The Weight of Lies
The Weight of Lies | Emily Carpenter
In this gripping, atmospheric family drama, a young woman investigates the forty?-year?-old murder that inspired her mother's bestselling novel, and uncovers devastating truths-and dangerous lies. Reformed party girl Meg Ashley leads a life of privilege, thanks to a bestselling horror novel her mother wrote decades ago. But Meg knows that the glow of their very public life hides a darker reality of lies, manipulation, and the heartbreak of her own solitary childhood. Desperate to break free of her mother, Meg accepts a proposal to write a scandalous, tell-all memoir. Digging into the past-and her mother's cult classic-draws Meg to Bonny Island, Georgia, and an unusual woman said to be the inspiration for the book. At first island life seems idyllic, but as Meg starts to ask tough questions, disturbing revelations come to light...including some about her mother. Soon Meg's search leads her to question the facts of a decades-old murder. She's warned to leave it alone, but as the lies pile up, Meg knows she's getting close to finding a murderer. When her own life is threatened, Meg realizes the darkness found in her mother's book is nothing compared to the chilling truth that lurks off the page.

#JulyJourneys

Finished up today & overall it was a good dark & twisty thriller. The audio was well done & although it took me a while to warm up to the main character, I did & I had to see how it was all going to unfold. Megan‘s mother is a famous author known for her novel based on the murder of a young Native-American girl on a small island off the Georgia coast she stated at. She won‘t be getting her any #parentsday cards as Francis is a ⬇️

DebinHawaii …cold & distant mother. She‘s so bad at parenting that Megan takes an offer to write a tell-all book about their relationship & heads to Bonny Island to write & to solve the mystery of who killed the local girl as Francis‘ novel Kitten points to a the young daughter of the hotel Francis stayed at. Happy families with good parents these are not! 3y

#Audiosouping to this one again today & hoping to finish it up today. I‘m afraid this isn‘t a very pretty soup.😆 It‘s a lentil soup recipe from 97 Orchard Street where a ringwurst (like a knackwurst or kielbasa) is cooked in the soup & I am modifying the recipe to make it vegan & using plant-based sausages that I browned first. It‘s for my virtual foodie book club & at least it smells really good! Finished soup pics later. #kitchenexperiments

#JulyJourneys

For National #ListeningDay I did some of my usual Sunday #audiosouping to the tagged book. I‘m about 2/3 through it & it‘s not bad. The other two books are next up in my audio book #TBR & I am not sure which I‘ll listen to next.

The soup is a smoked salmon bisque I am tossing together to use up some smoked salmon & heavy cream. Finished soup pic coming later.

Eggs Soup is wonderful 🍲 - well done👏🏻📚🎧 3y

I wasn‘t feeling like making soup today so instead of #audiosouping I did some #audioblogging & just did a roundup of 8 fruit soups for summer. Some are sweet, some are savory. There‘s a link in comments below to the post with the recipe links.

I think this audiobook popped up in the Audible Plus catalogue that comes with membership so I started listening to it the other day. I‘m only about 90 minutes in but so far it‘s keeping my attention.

Chrissyreadit Do you have favorites? I was just thinking about making a plum soup. It was common in my Polish friends homes, and I need to look it up. 3y
DebinHawaii @Chrissyreadit Plum soup sounds delicious. I really liked the Watermelon & Summer Berry & the Cold Cherry Lemon, although all of these were good! 3y
Chrissyreadit @DebinHawaii Im going to print and save. I love soup so much! 3y

There‘s plenty of #Death in this enthralling audiobook! Meg‘s mother is a famous horror novelist and Meg decides to dig into the real events that spurred her mother‘s most famous novel, Kitten. The plot takes surprising turns and captures your attention from start to finish! Plus, it‘s wonderfully performed! #AudioColoring #ChillingPhotoChallenge #TeamStoker 4hrs of 24hrs #Scarathlon #24B4Monday 11 pts

TorieStorieS @TheReadingMermaid is 31 points right? 5x4 for reading during the marathon and then 11 for the book? 5y
BeansPage Actually I'm not going to tally up the points for hours until the very end when everybody puts in their final scores. So this would only be for reading the book. 5y

Wow! Wow! Wow! I can‘t recall how I learned of this book but it is as if it found me- not the other way around. Meg is the daughter of Frances Ashley, best selling author of one of the world‘s most famous crime novels. Frances is a better writer than mother to Meg, who is approached about writing a tell-all about her mom and the very real murder she wrote. I did some immersion reading. Narrator is superb. #BooksAboutBooks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow.

I had to get well into this before I could decide if this was going to be a good but superficial story or turn into something a little deeper, darker and more intense. It ended up being more of the latter, better than I expected and a nice surprise. 4/5 stars

3.5/4 stars
This book is more than a 3.5 but less than a 4. I really enjoyed it but didn‘t completely love it. The characters weren‘t very likable. However, the plot was very interesting. I was kept guessing until the end on the mystery. I do recommend this book.

This gave me some vibes similar to Sharp Objects, although not nearly as dark and disturbing. The dynamic between mother and daughter was severe and at the heart of the mystery. And the story is really brought together by tension of the characters and the way they interact in the events leading up to the revelation of buried secrets. It kept me interested and I was satisfied with the ending!

Kaye Good to hear a review of this. I‘ve had it on my audible for quite awhile now but have yet to get to it. 6y

Mehso-so

Meg‘s estranged mother, Frances, reaches out after 3 years with a bday invitation & a note that a dear friend is ill. Meg gets home & her mother is gone, their friend hours from death.

With a push from her mother‘s conniving assistant, Meg travels to a small island Frances visited more than 40 years, and on which she found the spark for the novel that catapulted her into super-stardom. Meg is going to dig up hidden truths for a memoir. 👇🏻

mrozzz (Con‘d): I was less interested in the drama and more interested in how the excerpts from Frances‘ book, Kitten, were going to add up to a horrific end. There are many distractions adding heft to a book that needed streamlining. (edited) 6y

This was an Audible Deal of the Day a couple weeks ago. I thought this was an interesting story and I was pretty hooked for a while. It got a little confusing at the end. I felt like the narrator changed the main character's accent throughout and some of the other characters' accents were annoying. But I would read another by this author. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I really enjoyed this book. It had so many elements that kept me reading. The book within a book setup was awesome! Although the book is not a horror novel it is clearly influenced by classic King and other horror, which made me love it even more! A pick for sure!

Bailedbailed

Sigh. Another miss for me. This one I actually bailed on after getting just over halfway through. Thinking it was the audiobook narrator, I switched to the book version. Nope. At the halfway point I was beyond tired of hearing about jasmine scented skin, the beastly mother, the mosquitos...and had no idea where any of it was going. (And what was the point of "pie night"?) So rather than slog my way through, gave up. Hoping my next choices works!

This was a great mystery/suspense novel. Very southern gothic. Meg's mother wrote a horror novel that became a cult classic and people have been trying to solve the murder it was based on. Meg decides to write a tell all book and tries to solve it as well. Really good twists and suspenseful build up.

MyNamesParadise Glad to see another Litten give this book a Pick! 7y
