Masterpiece | Fiona Davis

In her latest captivating novel, nationally bestselling author Fiona Davis takes readers into the glamorous lost art school within Grand Central Terminal, where two very different women, fifty years apart, strive to make their mark on a world set against them. For the nearly nine million people who live in New York City, Grand Central Terminal is a crown jewel, a masterpiece of design. But for Clara Darden and Virginia Clay, it represents something quite different. For Clara, the terminal is the stepping stone to her future, which she is certain will shine as the brightly as the constellations on the main concourse ceiling. It is 1928, and twenty-five-year-old Clara is teaching at the lauded Grand Central School of Art. A talented illustrator, she has dreams of creating cover art for Vogue, but not even the prestige of the school can override the public's disdain for a "woman artist." Brash, fiery, confident, and single-minded--even while juggling the affections of two men, a wealthy would-be poet and a brilliant experimental painter--Clara is determined to achieve every creative success. But she and her bohemian friends have no idea that they'll soon be blindsided by the looming Great Depression, an insatiable monster with the power to destroy the entire art scene. And even poverty and hunger will do little to prepare Clara for the greater tragedy yet to come. Nearly fifty years later, in 1974, the terminal has declined almost as sharply as Virginia Clay's life. Full of grime and danger, from the smoke-blackened ceiling to the pickpockets and drug dealers who roam the floor, Grand Central is at the center of a fierce lawsuit: Is the once-grand building a landmark to be preserved, or a cancer to be demolished? For Virginia, it is simply her last resort. Recently divorced, she has just accepted a job in the information booth in order to support herself and her college-age daughter, Ruby. But when Virginia stumbles upon an abandoned art school within the terminal and discovers a striking watercolor hidden under the dust, her eyes are opened to the elegance beneath the decay. She embarks on a quest to find the artist of the unsigned masterpiece--an impassioned chase that draws Virginia not only into the battle to save Grand Central but deep into the mystery of Clara Darden, the famed 1920s illustrator who disappeared from history in 1931.

I enjoy how Davis embraces the two timelines together.

I discovered Davis‘ historical fiction a few years ago when I read The Chelsea Girls. She is quickly becoming a go-to author for me. I love her connection to a NYC landmark, her development of a story that surrounds that landmark, and her inclusion of historical facts and impressions of the building.

This one, which was a #LiteraryCrew read, looks at the old art school in the Grand Central terminal. So good! #12BooksOf2023 #June

I had no idea there was an art school in Grand Central Terminal! I like Davis‘s novels for bringing a NYC landmark to life - the setting becomes a character. Told in a dual timeline, Clara‘s story of the 1920s/1930s and Virginia‘s from the 1970s shows the passage of time on the building. Arts, women‘s rights, and historic preservation play a role in this. I was not too crazy over the two MC‘s, but the story itself really entertained me.

I loved the setting and the dual time lines, but the story fell a little flat for me. I liked how it ended up all coming together so probably a little better than just okay…say 3.5 stars ⭐️. Read for #literarycrew and it got me a #bookspinbingo in May, so there‘s that!

7. In the end, Clara and other artists got the credit they deserved. What did you think about the ending? ~from BookClubChat #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Sargar114 I liked it. The overall story was kind of average for me (May have been how I consumed it) but I was satisfied on how their timelines met up. 1y
Sargar114 …and of course Clara got the credit she deserved. 1y

6. How did Virginia change from the beginning of the novel until the end? What‘s next for her? ~from BookClubChat #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Sargar114 She started off as meek and still recovering from her divorce. We definitely saw her grow into herself and maybe who she should have always been but was being held back by societal norms. 1y
Sargar114 I find it interesting that her ex left her after her mastectomy and was part of the reason he left as she no longer conformed to societal beauty standards. Then Clara used that and saw the strength it created in her and wanted to celebrate that. 1y
Deblovestoread Yeah the ex, shallow much? I was glad for this part of the story. You could feel the pain and embarrassment that Virginia felt and to have Clara turn that around through Art was lovely. 1y

5. Let‘s discuss Virginia‘s drive to help save the Grand Central Terminal. Why do you think she made it such a personal mission? Do you agree with her that structures like that should be restored and preserved? ~from BookClubChat #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

julieclair I read this book last year, and didn‘t re-read it this month, but seeing these questions, I now realize that I‘ve forgotten a lot of the plot. 😳😕 But I do very much agree that buildings such as Grand Central Station should be saved and restored, and re-purposed if necessary. History is important. 1y
BethM I am in the same boat as @julieclair 1y
Sargar114 It seemed her working every day there she started to feel a personal connection with it. Virginia also seems to have a good attention to detail and the longer she was there, the more she saw and fell in love with. It also seemed to serve as a welcome distraction and once the other lawyer turned out to be married, I‘m sure it helped wanting to stick it to him. places should be preserved if they have historical context and can safely be done. 1y
Deblovestoread I understand progress due to the modern world we live in but our historical sites and buildings give everything depth and meaning. History is so important. In another life I would have been a history teacher. 1y

4. What was your initial suspicions on what happened to Clara? Were you surprised she was still alive? ~from BookClubChat #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

3. There‘s lots of descriptions of the art world. What stood out to you in those sections dedicated to crafting art? Do you have a favorite artist? ~from BookClubChat guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Sargar114 I experienced this one through audio, which may have been a disservice to the story, but I found myself missing some of the more technical descriptions. My favorite artist is Monet, fascinated at his ability to make something that seemingly looks like nothing into something. 1y
Deblovestoread I love learning about art history and the artists themselves. My fave is Van Gogh but a close second is Monet, really love that whole period. 1y

2. Let‘s discuss the ways that Clara and Virginia are very different. In what ways are they similar? Do you think they‘ll remain in contact? ~from BookClubChat guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Sargar114 Clara was much more sure of herself and much more willing to fight for what she felt she deserved. I think Virginia eventually got there, but it took her quite a bit longer. I don‘t know if they stay in touch but I imagine Clara feels a bit indebted now to Virginia so maybe. 1y
Deblovestoread I agree with @Sargar114 Virginia came to her confidence later in life then Clara did. I think they were very different people so may not have connected later. 1y

• TBR since March 9, 2018

The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis is a multi-narrative story set in two time periods: the 1920s and 1970s New York. The two story threads meet in Grand Central Station which is the ideal setting for bustling Art Deco New York meets down and out New York when homelessness was rife and the glamour had definitely worn off.

My first Fiona Davis novel finished for #LMPBC and #24B42020! I went in not knowing what to expect and found myself immersed in the lives of the two women in the book, especially Clara and her life in the 1920s.
