French cartoonist Pénélope Bagieu has created witty and informative biographies of 33 women, collected in this volume. Some of the women are well-known, like Josephine Baker, Tove Jansson & Temple Grandin. Others were new to me, like Liberian social activist Leymah Gbowee (who was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize), and Agnodice, a gynaecologist who lived in Ancient Greece. Translation is by Montana Kane. I recommend it. #WomenInHistory #comics

I had heard about Frances Glessner Lee on the 99% Invisible podcast. Lee made exquisite miniature replicas of crime scenes in order to train police officers. I did NOT know that Lee was the inspiration for the character Jessica Fletcher.

These two images of Queen Njinga of Ndongo are obviously based on the same original portrait, which I believe is located in a convent in Portugal. Cartoonist Penelope Bagieu‘s is on the left (in tagged book) and Russian illustrator Natalia Popova‘s is on the right (in Ekiuwa Aire‘s picture book biography of this historical figure).

I suppose I should start reviewing January's books!

This was a fun way to learn about 30 rebel ladies through history, including Hedy Lamarr and the recently deceased Betty Davis. After each profile there is a double page spread of related artwork and they might have been the best part. This would be a cool gift for the young ladies in your life, just make sure they are mature enough for the adult situations a few of these women endured.

Maybe I‘m to sensitive here, but this picture annoys me.

This is the sisters Mirabal also known as Las Mariposas (The Butterflies). They were fighting the dictator in the Dominican Republic and were pretty badass. And I‘m feeling that this picture is turning them into some pin-up girls.

Does anyone else get that feeling?

I absolutely loved this illustration from the book. The Colors ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜.

This is a picture of Nzinga (1583-1663), Queen of Ndongo and Matamba (now Angola), keeping an eye on the Portuguese.

I read a story a day throughout April and I finished today. What a wide range of women! They were all interesting and told you just enough to make you want to know more. The illustrations emphasized the facts in a humorous and unforgettable way. The last one was the best - it was Penelope Bagieu! Looking forward to book 2! #100YEARS100BOOKS #63 #BookSpinBingo #16

I did not expect this to be the best thing I have read this year but it is. Brazen is a collection of graphic short retellings of the lives of 29 inspirational women (including Lozen as seen above). I loved Bagieu‘s artistic style but this book also really engaged my mind, leading me to seek out more information about these subjects and create playlists of the featured musical artists (Josephine Baker, Betty Davis, Sonita Alizadeh, The Shaggs).

#FebruaryFeels Day 25: This definitely falls into the category of #FaveGraphicNovel. Bagieu‘s voice is facetious and pert but never jarring nor intrusive. It was just plain witty, fun, and oh-so-refreshing. I am sure if the women had their way, they would have said their dialogues the way that Bagieu has given voice to them here: with an insouciant air that is tinged with defiance. #Movember Day 8: The brazen women featured in this graphic memoir all led their lives with a #ExpressYourself mentality. From Ndongo and Matamba to the Dominican Republic, Bagieu represented diverse women fearlessly in a way that has not been done before. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-jHI

A fun collection of stories focused on strong women in world history. I did really enjoy the wide variety of class levels, time periods and cultures/ethnicities being portrayed in the book. These are great resources for young women to gain access to because of the opportunities of inspiration and finding a new role model.

This was DELIGHTFUL. I read a library copy, but intend to acquire my own. I want my daughter to have it to read when she‘s old enough to understand cultural & historical context, as well moral ambiguity. The women in this collection were truly brazen. Courageous and determined across the board, but not always kind or honest. (Murder was involved at times, as in this illustration.) I loved reading about them.
