I enjoyed a good 3/4 of this, which I think will suit fans of Connie Willis - there are some obvious parallels with her time-traveling historian novels.
I don't know why the ending fell a little flat for me. I liked the examination of time travel consequences, but maybe it just lacked depth, and the main characters lacked a little curiosity.
A good fit for the 2 time periods prompt. @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @alisiakae

About half way through this book which i think may work for Connie Willis fans. Am I the only one shipping Liam and Henry? #timetravel #fantasy #romance
Background WIP: Wildberry Half Circle in Hobbii Wheel of Alpaca. #crochet #litsycrafters
I really wanted to love this novel - how cool would it be to turn travel and meet Jane Austen!! - but it just was not for me. I did not really care for the MC, and that probably has some to do with my overall so-so feeling of the book. Henry‘s portrayal in the novel also seemed a bit callous - I understand he liked a good time, but it seemed a bit too much. Who knows, though??? Finally took the time to finish this for #PemberLittens .
This one was a surprise, I enjoyed it. It has low rating but for me was interesting. The end maybe was cheesy but I am happy how it ended. I liked the idea to go back in time. I don‘t expected less if you go back in time with this knowledge, technology and experiences. It would be so difficult to control yourself, to follow rules and traditions of that time knowing what would happen. I liked that in their return, things were altered.3.5⭐️
I needed some time to think about this review. Overall I enjoyed the premise, even though the characters got on my nerves. But I think the ending ultimately soured my impression. I wanted more explanation about the future and it all just seemed rushed. I'm glad I read this with the #pemberlittens though, it was enjoyable to share the experience with everyone. Thanks @StayCurious for hosting
Thank you #permberlittens for the read-a-long. It was a clever idea, but I found the overall pace very slow. An intriguing ending that I think was the right one, some of the choices made by the characters did have me sighing in frustration.
Also, I keep comparing Rachel to Irene from The Invisible Library series. Unfavourably.
This book had what I thought was a very interesting premise. Rachel and Liam travel back to meet Jane Austen and recover a manuscript of The Watsons as well as some letters between Jane and her sister. It seems like a good idea, but I never really got attached to any of the characters and it sort of felt like the author made it up as she went along. ⭐️⭐️⭐️pick for the idea.
#pemberlittens
A book involving both time travel and Jane Austen? Sounded fascinating, but I found the storyline to be as disconnected as the concept. The plot moved in strange directions. And I was surprised to find that I disliked some of the Austen family members, which was disappointing. I also disliked many of the choices the main characters made. #PemberLittens @StayCurious #Booked2023 @Cinfhen @alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage #UKRoadTrip @jenniferw88
So much potential here! The ending was quite unsatisfying and felt unfinished to me. It is in need of a good epilogue. I spent nearly 400 pages invested in these two MCs, only to not be given a proper “This is how it went afterwards….”!?!?! Just seems unfair to the readers. But that is just my humble opinion. #Pemberlittens #LitsyLoveReads
#Pemberlittens Ch.20: I‘m left a bit in limbo - half satisfied and half unsatisfied at this ending. I feel sad that they‘ve lost where they came from - but on the other hand maybe their world wasn‘t so great. I wish we had learned more about it. I wish there had been an epilogue - set a few years later to tell us how they are doing living their alt-lives. 👇
Rachel & Liam are part of a mission to go back in time to 1815 to befriend Jane Austen: to recover lost letters between Jane and her sister Cassandra, & to get the manuscript of her novel The Watsons. They have to be very careful not to be found out as not actually being who they say they are, and they have to be careful to not change anything that would alter history.
This was between a pick and a so-so, but the premise was really interesting.
