Silence: ... in the Age of Noise | Erling Kagge
27 posts | 30 read | 29 to read
THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'Quietly, wisely, Silence makes a case for dumbing the din of modern life, and learning to listen again' Robert Macfarlane What is silence? Where can it be found? Why is it more important than ever? Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge once spent fifty days walking solo across Antarctica, his radio broken. In this charming, quietly life-changing book - now an international publishing phenomenon - he takes us on a journey to unlock the power of silence. And he shows us how to find perfect silence in our daily lives, however busy we are.

This was my #DoubleSpin for May. Nothing profound or thought-provoking. It felt like it was just the author's rambling thoughts put on paper and then organized into a book.

This book is a low pick for me. It's a somewhat random collection of thoughts on silence, some insightful and others that were less interesting. Either way, it has definitely made me appreciate silence more.

This might be a stretch, but I'm using this book for prompt 30, “Meowth: Treasure“ for #gottacatchemall, since the theme of the book is that silence is to be treasured, and we all know that “Silence is golden“! @PuddleJumper

Librarybelle Wow! I‘ve not seen a book crossing book in a long time! So cool it is still a program! 8mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle BookCrossing is definitely not as active as it used to be but there are still a lot of dedicated BookCrossers. I always get a thrill when I get a journal entry for a book I released many years ago. 8mo

Librarybelle @kwmg40 That is really neat! I remember it being super popular 20 years ago. I had an account, and though I never released a book, I enjoyed reading the alerts of a book being released in my area. 8mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle I mostly do “controlled releases“ these days, with a group of BookCrossers around the world who send books to one another, but occasionally, I'll leave one “in the wild“. 😄 8mo

Just finished reading this thoughtful, powerful little book for the second time. It's a philosophical and practical exploration of the hunt for silence in everyday life, and how the discomfort of being alone and quiet can lead to deeper understanding of yourself and the way you think and react to things. It's comforting and calming to read, and a lovely edition to hold! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

#jamminjune #whisper Erling Kagge, the Norwegian adventurer and polymath, once spent fifty days walking solo in Antarctica with a broken radio. In this meditative, charming and surprisingly powerful book, he explores the power of silence and the importance of shutting out the world.

Bought this one at Powell‘s a few months ago when I was in Portland. It was one of those things where you‘re like “I‘m in an amazing bookstore so I should buy something I typically wouldn‘t just because I won‘t be back for a while plus it could end up being an amazing book...” Well I‘m halfway through and I‘m kind of mad I spent real money on it. The things our bookish hearts tell us while beaming in a bookstore... Beautiful cover though, right?!

Twocougs @cosmicv1bes I‘ll be honest, it wasn‘t super long, just 143pg. It was fantastic though 5y

This was a collection of essays - there were about 3 I really enjoyed - mainly the ones explaining psychology experiments. I got a bit bored of the author talking about his various experiences, just didn‘t work for me in this case.

I love silence. I need it to be creative, find peace and connect to my self. However this book didn't touch my soul & left me wanting the talk to stop so I could just experience the idea. Kagge comes across at times less than likeable and repeats some superficial tropes of self help vocabulary. For me the book didn't create a sense of calm, instil a fascination with silence or prick my mind to explore more - I was just glad it was over.

I really enjoyed this volume of short thoughts and essays. There is a lot to reflect on afterwards. I will probably add this to my nightstand with my stoic books to reread a few passages from time to time.

I love (and need daily!) reminders to be present and make space for stillness, and this is a very nice collection of those. Some chapters are simple observations, others deeper philosophical musings (and all are very short). I liked how he contemplated silence within us and silence around us and that he provided some practical tips for cultivating both.

A beautiful book of essays? meditations? on silence -- why we need it, how we find it in a world of constant noise, what drives us to seek it out and what drives us to push it away, and what it adds to our life. I loved reading this - it is a wonderful book to dip in and out of so that you can linger and dwell on the ideas.

Very nearly a five star review! I've noticed some reviewers berated it for not being a travelogue, or a self help guide. It's neither, nor does it profess to be. It's a meditation, a poetic meandering of thoughts on the subject of silence. It ended up four stars because he talks about meditation as a tool to silence thoughts, which is a bit of a misnomer. Also it's ever so slightly self indulgent, but that's being picky. Thoroughly enjoyable read

One of my @waterstones bargain sale treats. I've long since been aware of the importance of time in silence for me to function properly, so couldn't resist this little gem by Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge. Walking alone in Antarctica for 50 days lead him to create a poetic and meditative writing on the value of silent reflection 😍

A beautiful, peaceful book that focuses on taking the time to enjoy silence. It‘s less about noise—or the absence of noise—and more about inner peace and using silence to find it. I loved the short chapters that gave me a chance to pause and meditate on what I just read. And the ending was perfect! Highly recommended!

From the book Silence In The Age of Noise.
The experiment was for students to sit alone in silence for 15 minutes. No music, no reading, and no phones. This is one part of the experiment.
