I have read some of this series, and not others, so I decided I would start with the 1st one in the Kate Burkholder Series and read them all in order. This way, I figure I will not skip one.

4.25⭐
This is a well-established series with a lot of books in it…16 actually…plus short stories scattered throughout. I liked this first book enough that I‘ll be continuing the series despite the graphicness, because wow…it was rather intense at times. I found the incongruencies between the Amish community and the “English” community rather interesting and the author's research was rather evident here and in the police procedures.⬇️⬇️⬇️
Wow 😮 Riveting and completely compelling. This is the first in the series, although I think it stands on its own, even if you don‘t read the 16-book series in order. Chief Burkholder has a secret that was buried along with the dead body of the “Slaughterhouse Killer”; but now that similar murders are being committed, she has to face what happened when she was a young girl.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Hey all! I‘ve got the chance to read an arc from the Kate Burkholder series, but I‘ve only read the initial one. And yes, I know there are currently 13. 😳🤣 Is this a series that really should be read in order, or does it matter? Thanks!! 🤗🤗
Thanks to #BookSpin I finally got around to starting this series, and I‘m now a definite fan. Kate Burkholder as a young Chief of Police in a small Amish town in Ohio is a smart, sympathetic character with a dark secret in her past. This story, involving a possible cold case linked to her secret, is not for everyone as it involves torture, rape and murder. But it was Kate and her loyal squad who drew me in and will keep me coming back. 4.5/5⭐️
This was okay. More graphic and gory than I care for. I grew up near where this is set, so that was interesting. A number of inaccuracies were annoying, the biggest being that the town's police department wouldn't have jurisdiction over crimes happening out in the country outside of town - that would be the sheriff's territory.
Painters Mill, Ohio is a rural town where the Amish and English live side by side. Sixteen years ago, Kate Burkholder was one of the Amish, but now is an English police officer trying to catch a killer.
A young woman‘s body is found mutilated in a field, and this is only the start.
The thing I appreciated most about this book was the author‘s portrayal of the clash of cultures. I already can‘t wait to start the next book in this series!
Kate Burkholder!!! One of the few series I‘m almost completely up to date on. I only need to read the newest that came out this summer. I love this strong woman chief of police! She lets everyone know that she will not be pushed around. I also love how it takes place in an Amish community. We have several communities here in Indiana and we definitely enjoy their food!!!

This is another of my favorite series. These are crime thrillers set in Amish country in Ohio. Outsider just published July 2020 is the 19th book in the series.
Good story!!
A typical but entertaining crime story. It made for easy listening. A good sort of audio to multi-task to. 🎧
An Amish Murder movie is based on this book. The book is surprisingly more violent than I would have expected, having watched and enjoyed the movie first. The pace was quick and it is easy to fly through this novel. Would be a fine beach read if you are into serial killers and find yourself (like me) watching/enjoying Forensic Files more than what‘s probably considered to be healthy.
4⭐ I quite enjoyed 6; didn't really the ending, but the thought crossed my mind as the I got closer to the end. I really like Kate, as she wasn't a typical female cop. Characters were well written and felt realistic. Very good book; look forward to the other books in the series. #ebook #fiction #mystery #2020 #litsyatoz #listyatoz2020 #s #letters
I accidentally read the newest book in the Kate Burkholder series a few months ago without realizing it was part of a series. I enjoyed it so I decided to start at the beginning. This book was highly disturbing and graphic — not something I‘m used to when reading Amish fiction! But it kept me interested the whole time, even though I figured out the twist early. Worth reading if you like crime thrillers. 4⭐️
Small town life near an Amish village, a serial killer, an Amish woman turned cop with a traumatic past and secret and a twist I saw coming. A decent read but not nail biting that it kept me up at night reading and summer lasts were a bit slow.
Hopefully I can finish this one before the loan expires!
A reread, and I was so into it all over again that the ending surprised me. Again!! Chief Kate Burkholder is a great link between the Amish and English communities because she was raised in the Amish community. All of the murders are a total shock on the pages but they elevate the level of suspense while they‘re solving the case.
I never moved ahead with this series the first time I read for some reason, but I‘m ready to charge ahead with it now.
I enjoyed so me aspects to this but there were many things that bothered me. I probably won‘t read any more in the series.
Maybe #PsychoKiller is a little too strong, but Kate Burkholder has to figure out the identity of a very brutal murderer in this first in the series. Not for the squeamish - most in my mystery book discussion hated it - but I liked it, for the writing style and the level of suspense. Kate is also former Amish, so this adds to her as a character and gives her a different insight. #MarchIntoThe70s
TFW you pick up a book from a brand new (to me) series and get so drawn in to the story, the characters, and the fast-paced narrative that you finish it very quickly and dwell on the story for some time. That happened here, and I love it. Fair warning: bloody and violent. Thriller material. #recentlyread #nospoilers #femalepolicechief #Amishfiction ⚠️😱😳
Great first book in this series. Glad I was listening while driving back and forth to work. If I would have been reading it I would have only been able to do it with my husband beside me, all the lights in and some sort of weapon with me. I‘m a bit of a scaredy-cat and don‘t typically read thrillers. Recommend!
Really enjoying this thriller. Headed up by a former Amish turned police captain, the small town police department is overwhelmed by the case of a brutal serial killer. Characters are well written and I can‘t help but think this woman would be part of my tribe irl. A lot of fun on a cold night.
The first Kate Burkholder book, set in the Amish town of Painter‘s Mill, Ohio. When a serial killer appears to have risen from the dead to start killing again, Kate and her small police force try to discover who it is before he kills again. This was a phenomenal beginning to a series. Great characters, great action, surprise culprit! Looking forward to Book 2. This was Book 9 of #13book13weeks.
#24in48 @24in48 finished up this first book in the Kate Burkhalter Amish country series. Kate is former amish now Chief of Police in Painter‘s Mill, OH. There is a serial killer returned from 15 years ago and that brings up a secret from Kate‘s childhood that threatens her job and her family. Romance with flawed BCI Agent sent to help. Trigger for Horrible violence against women- if that disturbs you in a mystery skip this one 3.5⭐️
After reading A Gathering of Secrets, I knew this book would pull me out of a slight reading slump. It was a great easy read. I may just continue with the series! 🤗 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨4.5/5!
Love, love, love this series. Read them all and they were all 5 stars for me. The tagged book is the first one. Here is her book tour schedule for her latest book to be published. Get on the band wagon now as you are about to miss the boat! Series should be read in order!

