Vive a Canterbury. La Newton Compton ha pubblicato i romanzi Che fine ha fatto Mr Y. e PopCo, accolti con grande favore dal pubblico e dalla critica.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 174.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Library worker struggles : the returns sorter fails and you read the blurbs of books waiting to be returned while it reboots… and add another book to an already overwhelmed tbr stack 😉😂

Bored and listing favourite fiction in English, day... 4?
In the End of Mr Y, Ariel Manto is a PhD student somewhere in England, researching a long dead author and his book, of which there are no copies. Until she finds one in a charity shop, that is, and then things get really weird. For example, homeopathy works in this book, but not as pseudo medicine, but as magic which lets you time travel. Through genetic memory. Also featuring the god ⬇️

annamatopoetry of mice and real world (well... ) applications of Derrida's philosophy, and the internal life of a really rather broken young woman. I love it so much. 4y
annamatopoetry I have really liked some of Thomas's earlier books (especially Popco) but sadly nothing she has written since. 4y

I kept thinking that I'd read it before but it's just because I've read books with similar premises and themes and it felt very familiar. Thomas doesn't really offer anything original which makes the long stodgy discussions of quantum and dimensional physics caught up in mysticism and philosophy very dull. The narrator (Ariel Manto) is a collection of tired tropes rather than a person so there was nothing to hook me in. Free space for #bookbingo

The idea of £50 being too much for BOX OF BOOKS 🤯 (it might be more than you could afford but the idea that you could never even WANT to pay spend that much!)

#booktober day 2: an orange book! (please come play, the main graphic is on my Sept 30 post! )
one of my favourites (Scarlett Thomas unfortunately switched story style after this and I haven't liked any of her newer stuff. Popco and Going Out are excellent though.) I can't explain this book; it's weird and delightful.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 76 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram

Sace Hoopla has this one and now I can't decide if I want to do the audiobook or the e-book. 4y
StaceyKondla @Sace - oh gosh! I‘d probably get to it faster on audio 4y

Came across it by chance at my company‘s charity event. Costed me Q9, so I never hurried to read it. Finally started around Christmas last year and what a surprise! I couldn‘t have liked it more - it‘s one of those where you stop seeing the words and start seeing things happening in front of you, fall in love with the characters and totally understand how messed up they are, even if you yourself are not. One of a handful of books that made me cry.

1) the end of mr y is fantastic. 2) cheez doodlez or bust 3) sunset. Sunrise is way too early. 4) clothes, travel, books. Easy done. 5) I forget what counts by American rules, so I'll go by "primary and middle" and say 5th. #friyayintro @howjessreads via @Emilymdxn

Mehso-so

This was darker than I‘d expected, mostly because of the very damaged, self-destructive protagonist. But it‘s an interesting, intelligent and enjoyable read, although I found myself irritated by some of the indulgences which took the plot off in strange directions...

#FreakyFriday book 3 from @zeljka - this book was too cool. A doctoral student finds a rare book that seems to cause everyone who encounters it to disappear - because they can time and space travel with the info inside. It's mix of library research story and philosophical treatise and sci fi mind bender all in one. Makes me want to go finish S by J J Abrams! My cat likes the mouse on the cover too.

This book is so wonderfully smart and interesting that it kept me thinking about it a long time after I finished reading. (Scarlett, I apologize using it to save one of my characters by stopping a bullet😍)

I went to the soft opening of @interabangbooks this past weekend. Lori suggested this novel and...WOW! I have added so many book darts, and that last page! I would suggest this book for people who like science, theology, and a good book about magical books. A cursed book takes the characters to another dimension where they can read minds and time travel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My fav women certainly know how to write about #obsession in all its forms: sexual, romantic, platonic, intellectual, philosophical. All of these women are flawed, damaged, complex, unlikeable and likeable, and interesting. Love these writers and books so much 💜

andrew61 I've not tried mary gaitskill but heard one of her short stories on the new yorker podcast which I enjoyed. So far I've not come across anyone who has read her, do you recommend and where would you start? 8y

batsy @andrew61 I've only read Two Girls, and another novel called Veronica, I'm afraid. Two Girls is quite raw and edgy, quite bleak, many people don't like it...but many also do. ☺️ I'm interested in her collection of shorts, Bad Behavior. That might be a good place. And I think Veronica is a little less brutal, if you prefer something less bleak. 8y
Leftcoastzen Especially love Gaitskill ! 8y
batsy @Leftcoastzen This book! So good and so brutal. 8y

#novemberland #wereallmadhere #weirdestbook

The End of Mr Y is one of the weirdest books I have ever read! It took a while to get into as there are some pretty gross descriptions at the start, but I loved the novel as a whole, despite its weirdness and the craziness of the story. 🐀

This incredibly weird story features both a mouse god and a cursed book, yet is extremely philosophical. Ariel, a Ph.D. student, finds a book that has caused all of its readers to die or disappear--including her thesis advisor. Through the book, she reaches an alternate dimension which allows her to enter the minds of others and travel through time. Loved the plot and scientific concepts, although the characterization was a bit lacking. 4 stars.

MrBook Great review! #Beachreads are the best reads 😎. 8y

I know I have already done my #weirdbooks for #somethingforsept but then I remembered reading this beauty!
Such a bizarre story, odd characters, and of course a book that no one knows the end to (Mr Y)
An intriguing story and one I would highly recommend, but an absolute mindf*#k!
