I chose this lovely illustrated edition of Tennyson‘s The Lady Of Shalott for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead and thoroughly enjoyed it. I already have several passages memorized from watching the 1985 Anne of Green Gables movie over and over again starting when I was 9😆. This poem is so Anne, if that makes sense. Haunting, romantic and melancholy. Thanks for organizing @BarbaraJean ! 5⭐️

TorieStorieS I was obsessed with that adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, too!! My mom has a weird DVD version but it will not play on our blue ray player and I haven‘t seen it in sooooo long!!! 😭 1mo
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS I became obsessed with these movies when I first watched them with my grandma when I was 9! I have the DVDs but they skip and are kind of expensive to replace but I still have one DVD player in the house that plays VHS tapes also so I have to whip out those if I want to watch it. I remember saving my allowance money to buy them back in the day when they were $25 each! 😅 I never get tired of those movies. Gilbert was my first crush! 1mo
TorieStorieS I used to borrow my aunt‘s VHS tapes but I am not sure where they ended up! I wish they were streaming somewhere! And yes, Gilbert Blythe was always the best!! The book was the first book to make me cry and I do re-read the book pretty often! 1mo

JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS I still remember the first time I watched Anne of Avonlea, not knowing what was going to happen. I was so scared they were going to let Gilbert die and was on the edge of my seat! 😅 1mo
BarbaraJean I\'m pretty sure that the 1985 Anne miniseries is where I first became familiar with this poem! And yes, this poem is SO Anne. Can\'t you just see how Tennyson must have influenced her and the \“Story Club\“?! 1mo

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead #LMMAdjacent - The Lady of Shalott and Lancelot & Elaine discussion

Could either of these poems be seen as an allegory?

What themes do you see that would have been relevant for women in the mid-1800s?

How might either text contain parallels for women today?

TheAromaofBooks I like this question but am not sure how to put my answer into words 😂 I\'ll continue to contemplate and come back. 2mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks 😂 I have to admit I looked up some study questions for both poems—I hadn\'t even thought about parallels to Victorian women until I did that! One of the study guides talked about how Elaine\'s confinement in the tower could be seen as the control placed on Victorian women (keeping them sheltered and pure, etc.) and her looking out at Lancelot would be defying societal norms, followed by consequences (the fallen woman always dies!)⬇ (edited) 1mo
BarbaraJean (Cont\'d) All of that made SO much sense, whether that was intentional by Tennyson or not. And it got me thinking about parallels to today, with expectations that are placed on women and what happens when we don\'t conform. I mean, I\'ve never been shut up in a tower and told I had to just keep weaving & not look out the window, but people sure had opinions when I was still single at age 35 and they sure have opinions about me not having kids. 1mo

She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces thro‘ the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look‘d down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack‘d from side to side;
“The curse is come upon me,” cried
the Lady of Shalott.

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I‘ve loved this Tennyson poem for so long—I think I became familiar with it from watching the Anne of Green Gables miniseries when I was about 10 years old. Later, I became obsessed with the Pre-Raphaelites, who were also captivated by Tennyson‘s Lady of Shallot. Then in college, I fell in love with this Loreena McKennitt song, the lyrics of which are all taken directly from Tennyson‘s poem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxFF03IbIlY 2mo

"Lying, robed in snowy white
That loosely flew to left and right -
The leaves upon her falling light -
Thro' the noises of the night
She floated down to Camelot:
And as the boat-head wound along
The willowy hills and fields among,
They heard her singing her last song,
The Lady of Shalott."

The endpapers of this edition are so well done. Elaine expiring in the boat which resembles a coffin, bearing her to her death & the indifference of Lancelot.

"The Lady of Shallot" is a short poem, but full of romantic Arthurian images of castles, enchantments, and a doomed damsel.
Tennyson took Malory's tragic story of Elaine of Astolat's unrequited love for Lancelot, changing the knight's churlishness toward Elaine into mere obliviousness, but managing to retain the dreadful sense of the inevitable working out of the curse of a death foretold. I'm tempted to a re-read of "The Idylls of the King" soon.

TrishB That‘s a lovely copy ♥️ 5y

Looking for books for a reading challenge, I found this Tennyson copy on my shelf. It's barely held together, and it is missing pages, including the title page, but it does contain The Lady of Shalott. ❤️

It also has an inscription - though I can't quite read the date. (Is that a 4, 7, or 9?)

