A Christmas Carol, what can I say, it‘s the spirit 👻 of 🎄. The other 2 are Shakespeare‘s Twelfth Night (probably better to watch then 📖, & is a little dark in places but the mayhem and misunderstanding makes it entertaining to read / watch). The one that surprised me, Emma / Emmuska Orczy‘s Scarlet Pimpernel, I found this fun to read, it‘s a classic with a heroine who goes on a daring adventure.

2.5/5⭐ It was fun to read the precursor to masked heroes like Zorro, at least until the end. Any agency Marguerite had disappeared as she dissolved into a useless mess. The narrative slowed down w/ constant repetition of the stakes & thought processes of the various characters. The “twist“ plot device relied on the antisemitic stereotypes of Jews being dirty & inferior, which even the characters we're supposed to root for subscribed to. #roll100

This one is another book club pick, and so far my least favorite, despite it being my pick! It wasn‘t as fun as I was expecting, and has a REALLY slow start. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

#BookReport a little late - I did actually check some books off this week, including the tagged, which isn't even pictured!! I also finished Venetia, which was enjoyable but not my favorite Heyer just because there were SO MANY ANNOYING PEOPLE in poor Venetia's life! Oh my gosh! Just leave her ALONE! 😂 I also finished Mystery in the Mews (fun but not life-changing) and this random little hardcover I've owned for years - it was a bit odd but not ⬇

#WeeklyForecast - Well, it would be nice to actually check off some books 😂 but between work being crazy, Grandma being in the hospital (she had emergency surgery but is thankfully recovering very well, especially considering she's 91!!), and me having an unfortunate addiction to Stardew Valley, I'm not super optimistic! 😆 Should be finishing Venetia today. I think I'm going to read Murder in the Mews next, then The Scarlet Pimpernel (which I ⬇

Hey #GroupV ! I'm excited about reading some classics this round as I've really been trying to delve more into them this year! Here are several from my TBR that I don't THINK are too chunky (I don't own all of them so for some I'm going off of GR page counts lol) Let me know if any of these appeal to you, or any of them you definitely don't want to read, or you've already read, etc. And I'm interested to see what books you all have on your radars!

The premise was interesting with the mysterious English Scarlet Pimpernel rescuing French aristocrats in the midst of the French Revolution from the guillotine, but it ended up being surprisingly predictable. I also thought it could have been quite a bit shorter with the amount of repetitive material about how Marguerite was feeling at any given time.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Poor Marguerite! And Sir Percy as well. Though for the beginning of the story I thought him a heartless brute.

I have a question for @Librarybelle and @BarbaraBB about #readingEurope2020...

Can I count the tagged book toward Hungary since the author is Hungarian? Or would I count it as France since that's where it takes place? Orrr... Can I count it as both? 😁

The story was okay. The pacing seemed a bit weird as some of it was funny and I read quickly, while other parts dragged a bit and seemed repetitive and the ending was quite abrupt. The use of narration was also a bit odd at times. I did like the main characters, though. Overall it was pretty fun but I don‘t feel the need to read more in the series.

This month we‘re reading The Scarlet Pimpernel, so we‘re going to have a segment during the podcast about classics still on our TBR and if we feel pressure to read books that are considered “classics.” So, what about you? I mostly listened to this book using a library audio book (even though I‘ve owned a print copy forever) and I don‘t know why I waited so long! Even my kids got into the story.
