pickThis was a good if somewhat sad historical fiction short story. It imagines a possible arc for a real Culper Ring female agent about whom almost nothing is known. It incorporates some lore and the author is very clear in her afterword that the story is built around the known contribution of Agent 355 but is, alas, conjecture in her story. I felt sorrowful at the end, but glad I heard it nonetheless as so many of women‘s stories are lost history.

She was cared for mostly by her older brother David; the 2 of them forming a solid relationship. She became a healer for both animals and humans. As an adult she founded the Red Cross❤️.

pick4 ⭐This book chronicles Sophie Blanchard, the first woman to go solo in a hot air balloon. She was one of the first female aeronauts. Little is known of her life before marrying Jean Pierre Blanchard, a famous aerialist of the time. This is a great beginning look at woman who dared to do what many thought only men could do. Finding out that Sophie died so young, due to a fire and a fall from her balloon, is heartbreaking but also real.

This is Benedict‘s version of the real Agent 355 — a woman spy who helped identify Benedict Arnold as a traitor. Elizabeth is strong and smart; she‘s quick to realize that men will talk freely in front of her as they underestimate the intelligence of women. There‘s also some romance.