I remember concretely things I memorized in school, e.g. the definition of "synecdoche." As an adult, I would like to add to my repertoire of knowledge bits by trying to memorize a little something each day. No rhyme or reason to the selection, just pieces I find interesting, pithy or otherwise noteworthy. Hopefully it will be fun, and maybe a little useful.

Starting with a doozy, The Lady of Shalott, a stanza at time (1/20)

This was the page today (I'm a bit behind) on my "Tiny Pleasures" calendar.

I don't know if it's what they meant by "transports," but a verse that I love, and that takes me to a boat with Anne Shirley, is the Lady of Shalott.

I dramatically read it to my husband on a road trip. Fortunately, we're still married. ?

I'm curious - what would you choose as "a verse that transports?"

#SparklingMayBookishDreams #day6 #Poetry This is one of my favourite poems by Lord Tennyson. I first found this poem through Dame Agatha of all people, her novel, The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side is named after a stanza of this. There's another two parts, it's a very long poem, more of a sonnet. One of Flavia DeLuce novels is also named for part of this poem, I Am Half Sick Of Shadows.

Bibliogeekery I've loved this poem since I was young! ❤️❤️ 8y

Laalaleighh This was referenced in the book I just read and it reminded me of how much I loved this poem when I was growing up. 8y
Laalaleighh Also it reminds me a bit of Platos allegory of the cave, but with awareness that the shadows aren't real. "I am half sick of shadows" is such a great line. 8y
Lizpixie @Laalaleighh The Forgotten Garden is my favourite Kate Morton book. I can't wait for her next book in June. 8y
Lizpixie @Laalaleighh the whole poem has this beautiful cadence to it, when you read it aloud it almost forces you to perform it. Some of the lines are just gorgeous, I love "out flew the web and opened wide, the mirror crack'd from side to side, the curse has come upon me cried, the lady of shalott." 8y
Laalaleighh @lizpixie I immediately purchased the house at Riverton when I finished it! Didn't know she had a new one coming out. Also, June. Ha I read that and thought- aww I have to wait til summer?! Then realized it's MAY. This year is whizzing by. I agree it's so beautifully written. Makes me want to read more Tennyson. This might be the only one I know. 8y

@thegirlwiththelibrarybag got me thinking about paintings- this one is one of my favourite paintings and poems The Lady of Shalott, it's so beautiful and sad. Ophelia is another favourite of mine as well, I love paintings that are inspired by literature, so I wanted to ask of Litsy if anyone else has some favourites I could put up on my walls?

Bibliogeekery Love this one too! The poem and the painting! 8y
mllemay This is one of my favorites as well! Similarly, John Singer Sargent's painting "Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth" is very striking. 8y
brendanmleonard I love art like this - there's a lot of art from the Victorian era that's inspired by folk and fairy tales and literature. I think the PreRaphialite Brotherhood has some corkers. I also really love the Wyeths, who did fantastic paintings and covers for books like Treasure Island in the early 20th century. 8y

samwinchester90 Pretty sure the only reason I knew about this was because of Anne of Green Gables. 8y

TheLondonBookworm @mllemay Hadn't seen that one before, striking is definitely the way to describe that face, wow. 8y
TheLondonBookworm @brendanmleonard Fairytale illustrations tend to be right up my street, Arthur Rackham's work is brilliant! I hadn't heard of the Wyeth's though, they did some beautiful paintings. Thanks for pointing them out :) 8y
TheLondonBookworm @samwinchester90 I have to confess, I've never actually read Anne of Green Gables! Is it too late to give it a go? :) 8y
Hobbinol I love the Brotherhood too. The Pre-Raphaelites can really coax the tone straight out of a poem and onto a canvass: Shakespeare, Keats, Tennyson. And I love Wallis' painting of the poet Chatterton (on Ackroyd's book cover about the poet). And then you have modern works: Charles Demuth's Figure 5 in Gold, based on the William Carlos Williams poem-- this was the first piece I thought of when I read your post. You are too much fun! 8y
LiteratiCafe Love this poem and the song it inspired by The Band Perry. 8y
TheLondonBookworm @Hobbinol Wow, sounds like you have a lot of knowledge on this! I love the Wallis painting I remember seeing a really interesting documentary on that a while ago. Fascinating stuff, I've never seen the Figure 5 before but it sets off the poem perfectly doesn't it! 8y
TheLondonBookworm @LiteratiCafe No way, as in 'if I die young'? I had no idea that's where they got the Inspiration but you can really see it in the music video now I think about it. 8y
LiteratiCafe Yes @TheLondonBookworm "if I die young" was inspired by this, it was in an interview they gave. Even then painting works with the song. 8y