Well, here is book number 4 in an attempt to get out of a small reading slump. I haven‘t been able to really get into anything. I feel like this may be the trick! I loved the ARC I received. Now to start the series from the beginning! 🤗 Happy Monday, Littens!
Oh my gosh!!! I won an autographed book from Linda Castillo!!! I had to go with the first in her series. I‘m so excited!!! I loved A Gathering of Secrets and I‘m looking forward to reading the entire series. Wow!!! Yayy!!! 🤗💕
I love crime stories and thrillers-I also really love Amish stories-so this was really a treat for me to read. I think having Kate as Chief of Police after being raised Amish is fun and made me more interested in her interactions with both Amish and English citizens of Painters Mill. Going into this, I supposed this would be a “lighter” thriller because of the Amish aspect, but NOPE. This is straight up gritty and dark and I loved it.
What a crazy beginning!
I wish I could stay up late to read but my eyes just want to close 🛏 Started this one earlier today after I finished The Fireman. I‘m thinking it might be a page turner.
Wow! What a great read. I am going to start buying the rest of the series, it was that good. This seems to be the year of new authors, Thank God for second hand book stores.
I highly recommend this book 👍👍📚📚❤❤
It wasn't bad though it did have an unnecessary sex scene that really didn't add to the story at all. The characters were interesting although a bit flat, but I'd be interested to check out book two and see where this goes. Fun little thriller.
Kate Burkholder is Chief of Police in a small town in Ohio, home to a large Amish community. Kate grew up Amish but chose to leave to live among the English. Now, a grisly Murder has occurred that requires her to visit her own past. First in the series - it‘s dark, it‘s gristly, it‘s at times graphic, but I liked this one and plan to continue the series. #MeAndAGun #FierceFeb
Last book I'll finish for #24in48.
Really enjoyed this first in a series mystery. Kate Burkholder, a small town police chief who grew up as a member of the Amish community, is a unique protagonist. I liked the perspective she brought to the investigation of the central case in this book. Looking forward to continuing on with this series.
I am really liking the book. It is really different from my usual Amish books.
Murder in Amish country keeps the kickass female chief of police, Kate Burkholder, very busy. But she has quite a few secrets that threaten her ability to catch the killer. While occasionally overwrought and sometimes predictable, this fast paced crime novel still manages to engage and entertain. #crime #fiction
The Kate Burkholder series written by Linda Castillo, grew up in Painters Mill Ohio and she is now the Chief of Police in that city. I love this series and the books pictured here are the first four books in the series. I listened to them on audio - I love the narrator! You should check them out. #authorwhosharesmyname #riotgrams
Sworn to Silence / Pray for Silence / Breaking Silence / Gone Missing
The setting in the Amish community is really original and the main character, Kate Burkholder, is very engaging. I haven't been much into police procedural/ murder mysteries lately but this reminds me of James Lee Burke, Laura Lippman and others I have enjoyed.
Found this thanks to Litsy! Great to discover a series that already has eight books in it ☺️
#photoadaynov16 Day 4 Set in Painter's Mill, Ohio, Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, is always on the track of the a murderer. Formerly Amish herself, she tries to be a bridge between the Amish residents and the "Englishers" of the small town. This series has a cozy feel because of the setting but the crimes are usually brutal and disturbing. I listen on audio, but I consider these unputdownable.
#setinasmalltown
Loved this book. Saw it on a lifetime movie and had to read the book. The characters and situation pulled me in immediately and I couldn't put it down. The author keeps the tension high and the pacing strong while balancing the cultural influences of the Amish and englisher groups. Very good mystery and great characters with good back stories. There is a great weaving of plot threads between back stories, and subplots that keep the pages turning.
Headed to the pool ( with my in laws) ... Trying to pick which book to start......
An easy, pleasing read and a great addition to this series. Love the characters in this series; I am a fan of the Amish storylines.
