White Fang (Wisehouse Classics - With Original Illustrations)
White Fang (Wisehouse Classics - With Original Illustrations) | Jack London
WHITE FANG is a novel by American author Jack London (1876-1916) - and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of WHITE FANG is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. White Fang has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including a 1991 film starring Ethan Hawke. (more on: wisehouse-classics.com)

This book shows you how a wild wolf thinks and how its treatment affects its behavior. He takes more than his share of abuse. White Fang‘s dark experiences make him a violent outcast. He becomes the alpha, but at what price? Can a ravenous murderer find a happy ending? Some may be offended by the calling of humans gods from perspective of animals.

Yet another brutal Jack London book. Not as brutal as White Fang imo..but still.. I think maybe I'm not a Jack London fan. Lol. The story of a wolf-dog as he fights to survive all man and nature can throw at him. And it's a lot.

IuliaC I remember reading this as a child and was really heart-wrenching 2y

I‘m glad so many people enjoy this story. It probably deserves it‘s place as a classic. Unfortunately it didn‘t work for me. I found the writing very plain and I wasn‘t crazy about the P.O.V. Of the animal. I was sort of bored. 😑

ShyBookOwl I've never read this, but I've also never been into animal POVs so I'll take a hard pass here lol 2y

This is my first Jack London. I love animals and nature so, I suspected I would appreciate his work. I was apprehensive as the description mentioned White Fang‘s cruel owners. Reading about the abuse White Fang endured hurt my heart and it made me love him more. I was hopeful he would find a human that would love and treat him the way he deserved. This is an incredible story of endurance and perseverance; I loved it from beginning to end.#MountTBR

TEArificbooks London is one of my favorite American authors. Try Call of the Wild next. 3y

My first encounter with a full length book by Jack London. I've read his shorter novels, some twice. Now it was finally time to try his longer stories as well.

As we know from Jack London, he's sometimes hard to read. He shows us the hard life of the north, where kill or being killed matters. Sure, his descriptions of wolfish life isn't up-to-date anymore, but he was one of the first who really tried to get into animal behaviour. ⬇

Jari-chan Bloody and merciless is this book still worth reading. Except you can't handle animal deaths. Then don't read Jack London... I've had troubles myself as well...

TheAromaofBooks Yes, his books are rather nitty-gritty, but they are generally excellent stories. Have you ever read anything by Jim Kjelgaard? His books are more about Wilderness Men And Their Dogs but I grew up reading/loving them. They made me want to be a hermit in the wilds, living off the land 😂 Snow Dog and its sequel, Wild Trek, are probably my favorites. 3y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks I haven't heard about Kjelgaard by now, but I defenitely need to check him out! Thanks for the recommendation 😊 3y
TheAromaofBooks His books are a little dated (he basically never has female characters in his stories at all haha) but I have a soft spot for them. 3y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks Childhood memories, right? 😁 3y

There's an infamous story in my friend group about one of us going to see #ThePassionOfTheChrist and afterward, overhearing a fellow audience member say, "I haven't cried that hard since White Fang!" Even today, repeating that is guaranteed to make us burst out laughing, and these two things are now forever, incongruously, linked in my mind. ? #MoviesInApril #ThePassionOfChrist

Two beasts made to hate.
One gave in; One learned to love.
Love wins with a flash.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a compelling story showing that although a person‘s or Wolf-dog‘s life may shape him or her towards a morose, solitary and hateful disposition, it is never too late as long as someone is willing to extend a hand. Plus, I find London‘s portrayal of the wild and the domestic captivating.

Half of this book is basically a dictionary 😂 There are over 200 hundred definitions counting all of the footnotes and honestly I find myself distracted by finding all those little numbers while trying to finish a sentence. 😥

PerksOfBeingABookworm I hate excessive use of footnotes. At what point do you stop to read them? Mid sentence? End of sentence? End of paragraph? I‘ve used footnotes in papers before, but I kind of hate reading them. 6y

Definitely not a cuddly puppy story. Brutal lives and weather. While this was a decent survival story for teenagers, it felt lacking in many ways. We got a pretty shallow view of the characters. Good or evil or indifferent with very little background info.

Jack London has an incredible capacity to write from a dog's point of view. This story is about survival, the devastating effects of abuse, and the healing power of love.

White Fang is a wolf who is one-quarter dog. He grows up in the wild, learns its harsh lessons - eat or be eaten. Then he becomes a dog, and is beaten and abused, which makes him distrustful and savage. Until he encounters kindness and love - which slowly changes him. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of my girls brought her beat-up copy of The Call of the Wild & White Fang to me. She knows I'm not a fan of books from the POV of animals. (I don't know why. I've always found them soooo boring.)

She asked me to give Jack London another try. So here I am, with White Fang on print and audio.

Thankfully John Lee makes everything possible 🙌🏻 Years after I read this for the first time, I finally care about this book. This is so exciting to me.

And yet he remained somehow different from other dogs.
