Secret Life of Bees | Sue Monk Kidd
Sue Monk Kidd s The Secret Life of Bees, a heartwarming coming of age tale set in 1960s South Carolina, a multi-million copy New York Times bestseller, now an award-winning film starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys Fans of Kathryn Stockett s The Help and Beth Hoffman s Saving CeeCee Honeycutt will love Sue Monk Kidd s Southern coming of age tale. The Secret Life of Bees was a New York Times bestseller for more than 125 weeks, a Good Morning America Read This Book Club pick and was made into an award-winning film starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Beestells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's most vicious racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come."

Some books just feel like magic, and for me, this is one of them (among the likes of Where The Heart is, The Help, and Practical Magic). I think what makes the magic is the author's ability to fully immerse the reader's senses in her descriptions of the setting, and to make the reader fall so in love with the characters. This one is going in my top 10. 🥰

For this one, if I‘ve read even one of the books in the series, I‘m counting it! Nevertheless, my score is 32/100.

I want to read (among others) the tagged book and to finish Emma already (currently 43%).

Oryx I have a scratched blanket chest. It's under the window, and the dog likes to put her front paws on it to look out the window 🤦‍♀️. Assume yours is courtesy of kitty? 2y
Susanita @Oryx Yes! Some of it is from kitties. It was in my husband‘s grandmother‘s house before we got it, so I think kitties are only partially responsible. 2y

This is one of the two books that I think everyone should read in their life. I think this book is especially poignant for women. All the characters were diverse. None of them were a stereotype, but rather unique with strengths and flaws. This book explores female relationships, race, and religion and somehow ties all that in with bee keeping in a magical way. It's an incredible story that will resonate with you.

Adored The Invention of Wings, remained largely unimpressed by this one. Didn't connect with the story or the characters, didn't really buy the relationships & the "deep & meaningfuls" didn't move me in the slightest. Lily didn't read as authentic, her personality seemed indistinct. Not a real lot happened either - the turns of the plot seemed contrived to me. And the writing seems weirdly flat compared to IOW. I'm a bit disappointed....

perfectsinner The Book of Longings and The Invention of Wings are my favs from her. My teacher read this to us in high school and I've read it separately since then. The Mermaid Chair so far is one of my least favs. 2y

1. Waterstones. Yes, it's a big soulless company but my local branch is like a second home to me!

2. I'd go for some borderline rude pun like 'What The Book?!' or 'Fancy a Book?' or 'Bookwits' or 'For Book's Sake' because my sense of humour is still that of a 14 year old!!!

3. Tagged

Coming of age story set in 1960s South Carolina. I really loved spending time with the characters in this one, it's the kind of book where you keep wondering what they're all up to when you're not reading the book.

Also apparently I've been living under a rock because I didn't realize there was a movie adaptation. Will have to check it out!

If you enjoy imagery too# it‘s fullest extent, this book is 100% for you. In the beginning of chapter, Kidd gives the reader a little foreshadowing insight to where the plot is going to thicken next. While you may be able to assume what is coming next, you wrapped in by the arms of her story telling and pulled in even closer.

After reading and absolutely loving The Book of Longings, I‘ve decided to delve into other books by Sue Monk Kidd. The tagged book is one I read long ago and loved. I‘m not usually one to reread books. Now I‘m buying and rereading books, and dreaming of completely filling my bookshelves. My current read is also one I read long ago and loved. I blame (and thank) Litsy for this new habit. 🤣🥰📚

Ruthiella I don‘t reread often but when I do, it‘s usually interesting since I change as a reader and sometimes notice different things the second time around. 3y

I was looking for audiobooks similar to some of Fannie Flagg‘s books and this was recommended. I would highly recommend the #audiobook for this if you decide to read it. The narrator is fabulous and really transports you right into the story. Such an amazing group of women in an unusual setting. I didn‘t want it to end. I‘m gifting the book to my mom because I know she‘ll love it. Recommended if you enjoy Fannie Flagg and books like The Help. 5⭐️

JenlovesJT47 Anyone seen the movie? I‘m wondering if they do the book justice. 3y

There was heavy foreshadowing at certain points which was unnecessary because I was already feeling this isn't going to end well. Apart from that, some interesting descriptions of beekeeping and an intriguing religious atmosphere. But still I finished it thinking 'so?'
