Boys in the Trees: A Memoir | Carly Simon
43 posts | 35 read | 44 to read
Simon's memoir reveals her remarkable life, beginning with her storied childhood as the third daughter of Richard L. Simon, the co-founder of publishing giant Simon & Schuster, her musical debut as half of The Simon Sisters performing folk songs with her sister Lucy in Greenwich Village, to a meteoric solo career that would result in 13 top 40 hits, including the #1 song "You're So Vain." She was the first artist in history to win a Grammy Award, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, for her song "Let the River Run" from the movie Working Girl. The memoir recalls a childhood enriched by music and culture, but also one shrouded in secrets that would eventually tear her family apart. Simon brilliantly captures moments of creative inspiration, the sparks of songs, and the stories behind writing "Anticipation" and "We Have No Secrets" among many others. Romantic entanglements with some of the most famous men of the day fueled her confessional lyrics, as well as the unraveling of her storybook marriage to James Taylor.

Yeah, we got so close, so close to love
But you had to go and mess it up
Was it all too much or just not enough?🎶

Carly and James had a troubled relationship which, according to Carly, had much to do with James‘ heroin and mistresses. They were #soclose to love once...

Cathythoughts James Taylor! ♥️💔the music of my youth. I never knew he had this addiction... troubled soul .. & such beautiful music 6y

👋🏻🎧 It pains me, but I have to bail on this audiobook. The guitar portions, of which there are many, are too loud and really distract from Simon‘s narration. I‘m interested in the story, but this audio is terrible. Will pick it back up in print some time.

gradcat You know it never occurred to me that you would have music in the audiobook. I can see how you might prefer the print version in a book such as this one, especially if it becomes too distracting. 6y
Cathythoughts Don‘t know about this book ... but Carly Simon !!! James Taylor ... I‘m 17 again !! Thankyou for the memories ✨✨✨ 6y
britt_brooke @gradcat Occasionally, an author might have a few seconds of music between essays or something, but this one has it in the middle of chapters and for extended periods. Distracting and annoying. Had it been at a lower volume than her voice (which was reading the story), it would‘ve been much better. 6y
gradcat That would have bugged me for sure. I‘m glad you posted this...thanks! 6y

I enjoyed this. There are some juicy stories. My only complaint is that I did the audio because she reads it and every time the music comes on you struggle to hear her voice. Very annoying. You think they would have noticed.

britt_brooke I just started this on audio and the music is driving me mad. 6y

#MarchIntoThe70s I read this memoir last year and was completely enchanted by Carly Simon. She led a very colorful life & her memoir reflects all of her highs & lows. And big reveal #YoureSoVain was NOT just about Warren Beatty. According to Carly, there were 3 boys who she focused on when writing this song but she only felt comfortable publicly mentioning WB. And did you know Carly‘s dad was Simon from the Simon & Schuster Publishing House.

TrishB Great nerdy facts 👍🏻 6y
SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime how interesting, i never knew the Simon & Schuster thing... and I'm named after her lol My sister's name is Taylor too, from when Carly was married to James Taylor 6y
Cinfhen I love that story @SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime your parents are awesome 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 6y
Coleen I read this on audio. Loved it! 6y
Kimberlone I always thought the song was supposed to be about James Taylor...but I guess there‘s always been speculation about who the song is really about 6y

I am listening to the audiobook. As Carly Simon herself is reading it, it's a little more interesting. She adds music and singing to her reading.
It is a sex, rock and roll story. Interesting if you're interested.

I enjoyed reading about Carly Simon‘s life. While reading the hardcover book 📖, I listened to her music 🎶 on my Amazon Echo. I think in some spots it got confusing with the year and would at times go forward and then back in time. I‘ve always been a great fan of hers so I would have liked this book no matter what. Lots of good and juicy bits that I never would have known about Carly Simon and the high profile men she shared encounters 🔥⚡️

Carly Simon and James Taylor, among others were the soundtrack of my youth. James was my first concert, and I pretended I was Carly on a daily basis. I lived this book. No not a typo. I also loved it. Spending a few summers on the cape and the vineyard, I felt this book. The audiobook gave us her sultry voice, with a musical score. ❤️ love doesn‘t always last, except for Carly. And James.

I really relished this frank, candid memoir artistically written by Carly Simon. Both her early life and later years proved to be enchanting and spellbinding. Her encounters with Warren Beatty, Mick Jaguar, Cat Stevens, Sean Connery and Kris Kristofferson made for an absorbing read. I did find parts overwritten and redundant and at times I wondered how Carly Simon was able to recall so many details & exact conversations. Still an engaging read.

Suet624 Two gorgeous people. 😁 7y

Bostonmomx2 She may have kept a diary and is how she can recall so much. If I was having “encounters” with men like that, I‘d sure be writing that shit down 😂😂😂 7y
Cinfhen Ha!! She definitely kept a diary because she refers to it often but I'm amazed at the amount of precise detail and recall... @Bostonmomx2 I can't remember the alarm code for my front door 🙄 (edited) 7y
BookwormM Does she reveal who You‘re So Vain is about?? 7y
DebinHawaii I saw this one on audio through the library a while back and was hoping it was good. 👍👍Stacked it. 7y
Cinfhen She does but she doesn't @BookwormM apparently she is referencing three different men and she only names one in the book.....warren Beatty 😉 7y
Cinfhen I'm glad u stacked this @DebinHawaii I think you'll appreciate all the stories behind her famous songs and she's a great storyteller💜 7y
AlaMich I always wonder that about memoirs, especially celebrity memoirs. I can‘t remember conversations from last week, but they all seem to have astonishing memories, even if they did keep journals. And most of the celebrities seem to have done copious amounts of drugs, which can‘t have helped the memory. 7y
Cinfhen Right @AlaMich it's hard to believe all those words were spoken but I'm willing to accept it and move along 😉 7y

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am actually excited to commute to work today so I can listen to this audible pick! I heard that not only is this book super juicy, but that she is also a great narrator. I mean it sounds like it has it all- an inside look at the publishing world (as in the Simon and Schuster publishing house) plus all her insight into the rock and folk scenes of the 60s-80s. Cannot wait!

WanderingBookaneer Have you listened to 8y

So far enjoying this more than the memoirs of Jewel or Julie Andrews. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book and I like her pacing. She doesn't spend too much time on any one incident but gives enough detail to reveal the essential and conceal points to be developed later.

I loved this book. Carly came of age musically along with so many other music legends. I admit that I loved reading about her relationships and love affairs. And then, of course, the magic of her love affair and marriage to James Taylor, and their struggles to make it work. A sweet, easy read.
