Yoga of Max's Discontent

"A beautifully rendered epic journey . . . . The novel works on many levels and excels at them all." --New York Journal of Books In this captivating and surprising novel of spiritual discovery--a No. 1 bestseller in India--a young American travels to India and finds himself tested physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Max Pzoras is the poster child for the American Dream. The child of Greek immigrants who grew up in a dangerous New York housing project, he triumphed over his upbringing and became a successful Wall Street analyst. Yet on the frigid December night he's involved in a violent street scuffle, Max begins to confront questions about suffering and mortality that have dogged him since his mother's death. His search takes him to the farthest reaches of India, where he encounters a mysterious night market, almost freezes to death on a hike up the Himalayas, and finds himself in an ashram in a drought-stricken village in South India. As Max seeks answers to questions that have bedeviled him--can yogis walk on water and live for 200 years without aging? Can a flesh-and-blood man ever achieve nirvana?--he struggles to overcome his skepticism and the pull of family tugging him home. In an ultimate bid for answers, he embarks on a dangerous solitary meditation in a freezing Himalayan cave, where his physical and spiritual endurance is put to its most extreme test. By turns a gripping adventure story and a journey of tremendous inner transformation, The Yoga of Max's Discontent is a contemporary take on man's classic quest for transcendence.

This book was absolutely amazing and I was in love from the very beginning. I enjoyed entire paragraphs of this book! I want to find more books like it, especially non fiction. I'd give this 10 stars if I could. Unputdownable! Read it in a matter of hours. Want... NO, NEED more like it

Breaking from Miss Peregrine's to try this one. It's from a big used library sale I went to last year.... Been sitting on my shelf ever since. Giving it a go.

Hoopiefoot I‘m not a yoga person at all but I‘m surprised by how much this book has stuck with me. 5y
perfectsinner @Hoopiefoot I like the idea of yoga more than I like practicing. I need to get back into it. I'm really hoping this is as good as it sounds 🤞 5y

Let me be clear: I really enjoyed the first half of this book. But about halfway through Max's yogic journey, so many things started to feel like they weren't ringing true: he seemed just as self-absorbed as ever, despite his ~progress towards godliness~. The only reason it's not a flat-out pan is because it really is beautifully written - there are just so many ways it could have been better. #karanbajaj #theyogaofmaxsdiscontent

I actually am not sure this is a pick. Being a yoga instructor myself, parts of it I really liked. Loved his time at the ashram practicing pranayama and asanas. But, I felt much of Max's journey was forced. I'm scratching my head over the ending too. It asks good questions, though I didn't always like the answers. Thought I'd take a pic of the book on my prettiest yoga mat. Loki wanted in on the action, as always. #24in48 #LitsyAtoZ #petsoflitsy

I have no reason to love this book as much as I do. I don't do yoga, I'm not interested in spiritual quests, I have no desire to go to India. But this book wrapped me up and will not let me go.

Smrloomis I felt the same way about Eat and Run. I'm definitely only interested in one of the title's activities, but I really enjoyed reading about the other. 8y
Hoopiefoot @Smrloomis I'll have to check that one out. I'm an injured runner-turned cyclist but I still enjoy reading about running. 8y

I don't have a lot of words to describe this book. It's not what I expected it to be at all. I have never read a story quite like this before and I feel like the 5th star I'm not giving it is from my own personal hang ups than anything with the novel itself.

While this book wasn't my style, I recognize that others, especially those into Yoga, would love it. I love that this really shows Yoga as more than just exercise, but a spiritual journey.

I didn't anticipate it, but this book was addictive and compelling. The writing felt a bit clunky to me at times, but it was ultimately still a beautiful tale of Max's spiritual journey. It did make me realize I am not very enlightened though. Oh, well, maybe in my next life...

I didn't know what to think of this book when I first got it--but it surprised me in every way. The story of a white American man who decides to take the stereotypical "finding yourself" trip to India -- but written by an Indian man. I'll be thinking about this one for awhile.

This book was SO. GOOD. It gave me the feeling I was hoping to get but didn't from Siddhartha, TBH. There's valuable spiritual insight in it, if that's what you're into, but ultimately it's a compelling deep dive into a great character, which makes it awesome regardless of your spiritual leanings.

Read this book super fast! Really fascinating story about seeking enlightenment. The most I knew about yoga is that I could never do it because it may involve a headstand. It was really refreshing to learn about the power and art of yoga & yogis. Definitely inspired to seek out a yoga class!
