The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story | Susan Hill
The classic ghost story by Susan Hill: a chilling tale about a menacing spectre haunting a small English town. Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming London solicitor who is sent to Crythin Gifforda faraway town in the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causewayto attend the funeral and settle the affairs of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Mrs. Drablows house stands at the end of the causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but Kipps is unaware of the tragic secrets that lie hidden behind its sheltered windows. The routine business trip he anticipated quickly takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and imagesa rocking chair in a deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a childs scream in the fog, and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black. Psychologically terrifying and deliciously eerie, The Woman in Black is a remarkable thriller of the first rate.

I've read it. It made me aware of parallels between this story and some others I've read (by other authors and published later).

The writing was good.

Maybe all the hype about it had me expecting more spooky, more haunting.

Anyway, I've read it. I've checked a box. 😉

Leniverse I think I liked it more than you did. I'm a sucker for that style of writing 😂 It wasn't hard to join the dots, but I enjoyed the journey. 1mo

We settled on seeing a matinee in case it was very scary so that we‘d be able to debrief over drinks and dinner before going home…

This is a very well written homage to gothic horror. But it did feel formulaic at times. Also I don‘t do well with child harm in books. It created a great discussion at bookclub and on the whole we decided we preferred the theatre show but liked it more than the film.

My head is already slipping into the witching season, and I‘m itching to plan my October reading so I need book recs from you guys! My favorite is dark, gothic ghost stories/haunted house stories, the scarier the better. I don‘t care if they‘re period or contemporary, but I can‘t do any kind of gore or body horror. I LOVE Simone St. James, and the tagged book was my favorite spooky story last year…

shortsarahrose The tagged was my favorite creepy read from the past year (the audiobook is good if you like those, too) 1y
Larkken The tagged is my favorite Kingfisher and (I think) her creepiest novel - but it‘s a take on The Willows and not a haunted house story. Stacking The Woman in Black, though! (edited) 1y

I am easily scared, so there's that, but this is a short & very well-constructed ghost story with a keen sense of atmosphere. Because of how it builds up & how it ends, it kind of worms its way into your mind & stays there. Less overt horror & more psychological accumulation of dread & terror; a "classic" ghost story, in a sense. Big shout-out to Spider, the dog, without whom I might have also passed out during some of the more intense moments.

Creepy and such an eerie atmosphere. The writing was compelling and creepy, the descriptions were dark, gothic and had a continuous flow that made me binge read the whole book. The plot was a mixture of sad, scary and mysterious. I liked the different creepy ongoing and the haunting of the woman in black, her story is a sad one full of anguish. The ending was unexpected and entirely thrillerish, I overall greatly enjoyed this classic.

I have to say I was hesitant to pick up The Woman in Black because so many people compared it to The Haunting of Hill House, which I didn‘t love. But The Woman in Black is really good. Susan Hill‘s writing style is perfect for a horror novel. There was always this foreboding feeling hanging around. And the unexpected ending took if from a four star read to a five star read.

This was a fun little gothic story that felt very much like a combination of The Turn of the Screw and The Haunting of Hill House.

It was written in 1983, but feels like something something straight out of the Victorian era. From its language, setting, framing, motifs, tropes -everything- felt like a modern study on the Victorian gothic. There wasn‘t anything too scary, but the part that put a dog in danger had me grabbing my arm-rest!

I loved how this story began; a Victorian Christmas Eve around a fire telling ghost stories. Enjoyable story of a young attorney who travels to a small village to handle the estate of an elderly woman who recently passed. Best of all, he borrows a new friend‘s dog for company while he stays in the creepy mansion to sort through papers. The book is better than the movie. 😉🎥 #MountTBR

This is a spooky, chilling ghost story, and enjoyable if you don‘t dig to deep.

But I kept having all kinds of questions. It‘s written in Victorian gothic style, but there seems to be motor cars and electricity. And how did they get electricity to such an isolated spot as Eel Marsh House, w/out electrical lines or generators? The whole setting just seemed a bit off, time period wise.

Rating 3.5 /5
The Woman in Black is my first novel from the horror genre. So I'm doubtful on how to give a review of this. The story is about a young solicitor Arthur Kipps who has to travel to a rural village in England to sort out legal papers of a dead client in her middle-of-nowhere house where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman. Unheeded warnings, strange sightings and sounds, hauntings, you get the drill.

olivia.ferz Now this is a traditional gothic story set in the Edwardian era, written in 1983. So the language of the story does reflect the time period. But I felt like the author rambles on too much. The story isn't what you call scary. Was it creepy? Sure. Was I spooked out? Sure. But I wasn't terrified or kept awake in the dark thinking if the woman in black is out to get me. 4y
olivia.ferz Though the book was a bit slow for me, Susan Hill does spin a beautifully sad and atmospheric ghost story. I loved the tragic backstory of the ghost which was so perfectly fitted to the story. I felt so sad that she had to go through all that pain and suffering while she was alive that I could understand the reason for her hauntings and killings. The ending of the book was even more violently tragic and heartbreaking. Overall,it was a good book.

This is a great little ghost story. A short read but rather suspenseful and written in a Victorian style, this book packs quite a punch for how small it is. I really enjoyed reading this one. The ending however was so very sad and ended rather abruptly. Other than that it was a very enjoyable read.

This little book is supposed to be a horror but it‘s too beautifully written to be all that scary. The imagery of the English countryside and daily life was just what I needed to hold me over until I can visit my boyfriend again in England ✈️ Hill‘s writing is so dreamy and I was feeling so nostalgic to go back that I was actually like down to live in this haunted house.

bookgem I think there is a movie from this book. Am not sure... The Harry Potter actor (oh no, don't hate me I can't remember his name) Radcliff? 😬 It was good. Creepy, dark gothic story. 5y
