The Son | Philipp Meyer

Don't get discouraged if you're confused by all the changes in point of view and time period. It is tough to track, but well worth it. Incisive and so, so honest. Meyer hits the core of human nature for sure. The bad and the ugly much more so than the good.

McCann weaves characters into a believable tapestry. They are just closely enough related, yet also distinct unto themselves. Reminiscent of Jennifer Egan's novel A Visit from the Goon Squad and of City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg. I like this one better than the other two, though.

More than halfway through this. A good balance of suspense, character development and parallel storylines.

Just started this and it is so, so weird. In the best way. How does Ness make this world so believable? Unique point of view and a bizarre setting but great characters thus far.

About 2/3 of the way through the book and she's finally getting to her relationship with JT!

Loved! Great YA fiction but more importantly great fiction. Pair it with Salinger, Fitzgerald, Hemingway. This novel was totally different from We All Looked Up. It showcases how versatile and culturally literate the author is.

So far enjoying this more than the memoirs of Jewel or Julie Andrews. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book and I like her pacing. She doesn't spend too much time on any one incident but gives enough detail to reveal the essential and conceal points to be developed later.

Listened to the first hour and would recommend, just not the book for me.

Reading this a little bit at a time and now 2/3 of the way finished. Part of me wants to quarantine myself until it's done. The other part appreciates all the little reading breaks. Yeah... In an ideal world: shut myself away. Real world: snack on smaller portions.

Just downloaded this audiobook as a TBR. It sounds so odd it might be good. Will see.

The ending was a bit too stretched out, given that this is not really a suspenseful book. I loved how the book parallels the relationships between the older couple in their thirties who were once high school sweethearts and the awkward escapades of Willow and her suitors.

#chathamhsreads #read4fun Even though Carolina, the main character and the story's narrator is only twelve, the book is not just for middle grades. The story sequences told by the grandfather were a little much; they could have been edited down, but other than that a beautiful book.

This book gives sibling rivalry a whole new definition. Does every family have a black sheep and a golden child?!
