Decluttering at the Speed of Life
Decluttering at the Speed of Life: Winning Your Never-Ending Battle with Stuff | Dana K. White
26 posts | 31 read | 24 to read
You dont have to live overwhelmed by stuffyou can get rid of clutter for good! While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, real women with real families who are constantly growing and changing simply cant purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is a home that is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress. In Decluttering at the Speed of Life, decluttering expert and author Dana White identifies the mind-sets and emotional challenges that make it difficult to declutter. Then, in her signature humorous approach, she provides workable solutions to break through these struggles and get clutter outfor good! But more than simply offering strategies, Dana dives deep into how to implement them, no matter the readers clutter level or emotional resistance to decluttering. She helps identify procrasticlutterthe stuff that will get done eventually so it doesnt seem urgentas well as how to make progress when theres no time to declutter. Sections of the book include Why You Need This Book (You Know Why) Your Unique Home Decluttering in the Midst of Real Life Change Your Mind, Change Your Home Breaking Through Your Decluttering Delusions Working It Out Room by Room Helping Others Declutter Real Life Goes On (and On) As long as were living and breathing, new clutter will appear. The good news is that decluttering can get easier, become more natural, and require significantly fewer hours, less emotional bandwidth, and little to no sweat to keep going.

An interesting read filled with useful tips and advice on how to declutter rather than organise your house. Her two step rule is clever and did get me thinking. 3*

AlaSkaat I‘d like to say my OCD has made me an expert at organising and decluttering. But then I remember that I threw out my bed, tv and clothes in one of my decluttering projects, so I‘d say maybe not. Lol. This could be interesting 1w
nanuska_153 My partner would love if I read this, I do love stuff 😅 1w
kezzlou85 @AlaSkaat it's quite helpful. It's a couple of basic steps that you can use for things. 1w
kezzlou85 @nanuska_153 my husband is the hoarder but he still argues he might need it. 1w
nanuska_153 @kezzlou85 for me is not that I might need it,they are not useful things,it's the personal attachment that I have to them: toys, books, leaflets, pretty stones from a holiday...The root of the problem is: his parents are hoarders;my mom donated lots of my most precious childhood possessions (even while I was a child), she even donated a book that my granny bought me after she passed away because it was for smaller kids.We are both overcompensating😅 1w

Reading this book, I‘ve come to the conclusion that I‘m not actually ready to declutter (other than the baby stuff I‘ve already identified that really needs to be given away). I kept mentally protesting, “but I DO have room for more bookshelves!” My house doesn‘t have enough organizational stuff to take advantage of the space we have, and we don‘t use what we have well. I‘d prefer to make progress there before deciding my container is full.

Clare-Dragonfly But I really like her rules (and I think they‘re even better for when you‘re thinking of buying something) and her system. I may read this book again when I do want to declutter. And her writing style is fantastic and relatable, so I will be reading her other books. It looks like she did one on organizing so I‘ll go for that next! 1y
RaeLovesToRead I'm trying to get myself in the decluttering mindset. I really dislike living under an enormous pile of stuff, but getting rid of stuff is so against my nature that it makes me anxious. Really though, why am I keeping clothes I haven't worn in several years? 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @RaeLovesToRead If you haven‘t read this book, it might help! But borrow it from the library 😆 1y
RaeLovesToRead All I heard you say was, "buy a new book" just then ? 1y

I started this a while back before the audio came out but but finally finishing it now. It‘s just better hearing her tell it. I got to meet her a couple years ago, she‘s a very down to earth person with some straightforward and practical advice in this book. #BookSpinBingo

⭐⭐⭐⭐Hands down one of the better books I have read on decluttering and I have read quite a few. This practical guide is so helpful in getting you to identify why you clutter your environment up and how you need to go about decluttering it in a way that won't freak you out but will leave you happier and with a sense of accomplishment and inner peace as you gaze around at your decluttered surroundings. #declutteringatthespeedoflife #danakwhite

I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. White manages to give practical advice for dealing with clutter based on her own life experience, but offers it in a non- judgmental way. This book was actually fun to read and I‘m coming away with a strategy that will work to get clutter out of my house, just in time for the holidays.

Moony I like this book, too. It helps a lot 😎 4y

A reread for my move. I like the system by Dana K White

#NovelNovember #nonfiction #audiobook

julesG Can you recommend this? I'm a total hoarder and clutterer. Marie Kondo didn't help. 4y
Buechersuechtling Oh, that sounds interesting … *leaves to search my library‘s catalogue* 4y
Buechersuechtling Unlucky me, they don‘t have it. 😟 (You know, one of my plans for this year was to ask one of my friends to come over and help me sort out my wardrobe … Well, then came [that-which-name-we-don‘t-mention] – guess, how often I saw that friend … Or friends in general … 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y

I have read decluttering books b4 & gotten a few things out of Peter Walsh & miss Marie Kondo "Spark of Joy" & Julie Morgenstern but THIS is the 1st book that had a major shift. Keep whatever you want as long as it fits in the "container" THEN apply other wisdom from other decluttering masters made it actual possible to do. I'm so happy I stumbled on this little jem of a book. Even made the beginning chapters of annoying parts tolerable

I‘m only about halfway through this book and the library is going to grab back my ecopy tonight and then there‘s a four week wait to get it back. I‘ve been distracted with YA books, I guess. I‘m enjoying this book. It‘s written in a very casual style, like a blog. It‘s not about cleaning or organizing, but getting rid of the junk, whether you have five minutes or a long weekend to devote. It reinforces the “less is more” idea in a workable way.

Getting ready for tomorrow‘s Dewey‘s Readathon, a little later and more scattered than normal. But hey, it‘ll be fun regardless. I have a friend staying at my house this weekend, and she says she wants to participate too, but she reads less than I normally do, so we shall see.

I‘ll be posting here mostly, and not so much on my blog or Instagram.

Who else is joining in? #deweys #readathon

I almost gave a so-so rating because of her section on getting rid of books. Why do decluttering books think books on bookshelves are clutter? Seems like the first book to dispose of then would be that decluttering book. (Marie Kondo did this too.) I liked her idea of dedicating a few minutes a day to decluttering. I'm on the fence over the container system she promotes, as that just contains the mess. I just need my room of boxes to disappear!

Susanita I think they needed to declutter that synopsis a bit! The book sounds interesting though. My home could definitely use some decluttering TLC. 6y
Zelma And also Josh Becker. I reread his book Simplify often. Here is another of his plus his website is great. 6y

Morr_Books @Zelma Thanks so much for the recommendations! I need all the help I can get. At least my clutter is only in one room, but that is one room I can't use. 6y
Zelma @Morr_Books good luck! Peter Walsh is also fantastic and very practical. 6y
Pamwurtzler @Morr_Books I have a room like that. It makes me crazy. 6y

Nothing earth shattering, but great strategies to purge/declutter areas quickly. I thought the author was quite funny. I wished for a little more on spouses and kids, since it's all easier to row if we are all holding a paddle. I'm rounding this one up to 4/5 stars.