This has been languishing on my bookshelf for years so I‘m glad I finally got a chance to read it. It was by turns entertaining and infuriating, but reading it alongside my fellow #Pemberlittens made it infinitely more enjoyable. @StayCurious Thank you for being our fearless leader for this wild ride! #Pantone2023 #OysterMushroom #JoyousJanuary #SharReadathon #LitsyLove @Clwojick @Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I finished this and can't wait to discuss the last chapter tomorrow.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book with the whole time travel and mission. However, it kind of lost me when a romance between the characters was forced. 3 ⭐️

#Pemberlittens Ch.19: Rachel is reunited with Liam and all seems to be well. Except that Liam proposes that they stay in that time - considering they‘ve altered history enough that they don‘t know what they will be returning too, it‘s not a terrible idea. He wants to marry. He admits to loving Rachel for a long time. But will she admit her feelings for him? Yes - after nursing him through typhus (that he got from lice - gross) 👇
I did not love this book- there were plot lines that were very problematic for me- and had everything to do with the two main characters and how they were written than the story writing itself. But I‘m really glad I read this with #pemberlittens and am very appreciative to @StayCurious for hosting.
#Pemberlittens Ch.18 well “the 💩 hath hitteth the fan-eth”- to borrow a quote from 10 Things I Hate About You. In a world where your connections mean everything, to be found out as fraudulent liars - or even to have doubts cast on your honour - can collapse everything you‘ve spent time building 👇
#Pemberlittens Ch.17: so Liam must have a better way of spinning a tale because Jane takes his word and seems totally fine with it. When Rachel alludes to Jane‘s early death, Jane wants to go back with them. I wonder how that would go over and if it‘s even possible. I also wonder if Jane has too much iron in her blood. I think that‘s one reason bleeding her might help.
Okay, I couldn't resist and had to finish this one yesterday!! I had SUCH mixed feelings about this book! I loved the concept and actually felt like it was executed fairly well. But I never liked Rachel and actually disliked her more as the book went on, especially as her relationship with Liam (which I never believed; their chemistry level was in the negative numbers) developed and they both acted like the fact that Liam was engaged was not ⬇️
#Pemberlittens Ch.16: so Jane is quite Ill- to the point where Rachel worries she‘ll die earlier than she should. As she nurses Jane, she sometimes drugs her with laudanum. It is during these moments that Rachel makes progress in her mission and steals some letters between Jane and Cassandra. But she‘s caught one day and like the good little spy she is, she reveals practically everything 🤦♀️. 👇 cont.
#Pemberlittens Ch.15: Liam admits to having strong feelings for Rachel, enough that he wants to end his engagement. Does she feel the same or for her is it just lust? It‘s hard to tell even though she is telling the story. Jane falls quite ill and Rachel, despite the danger of being caught as the real doctor, tends to her. Jane and her sister must suspect even more that something is up with their new friends.
#Pemberlittens Ch.14: Oh Rachel and Liam. For shame. You‘re walking a tight rope. Already at risk of being caught for multiple offences, and now you throw romance into the mix! When really you should be concentrating on doing your mission and getting ready to head back home. At least Rachel sort of got a bit closer through her conversation with Jane. Although I do think Jane suspects something is off with her. Tsk tsk I‘m shaking my head.
Just got off the peloton and really need a steamy hot bath. My son just told me he took a shower like 30 minutes ago and he takes notoriously long showers. Like. Allllll the hot water kind of showers. It‘s an anxiety thing, so I don‘t give him grief about it. 🤞🏻 that there‘s enough hot water to make this worth throwing in a Lush bath bomb! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
#Pemberlittens Ch.13: the main thing I couldn‘t stop thinking about is that they lost Qb000! And Rachel still has to pretend to be engaged. Henry‘s fine - he thinks he‘s about to marry a rich heiress. But I feel bad for Liam going along with Rachel‘s plan. It‘s his money too, and it was lost in a matter of days. Here‘s hoping they can actually make it home…being poor in the 1800s was no joke. Even if Rachel finds farming peaceful.
For some reason I cannot pinpoint, I am bailing from this book & #buddyread. It just is not the book for me at this moment in time. I just read one chapter so I cannot judge the merits of the book- #Pemberlittens #JanuaryJane #adjacentread
#Pemberlittens Ch.12: Oh Rachel, now you‘ve gone and done it. You‘ve entered into a secret engagement with Henry(And we all know that those end well) - And you‘re planning to donate a bunch of money to his failing bank. Good plan. Ugh - I just have a feeling this isn‘t going to end well.
#Pemberlittens Ch.11: had issues trying to post yesterday (tags weren‘t working and the post published twice) - here‘s hoping things work better today! So…is it just me or are things just super awkward between Liam and Rachel? I‘m not shipping them at all! Rachel needs to get her head in the game and stop acting juvenile. Okay, that may seem harsh, but there are big things at stake, aren‘t there? I‘m finding it hard to like her. Anyone else?
