He was young-maybe twenty or so-and he must once have been a good-looking kid. Kinsey could see that. But now his body was covered in scars, his face half-collapsed. It saddened Kinsey and made her curious. She could see he was in a lot of pain. But for three weeks, as Kinsey'd watched him him doggedly working out at the local gym, putting himself through a grueling exercise routine, he never spoke. Then one Monday morning when there was no one else in the gym, Bobby Callahan approached her. His story was hard to credit: a murderous assault by a tailgating car on a lonely rural road, a roadside smash into a canyon 400 feet below, his Porsche a bare ruin, his best friend dead. The doctors had managed to put his body back together again-sort of. His mother's money had seen to that. What they couldn't fix was his mind, couldn't restore the huge chunks of memory wiped out by the crash. Bobby knew someone had tried to kill him, but he didn't know why. He knew he had the key to something that made him dangerous to the killer, but he didn't know what it was. And he sensed that someone was still out there, ready to pounce at the first sign his memory was coming back. He'd been to the cops, but they'd shrugged off his story. His family thought he had a screw loose. But he was scared-scared to death. He wanted to hire Kinsey. His case didn't have a whole lot going for it, but he was hard to resist: young, brave, hurt. She took him on. And three days later, Bobby Callahan was dead. Kinsey Millhone never welshed a deal. She'd been hired to stop a killing. Now she'd find the killer.

Do I love Sue Grafton books because they‘re (mostly) set in Santa Barbara, or do I love Santa Barbara because her books are set there? Probably a little of both! #setinaplaceyoulove #bookmoods

Really enjoyed this one! Even though my mind went in 20 directions about the murderer, it still didn‘t feel overly complicated. Sue Grafton descriptions are such a pleasure to read and I love that the language is not dumbed down! The subplot regarding Kinsey‘s landlord was a nice addition too!

Another fun murder mystery! Plus a subplot with a shady lady dating landlord Henry. And I love how dated everything is, how all Kinsey‘s work is done without cell phones and laptops.

So I finished this earlier this week (just hadn't had time to update my Litsy in a while).

I love Kinsey. I need to get the rest of the books to keep going! But definitely glad I started this series!

Bought it at Half-Priced books :)

jessinikkip Because of you, I saw M in a free library in town and had to get it. Now I need the rest. Like I needed more books 🙄😝 5y
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip I don't think you need to read them all to get the most out of it. Each book has a new case so its might be okay to read alone. But getting more of Kinsey's character I am sure it helps reading the previous books. I need to start getting the others (I had been buying them at used bookstores and now... I might have to just wait for shelter in place to end) 5y
jessinikkip @ElizaMarie I will look into more later and see if I can jump in so late and be OK. Do you have M yet? 5y
See All 9 Comments
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip no. I only had A, B and C (I gave A away... I can send you B and C --- I am almost done with C) 5y
jessinikkip LOL I was about to say I could send you M when Im finished with it! Would you like me to? 5y
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip sure. It will take me awhile to get to it (since I am trying to go in order since I started with A , B , and C in order). Also yeah... I can definitely send you the B and C sometime next week 5y
jessinikkip Thats fine. Take your time. I'll get on M once I finish the TBR for the month and pass it to you 5y
jb72 She has some good lines in her books. I may have to tackle them next year. 5y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I love them! I need to start getting the other ones. I will probably start ordering them from Half-Priced books soon. (I had decided when I started this journey that that's what I would do and then share them ... since I can't reread mysteries)

But they are super good!

One problem with re-reading mysteries is that it doesn‘t take long to puzzle out the motive and/or whodunnit, even after over 30 years! It‘s a good thing that this series has strong characters and great banter. It‘s interesting to see how author Grafton develops her techniques, as well.

This 2,000 piece puzzle is coming along slowly. Picture frame from Hipstamatic app.

ElizaMarie I love love love Grafton so far! I am excited to be starting this one soon. But I have enjoyed the other ones! 5y

ValerieAndBooks @Suet624 I personally could get easily addicted to puzzles but would need a dedicated space before letting that happen. This one is on a coffee table, not a place I‘d always want a puzzle. 5y

Starting on C is for Corpse (you can see my purchase date written in it 😲) and a 2,000 piece jigsaw puzzle🧩 that I had gifted my son a few years ago and which remained unopened until now 😆.

Lcsmcat We got a set of 5 jigsaw puzzles for Christmas that didn‘t get opened until quarantining began. We finished the first one last weekend. 5y
LeahBergen I was just thinking I might have to order a puzzle. 😆 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Lcsmcat it is a good diversion, isn‘t it? I think a lot of us are becoming puzzle fans (or more so). @LeahBergen good luck— apparently they are selling out online 😮 5y

This series is just too much fun!! I love Kinsey & her mishaps as much as I love her bravery! I also love how the case wraps itself up in a neat little package in 15 minutes!!! A fun twist in this one was her landlord's tryst with a sketchy minx!

Happy Sunday, Littens! It has been a very snowy week, with feet upon feet of lake effect descending on upstate New York. This has made travel, work, and loads of other things difficult, and “midwinter mehs” are in full effect. Spring gets closer every day, though! #Twinkle doesn‘t let the snow get her down, though. She likes to roll in it. 😂❤️🐶 We have since come in from our walk and have curled up on the couch to read. #atoyreread

I was seriously underwhelmed by the halftime show and the commercials during the Super Bowl, so I spent most of it reading. This one, if I remember right, is a bit sad. 😔 Each book is better than the last, though, and I‘m excited to get started...hence the dark, uninteresting photo that I took while I read in bed. 😂

#bestnarrator I know that audiobook narrators are not what was originally intended but it's immediately what I thought of. A great narrator makes all of the difference. I love Judy Kaye's narration of the Kinsey Millhone series so she is my pick. #octphotochallenge Day 10

Also, pardon me as I inundate your feed with posts today as I'm behind on both photo challenges. #sorrynotsorry 😉
