The Gone World
The Gone World | Tom Sweterlitsch
Inception meets True Detective in this science-fiction thriller of spellbinding tension and staggering scope. The Gone World follows a special agent into a savage murder case with grave implications for the fate of mankind. Shannon Moss is part of a clandestine division within the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. In Western Pennsylvania, 1997, she is assigned to solve the murder of a Navy SEAL's family--and to locate his teenage daughter, who has disappeared. Though she can't share the information with conventional law enforcement, Moss discovers that the missing SEAL was an astronaut aboard the spaceship U.S.S. Libra--a ship assumed lost to the darkest currents of Deep Time. Moss knows first-hand the mental trauma of time-travel and believes the SEAL's experience with the future has triggered this violence. Determined to find the missing girl and driven by a troubling connection from her own past, Moss travels ahead in time to explore possible versions of the future, seeking evidence or insight that will crack the present-day case. To her horror, the future reveals that it's not only the fate of a family that hinges on her work, for what she witnesses rising over time's horizon and hurtling toward the present is the Terminus: the terrifying and cataclysmic end of humanity itself. Luminous and unsettling, The Gone World bristles with world-shattering ideas yet remains at its heart an intensely human story.

Sci-fi thriller! Moss is investigating the death of a Navy Seal‘s family & trying to find the missing daughter, the Navy Seal turns out to be an astronaut and when she time shifts into the future she finds out that what she‘s investigating can end humanity. A #BOTM selection!

I'm loving this book, but it's making me feel incredibly stupid. Time travel books are my jam, and this one is impossible to put down. I'm hoping by the end I'll understand everything that has me scratching my head at the moment. So far, even though I'm struggling with some of the "thinkier" concepts, like quantum foam and Brandt-Lomonaco knots, this is the best book I've read this year.

I‘ve been so sick with bronchitis the last week+ that I haven‘t been able to read at all. I finally picked this back up for book club and I‘m so confused. It‘s like the rules for time travel change depending on what the plot needs. I have to finish it this weekend, but it‘s giving me a headache. Has anyone else read this? Does it get better/start to make sense or should I just accept that it‘s gibberish I will never comprehend?

Hey #GroupE! The tagged book is supposed to be - Sci-Fi Mystery Thriller if you want all three. The others are straight mystery-thrillers. If none of these appeal, I‘ve got tons more mystery novels on my shelves in a variety of sub-genres, with a mix of authors, translated or not, and locations. Just let me know if I should search for anything specific. 😌

rsteve388 I have Gone World as an audiobook that I just picked up. So this sounds great. That's my pick! 3y

DGRachel @rsteve388 I‘m leaning towards Cruel is the Night only because it has overall better ratings and I already own it. I‘ll have to buy Gone World. Not a hardship if it‘s the book everyone else prefers. 😂 3y
rsteve388 Oh, well. I can change and adapt. My choice is now Cruel is the Night. ;) 3y
Johanna414 The only one I'm a little hesitant about is The Boy in the Suitcase, just because I'm a wimp when it comes to “small child in peril“ storylines. The rest all sound fantastic though!
3y
DGRachel @Johanna414 The title of that one makes me a little queasy, too! We can cross that one off! 3y
DGRachel @Johanna414 @rsteve388 @suvata I‘m going to go ahead and go with The Gone World. It has better Goodreads and StoryGraph reviews than Cruel is the Night, even though Litsy reviews are the opposite. Fingers crossed. 3y

I can‘t quite put my finger on what went wrong with this one for me, but this was a disappointment. Oddly dull for a story about time travel and the end of the world, and the plot felt overly complicated. However, I‘m giving it a “so-so” rating for showcasing some really interesting ideas and a truly terrifying end of times vision.

A weird book, one that, under all the government murder investigations, is sort of about how the death of a friend might be the end of the world.

Heard good things about this book and I'm finally reading it (pretty sure Nocturnal Readers box sent me this one years ago, back when they existed). Gotta say, I don't trust a single damn thing about the time travel - seems like a lot of self-justification! Seems like relatively tidy lies you tell yourself to make it okay! I am intrigued way more by this mystery I'm concocting than the one it presents, which isn't a complaint.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

Sci-fi and horror play well together in the hands of a capable author, and this novel‘s a great example of how awesome that mix of genres can be when the writer nails the mix just right. The only downside to this book is the ending: falls flat, does not take advantage of all that momentum leading up to it. That aside though, this was really fun to read, and would likely translate well onscreen, big or small.

A surprisingly effective reading experience combining murder mystery with scientifically feasible time travel that avoids the stereotypes. There is a steep curve of tension, violence and complexity going hand in hand, but hanging in there was rewarding. And it‘s always satisfying to read something with an original twist which is definitely the case with The Gone World. #timetravel #mystery #scifi

Well, I didn‘t love it...which means lunch with my friend who really wants to talk about it should be a lot of fun. I thought the book was good, really loved the premise—time traveling Naval investigator trying to solve a murder while staying one jump ahead of the end of the world/universe & finding the going much more difficult & complicated than expected—but thought the execution was good not great (dragged a little). A pick for the premise...

I‘m done distracting myself from this book. I need to finish it so I can start Brandon Sanderson‘s Skyward—my son just finished it, promptly demanded the sequel (for which there is no publication date yet), & then told me I need to read it so we can talk about it. He refuses to say anything about it until I read it because he doesn‘t want to give anything away. Talking about books is always fun. Talking about books with your kids is THE BEST!

I only have myself to blame because I wanted hard sci-fi, and boooooy did I get it. The premise is: “It‘s NCIS! Solving crimes via time travel! Something something apocalypse!” It was like catnip to me (not the NCIS part because really?). I was instantly engrossed, but the book fizzled out for me. Amazing concepts, twists and turns galore, but too much gore plus and ending I hated left me cold. 2/5

I flippin‘ loved this book. I‘ve seen it referenced as “True Detective meets Inception / Twelve Monkeys” and that‘s kind of accurate: time-travelling-crime-adventure colliding with horror-sci-fi. It kicks off with a bang that‘s just...super creepy and cinematic. If you enjoyed the “omg, what did I just read” aspect of Ninefox Gambit, then give it a go. Although a warning for violence.

East_Of_Imagination Yassss! I just started this book and was hooked from the prologue. I made the mistake of starting it alone at night and now I‘m traumatized 🙈 7y
