Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo | Taylor Jenkins Reid
From Taylor Jenkins Reid, "a genius when it comes to stories about life and love" (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress's relentless rise to the top--the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds--revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love--Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways. Written with Reid's signature talent for "creating complex, likable characters" (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means--and what it takes--to face the truth.

I really liked this book. Evelyn chooses Monique to write her story as she dictates it to her. Evelyn has truly lived a remarkable life as a movie star. She tells Monique about her 7 husbands and how she came to marry each of them. Underlying this is a forbidden love that Evelyn carries throughout her life. As the story is winding down we find out that there is a huge connection between Evelyn and Monique‘s story.

Evelyn Hugo will do mostly anything - and anyone - for power in fame and security in money. She employs a particular writer to coin her biography because there is an underlying related item that ties them together - the death of the writers father. Loved the friendship between Harry and Evelyn and everyone deserved to have a great love like Evelyn and celia st James!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think this is my favorite TJR book so far! I had been told multiple times it would be different than what I expected, and it really was in so many ways.
The three audiobook narrators were excellent & made the three different story parts distinct.
It felt so real, I caught myself almost Googling Evelyn Hugo & her movies multiple times and then had to remind myself it was all fiction.
Loved it!

I enjoyed this one. Sometimes it felt like the plot was going in circles, but it was a good story with believable emotions. Sometimes the main character in the present-day storyline didn‘t make sense to me—she was a bit inconsistent. Overall I liked it!

It was a gripping tale about the traps of Hollywood and how Evelyn did what she had to do to get where she wanted to be. It does pose the question of whether a man would be judged in quite the same way. For all it was fictitious you could imagine real Hollywood starlets today facing the same sexist attitudes and challenges. It's a story of friendship, passion, drive, love and loss. Worth a read.

After having read three other books by this author, I finally got a chance to read this one. After selling countless copies of this in my days as a bookseller, I now know what all the fuss was about. What can I say but wow! This author is a great storyteller, The characters, the setting and the plot were all wonderful. I really enjoyed it. 5/5 stars!

Interesting premise and plot. The initial impression of the titular character is of a smart, driven woman using all of her assets to become a movie star at the height of Hollywood glam. The reality is more nuanced and complex. This 4⭐️ pick thoughtfully delves into important topics and offers a strong cast of characters.

Evelyn Hugo is a strong and badass woman who quickly learnt how to grab life by the balls and take things for herself, make herself great. She also hurt a lot of people on the way to fame. I think her story is interesting and educational for all women.
The ending wasn't a huge 'omg' for me, but it was a nice read.

I‘m so late to this party that the universe really does not need my hot take on this crowd favourite. I went in expecting it to like not love it, and was pleasantly surprised. It‘s a really compelling story about a life that appears simple and privileged on the surface, but is much more complex than this below the surface. Its structure is a compelling framework for this very character driven narrative. I found it a pretty immersive read

This was not the book I thought it was going to be, in the best possible way! I thought it was going to be a generic Hollywood chick-lit book but it goes deeper and more meaningfully into love, relationships and identity in a way that really strikes you. A must read.

This was a reread (my roomies were supposed to read it at the same time but they broke my heart in pieces and did not) and let me just say this is a truly amazing book. Dare I say it deserves to be considered a classic eventually?? The love story is so beautiful and touching and unexpected. Taylor Jenkins Reid is the queen of defying expectations and this book is her absolute best work. LOVE

4✨ What an amazingly captivating story. Evelyn reaches out to a random writer to publish her life‘s story. The one that the public eye never saw from her famous actress career. While she did have 7 husbands there is more to her story and a mysterious connection to Monique, the author of her future book. I went back and forth on what I should rate it because certain elements in the end I don‘t agree with.⬇️

Roary47 However, it was an edge of your seat type of read. Plus the thing I didn‘t agree with I understand would have been the end result no matter what happened. #SnowedIn @PuddleJumper @Clwojick 11mo

This book took me by surprise. Took me by it's bare hands and pinned me with devastation, surprise, anguish, heartbreak and just pure awe at the characters created. I forgot many times that Evelyn Hugo does not exist. That this is not her biography. This is just fiction. Unrelenting, raw, unflinching fiction.

I love having fabric napkins for dinner parties but because they get trashed so easily I only buy them from op shops. They were only $2 too!

While the story was very good it took me a bit to get into it. I agree with another reviewer that it kind of dragged and Monique's narrator sounded to old for her part. But it did pick up and was a very interesting read for me. There is a lot going on but not so much that you will get lost. Evelyn's words were wonderful. Her narrator did a great job and the story that she is telling is both interesting and at times heartbreaking.

I came across so many great quotes while reading this book. Here are a few of my favorites.

No haiku review for this one as I can't even fathom trying to describe this book in less than 20 words, but it's definitely at the top of my reading list this year.

I also just reached my yearly goodreads goal of 120 books!! I've never read this many in a year before, and I'm still going strong! 🎉

I loved how TJR uses the media snippets to tell the “public” side of the story. It contrast so well with the “private” story and makes the reader feel as though they‘re in on all the secrets. I thought TJR brought to life the glamour of Hollywood while still showing the “truths”. Really enjoyed it.
