After he crashes his plane into Lake Champlain, killing most of the passengers, Chip Linton moves into a new home with his wife and twin daughters and soon finds himself being haunted by the dead passengers, all while his wife wonders why the strange herbalist denizens of the town have taken such an interest in her daughters. Mehso-so

This was the definition of “meh” for me. It felt quite repetitive (yes, we know our pilot wasn‘t as successful as Sully Sullenberger, you don‘t have to tell us over and over) and it was a weird combination of possible ghost and witch/coven story. I enjoyed the ghostly bits but found the herbalists (witches?) annoying. And the ending was strange. 🌟🌟🌟 #scarathlon #skeletoncrew

It begins with a plane crash…and the pilot who is wasn‘t Sully Sullenberger…and becomes my 2011 ghost story about a haunted house, a grieving pilot, and a basement door sealed shut with 39 bolts. #spookyseason @Crownpublishing 👻👻👻👻👻

#aam

I wasn‘t sure about this at first because I‘m not a huge fan of 2nd person narration. However, the entire novel is not written in 2nd person and I just got sucked into the story. I kept telling Chip and Emily to just pack up the damn twins and run. I split this one between audio and print. This was my first Bohjalian novel and I will definitely check out his others. I have The Lioness on my shelf already.

Cinfhen I really enjoyed this one 👉🏽 2y
Bookzombie @Cinfhen I just put the audio on hold and hope it comes in sooner than they think, lol. I enjoyed the audio for The Night Strangers. 2y
Cinfhen I‘ve found that often it does come in sooner than expected 🤞🏽🤞🏽 2y

I fear I‘m in a bit of a rut this month! I tried the tagged book for #aam and it did not click with me - there seemed to be two competing storylines and I hated the end - however I also slogged my way through Death in Her Hands by Moshfegh, Notes from a Young Black Chef by Top Chef alum Onwuachi, and The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart and rated them bleh to middling. I feel like there should have been variety enough there … so maybe I‘m just in a mood?

Larkken The pic is from my just-finished outside yoga session. Here‘s hoping it cleanses my mood and get me ready for #camplitsy - I confess I‘ve been too scared to try How High We Go, given my reactions to other books lately! (edited) 3y

I don‘t write a lot of #ghoststories, 👻but when I do, invariably they have attics and super scary children. Have you read my novel, THE NIGHT STRANGERS? Happy #halloween! 🦇

One reason I like Chris Bohjalian is because each of his novels are always so different from one another. This one is sort of creepy. Aside from the climax of the story being a little over dramatic, I enjoyed this one, and the ending wasn‘t quite as predictable as you might think.

emmalouise1 This looks interesting. Adding to my list to read now :) 5y

Yes, I have a written a #Halloween ghost story: THE NIGHT STRANGERS. The origin? This basement door — nailed shut — in the 1898 Victorian I lived in for decades in #Vermont. It was published in 2011.

Ten years ago today Capt. 'Sully' Sullenberger landed his damaged Airbus on the Hudson, saving the crew and passengers. Ten years ago tonight, I started to write my novel about the pilot who wasn't Sully, THE NIGHT STRANGERS. My thanks to all flight crews. #MiracleOnTheHudson @Crownpublishing

These Halloween cookies were baked for me by my friend, the amazing journalist, Nanore Barsoumian, to celebrate the publication of my ghost story, THE NIGHT STRANGERS, in 2011. Each cookie has something to do with the novel.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s one of those signs that you should not open that door. 6y
Dolly @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yet you just know someone will 😲 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Dolly Right! I‘ve said that a few times over real news stories, but some archeologists always open it anyway.😂 6y

Audiogardening! 🌱

I like the slow burn of this ghost story. I'm on chapter 6 and I still haven't figured out what's real, who's good and who's bad. It's going to be great late at night! Chris Bohjalian is coming to the local library in June!

Final descent into Burlington Airport -- and my beloved Vermont today. #whyilovethe802 (Discerning readers will also recall that this is the spot above Lake Champlain where the pilot in my novel, "The Night Strangers," begins his ill-fated ditching into the water.)

I really liked this book. If you are a hardcore horror fan, I can see how this book might disappoint you. For me, the supernatural and occult elements kept the story interesting. I‘m glad I read it during Halloween season. It was spooky and unsettling, particularly the epilogue. That‘s my kind of horror novel, more psychological suspense than actual scariness. I like everything I read by @ChrisBohjalian . #usareadingroadtrip #NewHampshire

"The door was presumed to have been the entry to a coal chute. It was a little under five feet in height and just about four feet wide, and it was composed of barn board and thick pieces of rough-hewn timber. At some point someone had sealed the door shut with six-inch long lag bolts. Thirty-nine of them ringed the wood and it was all but impenetrable, unless one were feeling energetic or had handy an ax." So begins my Halloween ghost story.

"You can see perfectly in your mind the leaden shades of gray stratus as the nose of your plane would start to nudge through them; the fleece of the cumulus, bright and cheerful when lit by the sun, dark and shadowy when not; the ominous towers and anvil plumes of the cumulonimbus you would steer your plane around when the traffic and the tower permitted." -- from THE NIGHT STRANGERS. Well make that 13 books read for me in January - I just finished this tonight. Really great and creepy. I was surprised at each turn. I'm a fan of horror movies but have, strangely, not read many horror books. This one didn't disappoint! 👍🏻

Bohjalian is one of my favorite authors, and this is his creepiest book. It'd actually be a good #scaretober read... I think ghostly kids fall into #disastrouskids #octphotochallenge.

Zelma He's one of my absolute favorites too. I am reading through his books slowly so I don't run out! This one is on my TBR. 8y
Soubhiville @Zelma I recently found out he's at the TX book festival at the beginning of Nov! I'm so excited! What's been your favorite title so far? 8y
Zelma @Soubhiville no!!!!! I had to cancel going to the TX book festival this year. Bummer. My favorite so far has been Midwives. I love the atmosphere and courtroom dramas are not my thing but it really grabbed me. What about you? 8y
Soubhiville I love tons, but those are my favorite two. I'm vegetarian, so I really related to BYKK. 8y

This is one of those books that wouldn't let me go. Set in a small NH town in the mountains, it centers around a family that buys an ancient Victorian house to get a fresh start. It's not until they move in that they discover the strange door in the basement. Haunting, witchy, and heart stopping!!

ChrisBohjalian Thank you so much! 5y
