For fans of Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale and Martha Hall Kelly's Lilac Girls, this powerful novel of fate, resistance, and family--by the international bestselling author of The Sweetness of Forgetting and When We Meet Again--tells the tale of an American woman, a British RAF pilot, and a young Jewish teenager whose lives intersect in occupied Paris during the tumultuous days of World War II. When newlywed Ruby Henderson Benoit arrives in Paris in 1939 with her French husband Marcel, she imagines strolling arm in arm along the grand boulevards, awash in the golden afternoon light. But war is looming on the horizon, and as France falls to the Nazis, her marriage begins to splinter, too. Charlotte Dacher is eleven when the Germans roll into the French capital, their sinister swastika flags snapping in the breeze. After the Jewish restrictions take effect and Jews are ordered to wear the yellow star, Charlotte can't imagine things getting much worse. But then the mass deportations begin, and her life is ripped forever apart. Thomas Clarke joins the British Royal Air Force to protect his country, but when his beloved mother dies in a German bombing during the waning days of the Blitz, he wonders if he's really making a difference. Then he finds himself in Paris, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, and he discovers a new reason to keep fighting--and an unexpected road home. When fate brings them together, Ruby, Charlotte, and Thomas must summon the courage to defy the Nazis--and to open their own broken hearts--as they fight to survive. Rich with historical drama and emotional depth, this is an unforgettable story that will stay with you long after the final page is turned.

tpixie @Soubhiville yes! Tanya‘s Soup Kitchen in Wichita, KS has the best soups! and salads and sandwiches. Her chicken curry soup is to die for, she makes a great tomato basil. Today I decided to have the fisherman‘s chowder because I have never seen them sell it before. It was tasty. Unfortunately there‘s only one independent bookstore around me to visit today so I‘ll have to make do and go to Barnes And Noble as well! 3y

I love Kristen Harmel's books but, they can gut you! November's #IllSeeYouInParis book is well researched but at times I felt as though I was being "talked down to". I alternated reading and listening to an audio version. Audio can sometimes bring so much more life to a book & make it seem eveb more real. Ruby is an American married to a Frenchman living in occupied Paris during the war time. Her bravery & courage(cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy during this terrible and tragic time in history is nearly unthinkable. What she did, what she went through, almost unbelievable! The book opens with a scene protraying an elderly couple in current times and it's not till they return at the end of the book that you come to know who they are. The bulk of the book, which was a little slow going at 1st and possibly didn't need to be as long as what it was, takes place during the war. I found the last 20% of the book the most riveting but the ending itself felt really rushed after the sluggish start. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this story, learning more about the resistance! As a romance, I felt it left a lot to be desired. If you're looking for a happily ever after ending, prepare yourself for heartbreak. Easily 4 stars for the historical fiction aspect for me. More like 3 stars for the romance.

Conpelling story but the clumsy writing style detracted from the story and seemed like it needed a stronger editor. I‘m glad this story is in the world and I‘m happy I read it but in the genre of historical literature, this is is just so-so for me.

Just finished. I was going to give up halfway through, but I took a break and read another book. I thought this one was going to be like most war stories, but I was pleasantly surprised when I went back and finished this. It was worth finishing! An American weds a Frenchman and spends the war in Paris helping the resistance. Much more to this story.

What a beautiful WWII story. I loved seeing the story from different perspectives and how each character was feeling. It just made the story so much more real. I also loved how you followed all the characters through that course of the war. Great to see how they changed as individuals throughout the war. Beautiful beautiful book!

I really like the premise of this book, but it was really a love story set in WWII. I think I‘ve just read too many WWII books that have similar plots and this one doesn‘t have the depth that others have. It‘s tragic, but the honest, true parts of the war are inferred not written. Ok, not great.
