What can I say about the queen of the murder mystery, all the clichés are here, but she created them. Hastings is a bit of a simpleton which gives us some funny moments and it's interesting to see Poirot's first case, also it has drawings with layouts of the room and the house, always a plus for me. You won't find any depth in the story, but if you grabbed an Agatha Christie book you weren't looking for it, just to be entertained.

I really liked this one because - of course - I didn‘t see the twist coming. 🤦‍♀️

I almost forgot to post my monthly round up! Lots of short reads. I tagged Styles because I didn't want to tag something I already had and none of the other books really stood out. Or well, if they did, it was for the wrong reasons. The Pride activity book was actually terrible! The meditation book was ableist, classist, and uninformative! The rest were basically fine, though Sam is My Sister was definitely inferior as a trans narrative.

Faranae Necklothitania is hilarious and I'll tag it in a review post another time, but I have to add it to Litsy. 7mo

The first book to feature Hercule Poirot is told from the point of view of Arthur Hastings, a soldier on leave from the Front in WWI. Hastings visits an old friend, John Cavendish who lives at Styles Court owned by his stepmother, Emily Inglethorp. John's wife, his younger brother, Lawrence, & a family friend, Cynthia Murdoch also live there, along with Emily's new husband, younger man, Alfred Inglethorp. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf When Emily suddenly dies & the local doctor is certain that it is murder, Hastings is relieved to run into Hercule Poirot, a former detective in the Belgian police force who is now a refugee living near Styles Court & whose benefactor was the same Emily Inglethorp. Poirot agrees to investigate Emily's murder & uncovers a family full of secrets, resentment, & greed. 10mo
OutsmartYourShelf I've seen the TV adaptations of the books starring David Suchet but I really couldn't remember this one. It's incredibly well thought out & kept me guessing - I only hope the rest of the books follow suit. 4🌟

I think this is my first Agatha Christie (that I actually finished? I‘ve started Death on the Nile twice but there were too many people & I lost concentration.) And it was really good, unsurprisingly.
Hercule Poirot investigates a murder & uncovers a will that could be the key. Told from the perspective of his friend who sometimes finds him to be a crackpot.

This is the first Poirot murder mystery that Agatha Christie wrote and I enjoyed the introduction to his character. I‘ve been reading them out of order off and on for years, so like most people I know what to expect — a complex whodunnit with an upstairs/downstairs cast of characters (or should I say suspects?!) and all the answers revealed at the end.

Bk10of my #BookMail is another of the Special Editions of Dame Agatha‘s novels. This was her debut novel way back in 1920 & the first Poirot story. A refugee of WWI, Poirot has resettled in England, near the estate of his host Emily Inglethorp. When Emily is poisoned, Poirot makes it his first investigation in his new country. Dame Agatha was just finding her feet with this book, but it‘s still well worth a read.

Agatha Christie's debut novel was also the first to feature Hercule Poirot, her famously eccentric Belgian detective. A refugee of the Great War, Poirot has settled in England near Styles Court, the country estate of his wealthy benefactor, the elderly Emily Inglethorp. When Emily is poisoned and authorities are baffled, Poirot puts his prodigious sleuthing skills to work.

I‘m turning to my Litsy friends who are fellow Agatha Christie devotees. I‘m planning my second tattoo, which I want to represent Poirot and Miss Marple. 💗💗 My first tattoo is a quote from Pride and Prejudice; this time, I want images rather than words.

~~If you were going to represent Agatha/Poirot/Marple visually, what images would you choose?~~

Thanks, friends!! (And here are some rereads I‘d like to do for “research” 😋)

LiteraryinPA So far my ideas are a teacup or a ball of yarn plus knitting needles for Marple. And the silhouette with the bowler hat/mustache/bow tie for Poirot. But those things don‘t seem to go together…? 2y

I may be the last mystery lover here to find the ‘All About Agatha‘ podcast, but at least I eventually discovered it! I decided to read each book and then listen to the podcast. I am very pleased so far. The podcast truly enhanced my read of her first book and it gave food for thought. I look forward to the next. Fortunately it has been 10+ years since I last read any Christie, so it feels like a new read since I recall little.

I sort of enjoyed this first introduction to the infamous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. After reading THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR, which takes place at the home of Agatha and Archie Christie, Styles, I had to read this one, which is based loosely on the infamous home of the Christies. Christie is a master at building suspense, but in this one, all Poirot does is never tell Hastings anything. A fun and gripping read, but not Christie's best.

This quote 😆. I've only read 2 Christie books. Both times I was startled by the vocabulary. The 1st time was reading the Orient Expess. The book was cataloged in my gradeschool library and included the word orgy. This time I was shocked by the 20th century normative racist mores. 😳 I wasn't expecting it. I think people read books like this for the same reason I got sucked into Downton Abbey. If someone could just tell me what that reason is..?

mandarchy I can't help but point out that the word orgy also appears in Peter Pan. When these books were published it just meant crazy party. My grandfather used to refer to the crazy stuff kids did as orgies. So unsettling to hear gramps say it 😳 2y
KathyWheeler There‘s a lot of very casual racism and anti-foreign sentiment in Christie‘s novels. I just started reading her books a few years ago and was very shocked by it. 2y
Scochrane26 I like Christie books because she usually has a creative ending & they‘re fast reads. The racism & foreigner references I try to ignore, as well as the term “old pussies”, which is used often in the Miss Marple series lol 2y
See All 7 Comments
mandarchy @KathyWheeler what a relief publishers are finally publishing alternate perspectives and making casual racism (never should have been a thing) unacceptable. I think I'll return to the 21st century. 2y
mandarchy @Scochrane26 this last week that has been the p word, I had to hear Colbert joke about T grabbing it to finally get what the p word was. I work with children. Swearing is so out of my norm. The p word is poop where I work. 2y
Scochrane26 @mandarchy I typically hate the p word, but it makes me laugh when I read it in a Christie book, maybe because I know it means something different. 2y
mandarchy @Scochrane26 we had a cat dish labeled with the p word in the '80s. It was so fun to wait for our exchange students to ask about it. That word is not a problem for me and that's why I wondered why they said p-word instead of pussy in the news. I was more shocked by the use of the n word in the book. 2y

28/22 In the UK David Suchet IS Poirot. As a mystery fan, Agatha Christie, is hugely lacking from my life. Although I did watch Poirot in the 90s. I‘m starting from the beginning and I‘m going to work my way through them all starting with this one published in 1920. Very well way to describe Poirot to those who do not know how he works. This was apparently Agatha‘s first mystery novel, which introduced Poirot. Haven read other books of Hers, this was quite tame. Though it was no less conniving. A family murder mystery, questions between both dies of this half family. Which made it little difficult to know who was on which side. Still a good read to get the worrying at that period.

The was amusing to come across. If not just People must really believe that. Both that they‘d be able to just know who the culprit was, but that family would know. That final chapter piece is exactly what Poirot does every mystery! Especially funny knowing this was Agatha‘s first mystery novel with him.
