Before and Again | Barbara Delinsky
38 posts | 30 read | 33 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of Blueprints and Sweet Salt Air, a brand-new novel about a woman in hiding finding the courage to face the world again. Mackenzie Cooper took her eyes off the road for just a moment but the resulting collision was enough to rob her not only of her beloved daughter but ultimately of her marriage, family, and friendsand thanks to the nonstop media coverage, even her privacy. Now she lives in Vermont under the name Maggie Reid, in a small house with her cats and dog. Shes thankful for the new friends shes madethough she cant risk telling them too much. And she takes satisfaction in working as a makeup artist at the luxurious local spa, helping clients hide the visible outward signs of their weariness, illnesses, and injuries. Covering up scars is a skill she has mastered. Her only goal is to stay under the radar and make it through her remaining probation. But she isnt the only one in this peaceful town with secrets. When a friends teenage son is thrust into the national spotlight, accused of hacking a powerful mans Twitter account, Maggie is torn between pulling away and protecting herselfor stepping into the glare to be at their side. As the stunning truth behind their case is slowly revealed, Maggies own carefully constructed story begins to unravel as well. She knows all too well that what we need from each other in this difficult world is comfort. But to provide it, sometimes we need to travel far outside our comfort zones. From a multimillion-selling master of womens fiction, Before and Again is a story of the relationships we find ourselves inmothers and daughters, spouses and siblings, true companions and fair-weather friendsand what kind of sacrifices we are or arent willing to make to sustain them through good times and bad.

#2022Book63
I liked the characters and the majority of the plot, but one of the major conflicts seemed kind of tossed in sporadically when it should have been the main storyline. The main character also kept regressing instead of growing until finally doing a complete 180 in the last chapter.

This is an odd pick for me. I liked the premise of the book and even how it reached its conclusion. I get that when someone is held accountable for the accidental death of their child much introspection is needed. However, MC‘s Maggie‘s thinking was often repetitive and sometimes pointless to her agony (her mom‘s muffins??). I think the story would have been better had fewer pages been spent inside Maggie‘s head.

I struggled through this book but made it to the end. Not much excitement and underwhelming plot with an ending you can guess. I skimmed over a lot of the pages as parts of the story just draaaaaagged on.

This one started off strong - Mackenzie Cooper crashes her car while messing with the GPS, killing her daughter. She moves to a new town, changes her name and makes a new life for herself where no one knows her past. I loved the premise of the book and the beginning, but near the middle/end it got a little sappy and unbelievable with the twists it took. Still an enjoyable read, but I was disappointed in the ending after the great start.

Bailing at 20%. I just don‘t care about the hacking scandal and I have a lot of other books to read. It‘s too bad, I was really looking forward to it.

This started a bit slow for me, but in the end it was a really moving story that kept me engaged. I love that Delinksy‘s characters are believable and no different than the average person. That‘s what makes their plight, reactions, and experiences so realistic and relatable.

5 ☆ Woop! Another fab novel from Barbara Delinsky! Mackenzie is involved in a crash taking her daughter‘s life, ending her marriage + friendships.
“To live through trauma and thrive? That was my goal”
She moves + rebuilds a new life finding meaning in a career that helps others feel good about themselves while building solid friendships; 4yrs later chaos erupts turning her life upside down again. A beautiful gripping story of loss, love + healing.

tracey38 This books sounds good. Also, love the carousel in the picture. 💜 6y
tammysue @tracey38 It was wonderful and Sweet Salt Air is a great book too.. a perfect summertime read. I bought the carousel piece at our local Hallmark store years ago, it also lights up and turns. I enjoyed that every year they released two more carousel animals to add to it. Was fun to collect them! 6y
tracey38 @whatshesreadingnow that's so neat that they would release a couple animals to add to it each year. I love Hallmark. 6y

I found this to be much too slow and therefore found it too long. I did enjoy the characters and the romance, but found it too detail heavy. Which is a shame, as I did love the characters and the overall themes. I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

BEFORE AND AGAIN by Barbara Delinsky

Ms. Delinsky's beautiful, pull-you-in writing style kept me reading as always.

BEFORE AND AGAIN always had some warmth coming from somewhere whether it was a character or situation.

This book deals with friendships, healing, emotional pain, and choices.

⭐️⭐️⭐️: Good not great. Maggie Reid suffers a traumatic accident that changes her life. She starts over in Vermont and becomes the person she thinks she should be. Nice one for the beach, but ultimately predictable and just ok.

Hmm. I found this to be like a bit of Jane Green romance & Mary Kubica's internal dialogues- the mix of which was very shallow & stuttering.

The main character Maggie Reid/Mackenzie Cooper, spent the whole book questioning herself, forced into a new life after she caused a traffic accident resulting in 2 deaths, one of them her daughter, is divorced by her husband, & put on probation. I could see this as a successful beach read.... out June 26th.

RaimeyGallant I see the problem, then. 6y
mrozzz Do you? @RaimeyGallant I‘m always so torn when reviewing an ARC but this just didn‘t quite add up to something that felt exciting/compelling/complete 😐 6y
RaimeyGallant I haven't read Jane Green but I have read Mary Kubica. 6y

mrozzz Aha! Yes. I‘ve read 1 by each and that was enough for me. @RaimeyGallant 6y
Bakingbookworm I‘m struggling big time with this book. It has good bones but it doesn‘t follow through. Main character is dull and silly, the issues sound good but overall it‘s long winded and dull, dull, dull. I feel I need to finish it because I got it as an ARC. 6y
mrozzz Yes... it was hard at points to want to continue... but I also had the ARC from Net Galley and wanted to finish so I could rate it properly. That said, if you don‘t like it now, it does not get better. @Bakingbookworm 6y
Bakingbookworm @mrozzz I got it from NG too. I‘m at 80% now and skimming through it. Wordy passages and not a strong enough story line. *sigh* 6y

3. Historical fiction.
