Sworn to Silence | Linda Castillo
A killer is preying on sacred ground.... In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish. Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She's certain she's come to terms with her past--until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past--and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

4.25⭐
This is a well-established series with a lot of books in it…16 actually…plus short stories scattered throughout. I liked this first book enough that I‘ll be continuing the series despite the graphicness, because wow…it was rather intense at times. I found the incongruencies between the Amish community and the “English” community rather interesting and the author's research was rather evident here and in the police procedures.⬇️⬇️⬇️

AudiobookingWithLeah ⬆️⬆️⬆️In fact, at the end of the audiobook, there is an interview with the author where she speaks about her research. The narration by Kathleen McInerney was fantastic especially since she does multiple POVs. 8mo

Wow 😮 Riveting and completely compelling. This is the first in the series, although I think it stands on its own, even if you don‘t read the 16-book series in order. Chief Burkholder has a secret that was buried along with the dead body of the “Slaughterhouse Killer”; but now that similar murders are being committed, she has to face what happened when she was a young girl.

Hey all! I‘ve got the chance to read an arc from the Kate Burkholder series, but I‘ve only read the initial one. And yes, I know there are currently 13. 😳🤣 Is this a series that really should be read in order, or does it matter? Thanks!! 🤗🤗

Librarybelle I‘ve only read the first one myself, so I‘m not 100% sure. From what I have heard from those I know who read the series, there is character development as the series progresses, but I‘ve not heard if you need to read the books in order or if you can read out of order. This is a series I want to continue reading, though! 2y
robinb @Librarybelle Thanks, Jess. That only makes sense with the character development, doesn't it...and I hate to feel like I've missed some crucial stuff. I may need to go in order on this one. 2y
eanderson So I haven‘t read the last 2 but I feel like you can. There isn‘t many huge reveals I think. 2y

robinb @eanderson OK, thanks so much, Elisabeth. I might just jump in. 👍 2y
Bookzombie I can‘t think of anything that would require you to read them in order after the first book. Kate‘s backstory in the first book is referenced in others and the characters develop as they go on. Neither of those things should hinder your enjoyment. 🙂 2y
robinb @Bookzombie thanks Margie, I think I‘m going to give it a try. 😊 2y
JenlovesJT47 I‘ve read the last one before this first 😬 then I started with book 1. I‘m sure it would help to read them in order but it‘s not totally necessary. 2y

Thanks to #BookSpin I finally got around to starting this series, and I‘m now a definite fan. Kate Burkholder as a young Chief of Police in a small Amish town in Ohio is a smart, sympathetic character with a dark secret in her past. This story, involving a possible cold case linked to her secret, is not for everyone as it involves torture, rape and murder. But it was Kate and her loyal squad who drew me in and will keep me coming back. 4.5/5⭐️

Librarybelle I have to get back to this series! I liked this one too and really want to explore more. 3y
robinb @Librarybelle I hate that it got pushed off for so long. 😔 That‘s one great thing about #BookSpin, it‘s motivating me to go through my backlog of great books that have been overlooked. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I've really enjoyed this series a lot (although I've found a few weaker than others). I think Kate is such a relatable character and love how she has found a way to embrace her past/heritage even if that heritage isn't what she wants for her life. Castillo does such a great job of presenting the Amish as human instead of trying to make them all saints or all weirdos, and I really like that. Glad BookSpin made you read this one!! 😁 3y

This was okay. More graphic and gory than I care for. I grew up near where this is set, so that was interesting. A number of inaccuracies were annoying, the biggest being that the town's police department wouldn't have jurisdiction over crimes happening out in the country outside of town - that would be the sheriff's territory.

Painters Mill, Ohio is a rural town where the Amish and English live side by side. Sixteen years ago, Kate Burkholder was one of the Amish, but now is an English police officer trying to catch a killer.

A young woman‘s body is found mutilated in a field, and this is only the start.

The thing I appreciated most about this book was the author‘s portrayal of the clash of cultures. I already can‘t wait to start the next book in this series!

Jennaree3 I love her writing, too! The lifetime An Amish Murder was very good, and was based on this book 3y

Kate Burkholder!!! One of the few series I‘m almost completely up to date on. I only need to read the newest that came out this summer. I love this strong woman chief of police! She lets everyone know that she will not be pushed around. I also love how it takes place in an Amish community. We have several communities here in Indiana and we definitely enjoy their food!!!

An Amish Murder movie is based on this book. The book is surprisingly more violent than I would have expected, having watched and enjoyed the movie first. The pace was quick and it is easy to fly through this novel. Would be a fine beach read if you are into serial killers and find yourself (like me) watching/enjoying Forensic Files more than what‘s probably considered to be healthy.

I accidentally read the newest book in the Kate Burkholder series a few months ago without realizing it was part of a series. I enjoyed it so I decided to start at the beginning. This book was highly disturbing and graphic — not something I‘m used to when reading Amish fiction! But it kept me interested the whole time, even though I figured out the twist early. Worth reading if you like crime thrillers. 4⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I read this series last year and really enjoyed it. I felt like Castillo does a really good job presenting the Amish as humans, with human strengths and weaknesses, and both good and bad aspects about their community. 5y

A reread, and I was so into it all over again that the ending surprised me. Again!! Chief Kate Burkholder is a great link between the Amish and English communities because she was raised in the Amish community. All of the murders are a total shock on the pages but they elevate the level of suspense while they‘re solving the case.

I never moved ahead with this series the first time I read for some reason, but I‘m ready to charge ahead with it now.

Maybe #PsychoKiller is a little too strong, but Kate Burkholder has to figure out the identity of a very brutal murderer in this first in the series. Not for the squeamish - most in my mystery book discussion hated it - but I liked it, for the writing style and the level of suspense. Kate is also former Amish, so this adds to her as a character and gives her a different insight. #MarchIntoThe70s

TFW you pick up a book from a brand new (to me) series and get so drawn in to the story, the characters, and the fast-paced narrative that you finish it very quickly and dwell on the story for some time. That happened here, and I love it. Fair warning: bloody and violent. Thriller material. #recentlyread #nospoilers #femalepolicechief #Amishfiction ⚠️😱😳

I love crime stories and thrillers-I also really love Amish stories-so this was really a treat for me to read. I think having Kate as Chief of Police after being raised Amish is fun and made me more interested in her interactions with both Amish and English citizens of Painters Mill. Going into this, I supposed this would be a “lighter” thriller because of the Amish aspect, but NOPE. This is straight up gritty and dark and I loved it.

#photoadaynov16 Day 4 Set in Painter's Mill, Ohio, Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, is always on the track of the a murderer. Formerly Amish herself, she tries to be a bridge between the Amish residents and the "Englishers" of the small town. This series has a cozy feel because of the setting but the crimes are usually brutal and disturbing. I listen on audio, but I consider these unputdownable.

Loved this book. Saw it on a lifetime movie and had to read the book. The characters and situation pulled me in immediately and I couldn't put it down. The author keeps the tension high and the pacing strong while balancing the cultural influences of the Amish and englisher groups. Very good mystery and great characters with good back stories. There is a great weaving of plot threads between back stories, and subplots that keep the pages turning.
