The Banker's Wife
The Banker's Wife | Cristina Alger
"Immersive, satisfying, tense--and timely: This is probably happening for real right now." -Lee Child On an early morning in November, a couple boards a private plane bound for Geneva, flying into a storm. Soon after, it simply drops off the radar, and its wreckage is later uncovered in the French Alps. Among the disappeared is Matthew Lerner, a banking insider at Swiss United, a powerful offshore banking company. His young widow, Annabel, is left grappling with the secrets he left behind, including an encrypted laptop and a shady client list. As she begins a desperate search for answers, she determines that Matthew's death was no accident, and that she is now in the crosshairs of his powerful enemies. Meanwhile, ambitious society journalist Marina Tourneau has finally landed at the top. Now that she's engaged to Grant Ellis, she will stop writing about powerful families and finally be a part of one. Her entry into the upper echelons of New York's York's social scene is more appealing than any article could ever be, but, after the death of her mentor, she agrees to dig into one more story. While looking into Swiss United, Marina uncovers information that implicates some of the most powerful men in the financial world, including some who are too close to home. The story could also be the answer to Annabel's heartbreaking search--if Marina chooses to publish it. The Banker's Wife is both a high-stakes thriller and an inside look at the personal lives in the intriguing world of finance, introducing Cristina Alger as a powerful new voice in the genre.

4¾⭐
This book surprised me with how much I actually liked it. Although, since it has two significant POVs it would‘ve been easier to keep them straight with a second narrator. It left me quite confused in the beginning until I got a handle on who was who. Overall, this was a wholly satisfying experience…and it was much needed one since I‘ve been in a bit of a slump lately.

A compelling, plot-driven financial thriller that kept me reading well past midnight! Loved the strong female protagonists who were central to the investigation and the story is set in the most gorgeous settings! Plus there are characters resembling real life politicians and families which I always love in my reading!! Great investigative journalism!

Holy crap. I devoured this book. Talk about a page-turning thriller. Intrigue and plot twists abound, and the momentum never lets up.

The subject matter was very timely. Involving stuff I can believe is happening right now in the world, unfortunately.

Alger definitely knows how to write.

Now to figure out what deftly-written thriller/suspense novel to read next. 🤔 Do you have a recommendation? Please share!

I finally went to downtown Houston to one of America‘s oldest mystery bookstores, Murder by the Book. I was in love. Hoping since everything has wound down at home, I can devour some books. I bought the tagged book and Final Girls by Riley Sager (who will actually be at the store in July!)

Desperately trying to fight off motion sickness so I can catch up on my reading while sitting on a train. I am always so jealous of those who can read in cars or trains.

Lola Oh, I feel your pain! I do a little better on a train, but a car is usually an absolute no go. And once I get that motion sick feeling, I can‘t shake it for hours. Sometimes I can sneak in a little here and there using my iPhone or Kindle but that doesn‘t happen very often 😒 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit Me too!! I start feeling sick after about 15 minutes. My son is the same way, but my daughter read from Houston to the Grand Canyon. I‘m happy for her, but it‘s SO UNFAIR😡!! 😁 6y
TheDaysGoBy I used to be able to, but one too many crazy commutes on the bus ruined that forever. Now I can‘t even be on my phone on the bus without getting a headache. It‘s the worst. 6y

If you had told me a bank thriller would be one of my favorite books of the year... I would have laughed in your face.

But hot damn. This was so good. I loved the shifting narratives between the women. I loved that I was never entirely sure who to trust for the entire book besides these women. Yes, give me all the bank thrillers.

Also, this mornings snuggle. 🙄 😍 that‘s my knee.

Today‘s Prompt: Bank

THE BANKER‘S WIFE addressed high profile and powerful men and women where money was the catalyst, and as the saying goes “the root of all evil.”

Perhaps it isn‘t a good idea to be a “banker‘s wife.” :)

If you enjoy secrets, intrigue, corruption, and love, you will enjoy THE BANKER'S WIFE. 4/5

Well what can I say, this has wealthy bankers, journalists, money, corruption and plenty of intrigue. You just don‘t know who to trust and it really keeps you guessing to the very end. I genuinely couldn‘t put it down and had a couple of late nights to finish it. A really good read

This was an easy, quick read perfect for summer. However, what I liked best about this story is that unlike most thrillers where the wife, girlfriend, daughter dies, all the protagonists survive. The Wife, and the reporter (both main characters and women) solve the crime AND live.

This is one of the best thrillers I‘ve read in a long time. It‘s reminiscent of Stieg Larsson and early John Grisham. Very page turner-y! Despite the title it not a typical domestic thriller. Pick it up and you‘ll likely be hooked from the first page.

I really enjoyed this book. Matthew works for a Swiss bank. One day his plane crashes and his wife is told that he is died with another woman. Was her husband cheating on her. Marina is a journalist who is finally at the top in her career when she starts looking to the Swiss bank and sees that there have been some dealing that are not on the up and up. Annabel and Marina notice someone following them. Who is it? Are what do they want?

The writing was quick and sharp, but I did feel that the characters could have been further developed and I think that Alger hides this weakness behind her clever plot. Written from both female perspectives, the characters needed to be more than they were, they simply lacked the depth needed. What I did like was that they were the perfect pairing—one was trying to uncover a secret while the other was trying to conceal information.
