favorite romance authors. However, I didn't love this book as I have loved so many of her others. While this is a cute read, it seems to be lacking in her usual witty dialogue and humorous story elements. Perhaps after reading the Castles Ever After series, I've just developed unreasonably high expectations of all Tessa Dare novels!

Still feeling super yucky. Still have a ton of work-work to do. But apparently it wasn't a break from romance novels that I needed - just a break from those not written by Tessa Dare. Loving this one (yes, I am reading the series out of order - it's killing me, but it just happened). Maybe just another 30 minutes, then I'll go sit at my desk and do real work...

#romantsy

GypsyKat I hope you feel better soon! And I've noticed a lot of Littens reading Tessa Dare books. I've never read anything by her, I'm thinking that maybe I should. 7y
DGRachel @GypsyKat If you like Regency romance novels, you absolutely should. She doesn't use weird euphemisms in her steamy scenes, her heroines are strong, smart women, the banter between characters is great, and I literally laugh out loud multiple times in each book. 7y
GypsyKat @DGRachel I do sometimes. Do you have any specific suggestions on a book or series to start with? 7y
DGRachel For Tessa? This is the first in the Spindle Cove series. But my first Tessa novel was her most recent and that has even better reviews overall than this one, so I'd really recommend that one. It's the first in a new series. 7y

This wavered between a pick and a so-so for me. I'll give it an extra half star for being the first book I've read since my reading slump happened. The MC is independent and intelligent which I liked, but overall I had a hard time connecting to the characters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

LauraBrook @Basia This is my first of hers as well, and so far I'm liking it as a starting point. Last year I asked for romance recs on LibraryThing, and this was one of them. Of course, it's the start to a series, but this is so enjoyable I'm happy to shell out 💰 and stay in this time and place. 8y

All three of us (including Pea in the chair behind my foot) are having a lazy afternoon. It's been raining all day, I'm finishing a quick load of laundry and watching Logan's Run for the first time, plus reading this surprisingly feminist romance novel. Yay for lazy weekdays!

LiteraryinPA Amazing way to spend a weekday! 8y
Suzze That blanket looks like a great idea. I have turned the heat up and I'm still freezing. This all-day rain is getting to me. 8y
LauraBrook @LiteraryinLititz It's the best way to spend any day, really. 😊 @Suzze It's so chilly with the rain. Plus I'm trying not to raise my temp all the time and maintain the heat. Well, that's the idea. I may have to break down and put my heated mattress pad on and up the temp by a couple of degrees. ☺️ 8y
ApoptyGina69 Another round of rain starts for us tomorrow in CA Sierra Foothills. 6 days predicted, but I have to work 4 of them. Got my tea and blankets all staged though! 🌧 8y
