Cherry | Mary Karr
13 posts | 32 read | 18 to read
From Mary Karr comes this gorgeously written, often hilarious story of her tumultuous teens and sexual coming-of-age. Picking up where the bestselling The Liars' Club left off, Karr dashes down the trail of her teen years with customary sass, only to run up against the paralyzing self-doubt of a girl in bloom. Fleeing the thrills and terrors of adolescence, she clashes against authority in all its forms and hooks up with an unforgettable band of heads and bona-fide geniuses. Parts of Cherry will leave you gasping with laughter. Karr assembles a self from the smokiest beginnings, delivering a long-awaited sequel that is both "bawdy and wise" (San Francisco Chronicle).

So grateful not to have grown up a girl in East Texas in the 1970s. So grateful Mary Karr did. Her voice cuts through the teenage wasteland, drilling through the mist of sex, drugs, and confusion to emerge with the story of a young woman trying to find her place in the world and a sense of self.

Here‘s the problem with memoirs: events are limited to reality and I don‘t know you, so why do I care?
I love the language in this one; maybe I‘ll make it through. #bookClub #ReadWomen

CindyE09 That‘s one of my problem with memoirs too. They are only about things that actually happened and thus can almost never be as exciting as fiction. Plus I don‘t care for all that self reflection. 7y
ReviewsMayVary @CindyE09 agreed. It either sounds whiney or self-aggrandizing. 7y

Karr's writing is beautiful, gritty, realistic, and romantic. Her prose is like good poetry. Her focus is where she puts her attention. Cherry itself is unique because it delves deeply into the psychology and circumstance of being poor, white, and southern. Previously, I‘ve only ever read about that world from an outsider‘s perspective. Mary Karr, in her...

"The trick in that town was getting through a night at all without stalling in the sludge of your own thoughts."

#MaryKarr on #audio is perfection. She's smart and gritty – a combination I'm drawn to. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. At this point, I'd be awed by her grocery list.

dylanisreading I would happily read her to do lists every day. I love her writing so much. 7y
britt_brooke @Bianca I love her descriptions. 💚 7y

Now that I'm listening to more audiobooks, I decided to give #Audible a try. Plus, my #Overdrive doesn't have #Cherry on audio and I love listening to #MaryKarr read her stories. So, hooray for the first book being free! 🎧📖👏🏻 #BlameitonLitsy

aschermetz I love my Audible subscription. Do you have a kindle? A lot of times you can get the companion audiobooks really cheap when you buy the kindle version. It's how I built my library without using a lot of credits! 7y
Birdsong28 Sign up for the Audible daily deal as well so if you don't decide to carry on the subscription you can still buy cheap Audiobooks. You can still have access to your books if do end it as well. 📖📚 7y
britt_brooke @aschermetz I do have a kindle - thanks for the tip!! 7y

panache113 I love my audible account. I've had it since about 2008. :) worth every penny. 7y
britt_brooke @panache113 I'm liking it so far! 🙌🏻 7y
MarriedtoMrT I'm thinking of starting my free trial as well all the get the audio for The Dire King that is not available to borrow from my library yet. I don't know if I would use it enough to continue after that, though. 7y
britt_brooke @MarriedtoMrT I don't know if I'll use it enough or not either. I'm happy there's a free trial. 7y
Bluebird Enjoy! I love my audible subscription. They frequently have audio books on sale for $4.95 (for subscribers only). The selection offered is not the always the best, but I usually find 1-2 that I had previously considered buying-but not for the price of a full credit. 7y
Lreads Have you tried Hoopla? Some libraries use Hoopla along with Overdrive. 7y
britt_brooke @Bluebird Good to know - Thanks! 7y
britt_brooke @ReadsWithTea My library doesn't use Hoopla. 🙁 7y

Lately, I can't get enough Mary Karr (or memoirs in general). #ConstantCraving #AugustGrrrl

ApoptyGina69 I just finished The Liar's Club in June. Taking a breather until Cherry, but I read The Glass Castle in between. Rugged! 7y
britt_brooke @ApoptyGina69 I read The Liars' Club earlier this month, am currently listening to Lit, then picked this up today. I just love her writing! I need to check out her poetry sometime, too. 7y
Cinfhen I love memoirs/ NF too #RealLifeisStrangerThanFiction 7y

Psychoanalytic theory would label this pecker envy and seek to smack me on the nose for it. To that I‘d say, o please. Of actual johnsons I had little awareness. What I coveted was privilege.

Reading this a little bit at a time and now 2/3 of the way finished. Part of me wants to quarantine myself until it's done. The other part appreciates all the little reading breaks. Yeah... In an ideal world: shut myself away. Real world: snack on smaller portions.
