Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks
Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks | E Lockhart
Frankie Landau-Banks at age 14: Debate Club. Her father's "bunny rabbit." A mildly geeky girl attending a highly competitive boarding school. Frankie Landau-Banks at age 15: A knockout figure. A sharp tongue.A chip on her shoulder. And a gorgeous new senior boyfriend: the supremely goofy, word-obsessed Matthew Livingston. Frankie Landau-Banks. No longer the kind of girl to take "no" for an answer. Especially when "no" means she's excluded from her boyfriend's all-male secret society. Not when her ex-boyfriend shows up in the strangest of places. Not when she knows she's smarter than any of them. When she knows Matthew's lying to her. And when there are so many, many pranks to be done. Frankie Landau-Banks, at age 16: Possibly a criminal mastermind. This is the story of how she got that way.

✏️ School usually starts a day or two after Labor Day around here. We had teacher days the week before. Still get that new school year feeling even though I‘ve been retired for three years!
✏️ The tagged book. Love a good boarding school book.

Play along Littens! I‘d love to add to my school setting TBR! #Two4Tuesday

This week on my podcast, bestselling author S.K. Ali is on to share one of her personal faves, THE DISREPUTABLE HISTORY OF FRANKIE LANDAU-BANKS by E. Lockhart. You may be less familiar with this title than others we‘ve covered on the show, but let me just say… it might be at the top of *my* all-time list now. Tune in for our conversation about all things boarding school, feminism, old boys clubs, and power. 💪 Listen at the link in my bio!

I stumbled upon this book and got it from Libby. Couldn‘t put it down. It‘s SO GOOD.

Frankie is a sophomore at an elite prep school. When she gets the attention of a popular senior boy, her life changes. She soon sees that he will protect his own interests before anything else, including the secret society he‘s part of.

This book tears into the patriarchal structure of elite schools and the ways their male alum perpetuate the structure.

Who else is doing #24in48 this weekend? Who else has a wildly unrealistic TBR for the event? 🙋‍♀️ You can follow my journey here or in more depth on my Instagram @ the.nerdy.spinster!!! Let me know where to follow you! @24in48

GypsyKat I‘m going to do what I can with it. Our pup just got spayed, so she‘s going to need extra love. And I have family in from out of town this weekend, but I‘ll do my best! I always post here and on IG too. 5y

Interesting YA book about a non-typical teenage girl. I loved the way she thought. Burn the patriarchy down, Frankie!

I needed a fun book and this was it! Frankie is a student at an exclusive boarding school and soon discovers a secret all male society at the school. As Frankie takes on this society in her own imperfect way, hijinxs ensue and she learns something about herself along the way. Although I grew up with completely different circumstances than Frankie, I could totally relate to her wanting to fit in yet still wanting to be seen for who she really is.

I read this when it first came out and loved it, figured since I wasn't emotionally ready for Harry Potter, this book about a BAMF that wants to burn the patriarchy down was a good choice for #booked2018 Takes.place at a school

Quick read! Interesting once you get past all the initial normal teenage scenery. There's a lot of psychology lessons embedded throughout to learn from..
Frankie is a sophomore at a prep school, tired of playing the role she is expected to play. She wants more.

"They do sometimes go crazy, these people, because the world is telling them not to want the things they want. It can seem saner to give up--but then one goes insane from giving up."

I enjoyed this, but after a bit it seemed kind of predictable and weighed down by one dimensional characters.

I fall in love for e.Lockhart books because of the boyfriend list and start reading all her books without researching what the book all about before.
I like this one, how the story developed but maybe the ending is just not my style. But still, i like it when i'm reading it.

I like this because the main character is unabashedly feminist and clever yet vulnerable, as teens are, when faced with how the world works (sexism and misogyny, in this case). She's not a one-note badass or victim. It's also a lesson in how power operates. Learning about Bentham's Panopticon is how she figures things out, so there's a dash of Foucault in how the narrative unfolds. #youngadult #ReadingWomenMonth @thereadingwomen

erzascarletbookgasm Have this on my TBR. Loved her other book 7y
batsy I was a bit let down by that one, @erzascarletbookgasm. I liked it but I couldn't quite connect. This is one of my favs. Her Ruby Oliver series is also fun! 7y

The book: delightful. I remember DNF-ing it when it came out; now I'm genuinely unsure why. It's utterly sufferable and pugnable. I went to a college with a LOT of societies and the meditation on Because We Can privilege here is quite spot-on.

The characters: so very very teen, which I mean in the best possible way. I think I'm #teamTrish, and perhaps both Frankie and the book underestimate her?

The library's choice of genre stickers: ??????????

onesmartcupcake The mystery sticker sort of works but I find the romance tag utterly baffling! 8y

E. Lockhart may have hit it big with We Were Liars, but her earlier work, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, is phenomenal.

#TBT "Frankie makes plenty of bad decisions, second guesses herself and deals with body issues and bad hair days and where to sit in the cafeteria and that horrible in between time of adolescence. But, most importantly, she thinks and doesn‘t downplay her intelligence. She‘s a teenager and she‘s figuring out the world around her and what role she wants to play in that world. I‘d be proud to have a daughter as kickass as Frankie Landau-Banks."

This book has been so important to me at several stages of my life. The heroine could probably achieve world domination, which is always fun to read, but what I really loved was her unwillingness to compromise her awesomeness for a boy--even one she was crazy about.