#Pemberlittens Ch.10: well, that was awkward! Henry proposes…and what an…icky?…proposal. Now Rachel has to decide how long to lead this poor sap on. Although I do think a big part of his interest lies in her money. How could it not? And that conversation with Liam was confusing to say the least. Do they like each other? Is he telling her not to marry or sleep with Henry? I think the two of them need to focus on the task at hand and avoid feelings.

#Pemberlittens Ch.9: Rachel saves Jane‘s niece from choking. Consequently she and Liam are invited to Chawton House and will be able to be close to Jane when she returns home. This is great! Except Rachel starts worrying that they‘ve altered history. She also saved Tom…will the future as they know it be the same? Tricky to think about - as with all time travel stories. Also, Rachel is attracted to Liam, but is being pursued by Henry🤷♀️😵💫🤔
#Pemberlittens Ch.8: This chapter further explores the dynamics between the Austen siblings and their reactions to having Liam and Rachel insert themselves into their lives. Cassandra seems a tough nut to crack. This whole thing seems as though it will be impossible to get close to Jane‘s letters and manuscripts. Also, Rachel is still trying to figure Liam out.
#PemberLittens read this as part of a group read and I really enjoyed this one. It was for me a unique “what if” read and I‘m glad I spent time with these characters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#Pemberlittens Ch.7: confession-I have a morbid fascination with the history of medicine and how horrible some treatments used to be. The fact that Henry, who is using mercury and bloodletting to cure his illness, actually gets better, is so interesting. And Rachel having to ask people to wash their hands - if I time travelled I‘d be such a germaphobe I think. Anyway, in this chapter the main takeaway is they are slowly getting closer to Jane.
#Pemberlittens Ch.6: Rachel fears Jane doesn‘t like her - and she‘s probably right - but that‘s ok because it seems as though Henry does. And Rachel is finding that she is attracted to Henry as well. Liam flirts with Jane - as well as Liam can flirt at least. He‘s probably more capable than Rachel gives him credit for. He got her talking at least.
#Pemberlittens Ch.5 Rachel is feeling stifled at being a woman in such a restrictive time, & especially a doctor. She feels helpless, like her hands are tied. In a surprising turn of events, Liam takes her to see Henry at an inappropriate time of day & when he is sick. surprisingly-instead of turning them away-he brings JANE to meet them! I‘m not quite sure if Rachel passed her test or answered her questions correctly. Still, contact has been made
#Pemberlittens Ch.4: their dinner is a success, but a great cause of stress to everyone. Henry acts a bit odd and then disappears afterwards and politeness (which dictates everything) says they cannot go visit him. They must wait. While they do, they hire more servants and find they now have absolutely no privacy in the home. Is anyone else worried about Jenks and what he might do?
#Pemberlittens Ch.3: Rachel and Liam go to dinner at Henry‘s - and he mentions the possibility of Rachel meeting Jane! That‘s exactly what the goal was so well done. It must be so nerve wracking to have to watch everything you say and watch your accent and mannerisms. 👇
So I actually tried to read this book a few times, back before and around the time it came out, and I just couldn't get into it. Wondering if I give it another go around now with the #pemberlittens, I may have better luck? Let's see!
#Pemberlittens Ch.2: Rachel is having a hard time adapting to being a submissive female I think - she saves a young chimney sweep and Liam questions whether they‘ve altered history. But really, how could anyone stand idly by? Rachel and Liam finally write a letter to Jane‘s brother and secure a meeting for Liam. It goes well and he garners a dinner invite for the two of them at Henry‘s house. One step closer to Jane! 👇Link to article 👇
Def getting the Doctor Who/ Connie Willis vibes from this one, but that's a good thing.
I'm a big fan of the time travel
#Pemberlittens Ch.1 - Very interesting way to start the book - faced by the stark reality that they are not in Kansas anymore - the dangers of Regency England are brought to life and always with reminders that these two do not belong. London sounds horrible! But I hate big city chaos. I would both love and hate this opportunity- as I think Rachel does. 👇
