Wind in the Willows
Wind in the Willows | Kenneth Grahame
The much-loved classic tales of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad. When Mole goes boating with Ratty instead of doing his spring-cleaning, he discovers a whole new world. As well as adventures on the river and in the Wild Wood, there are high jinks on the open road with that reckless ruffian, Mr Toad of Toad Hall. Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad become the firmest of friends, but after Toad's latest escapade, can they join together and beat the wretched weasels once and for all? The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is one of the twenty wonderful classic stories being relaunched in Puffin Classics in March 2015.

Book 50 of 2024! 🌟 The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame in beautiful Folio edition. strangely enough it was my first read of this charming story and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Vansa Isn't it UTTERLY spectacular. I love the strange, haunting bit where Badger tells Mole and Rat that the woods existed before humans and will after us as well. 1w
Booksbymybed @Vansa that part made me shiver in the best way! Loved everything about this book! 7d

Sid and I LOVED reading The Wind in the Willows together. I‘d forgotten how beautiful and rich the writing is. Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad are such a spirited and diverse bunch of characters, and the novel manages many changes in pace and direction which really immerse the reader in the complex animal world, and deepen the characterisation of each of the central animals. Somehow Toad is more of a pest every time I read this.

Ruthiella I feel like Toad appeals mostly to children, who can revel in how naughty he is. Ratty and Mole and their snug quarters and picnic lunches appeal the adults. 🐸 6mo

It was just an absolute delight to revisit this old favorite. Mole abandoning his spring cleaning because the weather outside is so amazing is a definite mood, and I was here for it 😂 Loads of fun adventures and delightful characters make this such a fun read. I have vivid memories of Dad reading this one out loud to us because at one point Toad becomes enamored with a car whose horn (according to him) goes “poop poop“ and as kids we thought ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) our very proper dad saying “poop“ was absolutely hilarious 😆

I didn't get out on Small Business Saturday to support my local indie, so I treated myself to some new audiobooks and tossed them a little support via libro.fm.

A friend from high school passed away a couple of months ago. A week before he died, he asked for book recs. He never got around to mine, but he said he had read The Wind in the Willows a few times. I'll honor his upcoming birthday by finally reading it.

Kind of surprised it's classified as a children's classic. A glance at Wikipedia suggests Kenneth Grahame may have been writing from life, and while it's more focused on good and bad qualities of the individual than commentary on society as a whole, thematically it feels more directed towards an older reader. Wistful, beautiful writing clashing with one too many chapters dealing with a narcissistic, near sociopathic Toad. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality It feels less like the Toad has a character arc, and more like they finally successfully forced redemption on him in the last few pages. I would very much rather have continued with the 'and they were roommates' 😉 vibes of Mole and Rat, or even the activities of the relatable curmudgeon of Badger. 1y

As I had to wait for the second-hand bookshop to open, I whiled away some time looking in a charity shop, where I picked up a copy of WitW, which is a glaring hole in my reading record. I also popped into Action Records, where I found Belle and Sebastian's latest, an old Beck disc of remixes from his Guero album, and a compilation of Courtney Barnett EPs 🐸🐀📗💿
#BooksAndMusic

Ruthiella I also only first encountered TWitW as an adult, and I really loved it. Hope you do too! 2y
Bookwomble @Ruthiella I've seen many of the film and TV adaptations, so I feel I'm on safe ground 😊 Perhaps we can sometimes have a different or deeper appreciation of a classic children's story when we first find it as an adult 😌 2y
dabbe Glaring hole for me, too! Thanks for the reminder! 😊 2y

TieDyeDude Nice! The Courtney Barnett EP set is great, I love her music! I've never read WitW either. I don't shy away from children's books as an adult, though. If they're good, it should matter what age you read them at ☺️ 2y
LeahBergen That‘s a great little edition of WitW! 2y
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude I've listened to quite a lot of her music online, but didn't have any in my collection until now. This disc is really good 😊 We're agreed on the longevity of the enjoyment of children's literature 🤝 2y
Bookwomble @LeahBergen It's a 1965 Methuen edition, with Shepherd's illustrations. Only £2, which was a bargain as it's a nice clean copy 😊 I love that shade of green on the dust jacket 💚 2y
Bookwomble @dabbe I think we'll all have these idiosyncratic ellipses in our reading, which are as interesting in their way as the books we've read. I'm sure it's an idea that'll have been thought before (probably by Borges), but perhaps this is our "anti-library", and will naturally be vastly larger than our "read-library". 2y
dabbe @Bookwomble Interesting thought and one I'll have to ponder. It is fascinating how we choose books and at what particular time we choose them--or not as the case may be. What makes someone finally pick up THAT book and say, “Now's the time.“ Sometimes that never happens, and the book still sits on that shelf or gets sent off to hopefully be chosen by someone else. #tobechosenornot #thatisthequestion 2y
Bookwomble @dabbe I'm such a mood reader that I've got books I bought over 40 years ago I haven't quite felt I want to read yet, but certainly am not ready to let go of! 😄😒📚 2y

One of my all-time favourites and a pleasure at any age, though perhaps an adult might get more out of it. This novel about a gentlemen's club of small creatures who enjoy pottering about, thinking, and the finer things in life has some interesting subtexts.

I really enjoyed this breezy little book. My copy has an intro and afterword by Jane Yolen, and she calls it three stories in one: Toad‘s adventure story; the friendship tales of Rat, Mole, and Badger; and the Pan interlude. I liked the friendship best, as I found Toad unlikeable and the interlude odd. My June #DoubleSpin and first goal met for #AnyWayYouReadathon !

Eggbeater Nice job! 👏👏👏 You are making me want to re-read this after all these years. 3y
Ruthiella I agree with the 3 books and I also prefer the friendship of Mole and Ratty. But since it is a kids book, I‘ll bet children generally prefer the parts with naughty Mr. Toad . 3y
ravenlee @Ruthiella she pointed out that kids like Toad‘s antics, while adults tend to prefer the essentially middle-aged trio, and I had to agree. I think this is one of those books that is completely different if you read it as a child and as an adult, like you wouldn‘t even remember some of it as being in the book at all. I hope to share this with kiddo sometime and see what she gets out of it. 3y
See All 7 Comments
batsy Yep, when I read it as a kid it was Toad being absolutely bonkers that stuck with me years later (but Badger is someone I relate to now that I'm older 😆) 3y
TheAromaofBooks I have an edition illustrated by Tasha Tudor and the pictures are just perfect! This one is a bit of a nostalgia read for me as I can remember Dad reading it out loud to us; we were especially entertained whenever he had to say “poop poop“ since that was the sound of Toad's car horn haha 3y
MidnightBookGirl I know I read this as a kid, but I maybe should revisit this one. I am planning a Bunnicula series re-read soon, so maybe I'll just sneak some more childhood favorites in. 3y

I adored this story. It‘s a book i would love to re-read, although this time from an edition which has illustrations as gorgeous as @ju.ca.no ‘s copy. It‘s a simple story but one full of many lessons for children & adults alike. Ratty, Mole, Toad, & Badger live in the countryside & go through many moments of adventures & thrill, constituting lessons for life – friendship, forgiveness, love, helpfulness, appreciation for nature & its bounty. 👇🏽

This book was both charming and frustrating. The character of Mr. Toad is an annoying, impulsive blowhard... but thank god he‘s in the story, as otherwise not much of anything would have happened. It was a unique interesting read overall, but there are huge plot holes and issues that make zero sense, especially in relation to Mr. Toad. I could probably talk for a half hour or so about my mixed feelings about this book!😂
